Off Camera Flash Photography // Concrete Desert Portraits with Godox AD400 Pro

This video shows off camera flash photography techniques as I take portraits outdoors with the Godox AD400 Pro.
The only light we used during the entire session was the Godox AD400 Pro (Xplor 400 Pro) and the 33.4" Godox AD-S85 proprietary softbox. This softbox is designed specifically for the Godox mount on the AD400 Pro, and I packed it because it's so much slimmer when collapsed than any of the bowens mount softbox that I own. I also wanted to try this softbox out more ahead of the release of the Godox AD300 which will feature this mount with no included bowens mount adapter.
We used a few techniques such as using a CTB gel on the flash to create warmer ambient light, as well as using the softbox as a flag to manage shadows.
This session was photographed near a water basin in Las Vegas, NV. Yvens Banatte setup the shoot as a way for us to get off the strip and shoot since most of the week at WPPI you are indoors at the expo.

This is the type of video that there needs to be more of on KZfaq! Not only hearing what was the idea behind an image, but how it was obtained, and what was used is great!

This was excellent because you talked through your thought process and what didn't work for you. So many videos are produced that just show the images that worked well that I think it can be misleading. Ppl think you just go out and magically get perfect shots all the time, everytime. Appreciate you! Oh and your ability to scale walls is impressive too!

I saw the same lines on the flare, on my a7r iv when shooting wide open against the sun. I think it's related to the phase detect auto focus array, but i haven't found a way around it. Fortunately I've only ever seen it under the most extreme conditions (f/1.8 wide open against 11am sun). Great channel. I love the info on flashes and i hope you do more. I've never shot w flash and the information is invaluable for someone like me. Thanks

Rob, @6:10 looks like PDAF Striping from the sensor, not necessarily the ND filter. I have had it show up once or twice. I used an online tool to remove it.

Hey Zachery, there is a softbox lighting me from very slight camera left, and the background is two RGB led panels with their diffusion "softboxes" (their definition, not mine) boomed overhead. One is a Luxli Cello, the other is the Clar Venus which i'm positive is the Luxli Viola rebranded. The boom also has a hair light pointed at me that I only use when I'm wearing a hat otherwise it just reflects off my head.

Robert , first of all thank you for your videos i enjoy it al lott i'm struggeling to buy the right strobe !!i want to buy my first bigger strobe and it needs to be portable and also have the possibility to overpowering the sun in hss do you think that the 400 is enough ore could i better buy the 600 ?? thanks in advance
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 4 жыл бұрын
I use the ad200 to balance subjects in bright outdoor settings all the time. It's a function of distance, modifier selection, modifier size, and HSS/Standard sync more than it is what strobe you use. Check out my video "what Godox flash you need to overpower the sun" to get an idea of what each is capable of.

Hey Robert , it was good seeing you at wppi. I have a question regarding the stc nd filter. You said in the video you are using there clip-on filter. I went to stc website and they say the filter isn't compatible with the a7riv. They show a7riv stc nd filter in development, can you tell meif you had any issues using the a7riii stc filter on your a7riv

Would have gotten more out of this shoot if you didn’t only changed light and locations but also the outfit. What the model is wearing looks quite casual. I would have tried a big dress to create a contrast to these geometric constructions. Or a futuristic outfit which would have also matched the location. I think a lot of photographers are so busy getting the light right and creating a nice bokeh that they forget that all the technology and equipment should serve only to support their idea and create something great.
@robhallphoto
