Guys, I’m a huge fan, and I have a content suggestion that would also solve a problem for me. I made a horrible mistake by buying a bottle of Octomore just prior to the Covid shutdown. It was glorious. I particularly loved how deep and dark the flavors were. Not so much the smoke or peat, though it’s Octomore, so you can’t ignore that, but the dark dried fruit flavors that the smoke is wrapped around which most attracted me. Here then is the problem. It’s not an inexpensive whiskey and with all the uncertainty created by Covid lockdowns, I’m just not in a position to spend Octomore kind of money at the moment. I’d like to be a bit more prudent. I love Laphroaig of course, and while that may come from the same Islay tree as Octomore, it seems to me to be on a very different branch. So I was wondering if you can offer some suggestions that stay true to the flavors to the degree that it can be done, but wander around the price points. A content suggestion what would very much appeal to me (and I hope to others), is one that starts with ‘if you’ve had and loved this relatively expensive and wonderful whiskey, and would like to go down that road in a more carefully budgeted way, here’s stuff to think about.’ Sort of follow the notes up and down the price points. It’s sort of an anti-snobbery way to look at the space, and no one can do that better than you guys. By the way, I’ve tried most of the Port Charlotte line, and while it was lovely, I didn’t find it even on the same road as Octomore. Maybe Octomore is so unique that it’s on a different road entirely than everything else. Maybe I’m just clueless. Fair enough. But I think this would be an interesting and useful bit of content to get from experts like you guys. PS I’ve been in New York City for 30 years now, and you guys remind me of absolutely everything I miss most about Texas.

Personally haven't tried the Octomore yet (definitely on my list, which one did you have?), but from your description it sounds like the Ardbeg Uigeadail might be up your alley. A lot more affordable + amazing fruity flavors hidden behind the smoke.
@Tom-qq5bk
@Tom-qq5bk 3 жыл бұрын
@@qsdfghjklm363 I've had the 10.3 and the 10.4. The 10.4 is the one I flipped over but both are stunning and well worth the money. It's just a bit much to drink all the time. I am down with the Uigeadail as well. I actually am thoroughly enjoying the wee beastie at the moment, though it's not quite the same darkness. But yeah, you seem to be getting the theme, and I just thought it might be a fun way to walk through some of the variations. Thanks for the pointer.

It's usually out of stock within a couple of days of arriving and limited to one bottle per customer per day. It's always available somewhere in Virginia, but when the closest VABC store that has it is 120 miles away, it's easier to just order it from California. My favorite Irish is Teeling Single Malt. VABC just discontinued it so now I have to order it from out-of-state.

The one's on the south side of Chicago: Redbreast 12 - been looking for 2.5 months to find, still can't. $70-80 Wild Turkey 101 - regularly on the shelves. ~$40 Monkey Shoulder - regularly available. $35-45 Laphroaig 10 - hit or miss depending on the store. Some have it regularly, some have it once in a while. $40-50

I have noticed that here in Texas too. Laphroaig 10 is over $60 but Ardbeg 10 is still only $50. My last bottle of Bowmore 12 I bouhgt late last year for $50 and now it costs $68 in the same exact liquor store. After the release of the Wee Beastie ($35), I suspect that Ardbeg is going to start raising their prices along with their Islay competitors very soon. I suspect that by this time next year the 5 year Ardbeg Beastie will cost $50 and the Ardbeg 10 will cost between $60-70. Sadly,.. I will still buy it anyway.

Angel's Envy Rye is a great whiskey that anyone can enjoy especially if you like maple syrup and marshmallowey notes and Caribbean rum aftertaste. Ryes are seriously underrated as well as straight/single malts. Woodford Reserve's straight malt is a great whiskey full of body and richness with a subtle sweetness on the front.

just tried monkey shoulder and redbreast 12 red breast is really spendy here but I gotta say, it's bang-on for on the rocks or with water for me. monkey shoulder is cheaper and, if I had a better tolerance, it'd be my pick for neat whisky. I was super shocked to find 2 whiskeys I liked. I don't hate whisky but I generally shy away from high ABV drinks. this stuff really surprised me that I would have it with water or on the rocks. definitely a change from tullamore dew, johnnie walker red, and jameson. which out of those three only tullamore dew with coca-cola was my go-to. very good stuff!

@@Daniel-zq3wq ahhh, I mean HH makes substantially more complex, available bourbon than BT while being in the same price category. We all have our own taste profiles.... But BT is a sweet simple not readily available bourbon.... Which means it doesn't really qualify for this list.
