Today we take you to Merchants House, 19 Peckover St, Bradford BD1 5BD.
Hidden in plain sight are a few parts of the 𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗞𝗶𝗿𝗸𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 (demolished in 1972) that sit at the entrance of Merchants House.
𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱?
After thorough research we are not 100% sure which side of the market had the cherubs.
You can google entrance images of the market and make your own conclusion to which side you think these cherubs sat.
If you are down Shropshire side you can also visit the IRONBRIDGE GORGE MUSEUMS, where one of the gates that was part of the old Kirkgate Market is residing there.
Their website is www.ironbridge...

• Amazing Architecture I...
I hope the video does justice to these artefacts, as they were awkward to film!

Your videos are always increasing knowledge of Bradford's history. Sadly too many architectural gems have been demolished. I did not know that the carved stones were from Kirkgate Market. Imagine the dedication and hard work of master masons, what would they would be thinking about the destruction of their work.

Totally agree, and phenomenal work put into the design. There doesn't seem to be any substance these days in architecture. It's all about money and quick turnover. Appreciate your comment. Thanks for watching 👀

kirkgate market should still be there like leeds one is. The man how knocked it down is still alive today in his 80s.and he was a famous wrestler back in 60 70s his stage name was Barry cannon and cannon Mills was named after him. When it got opened as a market.

The craftsmanship of the period was amazing absolute shame they demolished the building and replaced with concrete slabs in the 1970’s. The Swan Arcade another historic masterpiece located opposite the Wool Exchange on Market St I believe. It was also demolished. This was a shopping centre like the Victoria Arcade in Leeds City Centre also replaced with a concrete office block.

Also an interesting point, I'm not sure of the scale of the old kirkgate market, but if you take a look above Wilkos near Rawsons Quarter you will see something very similar almost identical to the circular dated stone on top of Wilkos, perhaps the cherubs and this plaque was facing towards Wilkos side? If you take a look above Wilkos you may see what I mean, looks strikingly similar but again I am not quite sure if the Old kirkgate did reach up toward Rawson Quarter and if it even faced opposite to the now Wilkos building

The old bradford Kirkgate was very similar style to Leeds Kirkgate Market which has survived and become a Grade 1 listed Building. I remember doing my Saturday shopping and I used go to Kirkgate market and Rawson market. I think it was a big mistake to demolish the Bradford KirKgate market

Unfortunately there's only one pond left, the others infilled and it is interesting if indeed Kirkgate Market's rubble filled them.
