Off Camera Flash Photography Setups is made to take you through a real world, working photographer's session, Like how I use my Godox AD200 and softbox. I aim to share all information on camera, lens selection, flash details and light modifiers used to help you build an understanding of how to create these images yourself. Each new location, subject, story, and client combine for a unique outcome. I discuss client goals, the creative process of progressively building an image, and the random challenges that occur when shooting on location. I also describe the use case of the images (print, billboard, digital advertising, etc.) and how that affects the work.
In this episode I photograph a student studying in the library. In the first scene I use a 32" Grand Box Pro with a Godox AD200 as the key light. I use another AD200 with the Magmod Magbeam + Magmask to light the books in the background. I follow up with some telephoto portraits using the Sony 135mm F/1.8 GMaster lens down a narrow aisle between bookshelves.

I for one absolutely love the last wide shot! For those that know what it's like to study late hours in a library, this photo captures that feeling. The model looks like she's tired from studying long hours, yet manages to seem composed and has a look of accomplishment on her lovely face, as if saying, "I've got this". I love how it darkens at the end because studying and preparing for an exam can be quite scary. I absolutely love this photo and the entire project as well.

Thank you! I feel the same way. KZfaq tends to show you a) the most glamorous/ambitious paid projects ( like a Liebowitz or Von Wong shoot ), or b) it's unpaid shooting strictly for the purpose of making content, which lacks any of the restrictions of doing paid work. There is this massive void on KZfaq that doesn't show genuine, working people. The weird part is that it's the most common type of work available to photographers. I think a big part of it is that it's simply difficult for most working photographers to capture themselves on the job, and the resources for an external crew don't develop until the shoot has a very high budget.

@Darwinsgift
@Darwinsgift 4 жыл бұрын
@@robhallphoto For the H200R and V1 you need to cut off the base disk on the tube and use tape to secure but you can also use a standard head of any speed light by cutting into the side of the tube near the base and just push it in. The interior of the tube is silver so it acts as a refractor. The plastic cap can also hold colour gels. :)

Hey Rob. I love these videos. The one thing i notice about all your images is that the colors and white balance are absolutely beautiful. I've recently switched from Nikon to Sony A7III and struggle with Sony's colors and skin tones. Can you please spend a couple of minutes in your next video and explain how you set your white balance specially in mixed lighting situations? I am wedding photographer and would love to see your in camera color profile settings and if you do anything specific to set your white balance...like using a grey card or if you use some other method. Thanks for always sharing your knowledge with everyone.
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 4 жыл бұрын
I don't do anything special in camera. I just choose my WB based on flash and gel use (like flash I shoot at 5500k, or 3200k if I have a CTO gel on). One thing that did help me in post, is using the DVLOP 3.0 camera profile in my raw editors as my starting point. I think it's superior to the Adobe standard profile. I am considering attempting to make a Picture Profile to match what my raw file looks like on my calibrated computer to try to get even more accuracy.

Do you ever use LED lights for on location indoor shoots? Like when you lighted up those books in the foreground between the shelves with the AD200 and head, could you have used a kind of LED light instead? Or if you had access to a socket, using a Godox SL60 maybe? Love the video, those real life vids are the best :)

I can't remember if I gelled that back light. It could have a 1/2 CTO gel on it but from looking at the BTS the light seems white so I'm just not positive. But the camera white balance is 5500k, the key light is ungelled and the desk lamp is tungsten incandescent which is why it's so warm.

cant remember if it ea this video or another. but you mentioned you are mostly using your new round head for ad200 instead of mad mod. have you tested the difference of the light output quality and pattern using the round head in a modifier (say like a softlighter) vs using the omni directional bulb? I feel like the omni might give better softer coverage. but love the idea of the round head for the ease of throwing gels on. thoughts?
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 4 жыл бұрын
I have indeed tested both of those things. I have a dedicated video on magmod + fresnel vs. H200R + AK-R1 kit. The short of it is, the H200R produces less output but a significantly better quality of light. The snoot is the only hole in the AK-R1 kit. Regarding H200R vs. Barebulb. Yes I've tested and while the Barebulb is superior (less specularity), the pattern is the same. For me, the benefit of gel speed positively affects my work more than the tiny increase in specularity negatively affects my work. Still use the barebulb if I'm being a stickler, but 90% of the time I'm satisfied with the round head.

This guy definitely has some skill, and experience; but damn, it’s ISO ( I. S. O. ) not ‘iso’... it’s an acronym - not a word!! Also, fresnel - the ‘s’ is NOT silent!!! Frezzznel, not frenel. Drives me nuts.
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment on my skill! As for the other parts - wrong, with passion, twice. ISO : The only relation this has is to the ISO, or International Organizations for Standardization. The discussion of whether or not this org is represented by an acronym has been mischaracterized so frequently that they put a section on their about page to clear it up. It states : "Because 'International Organization for Standardization' would have different acronyms in different languages (IOS in English, OIN in French for Organisation internationale de normalisation), our founders decided to give it the short form ISO. ISO is derived from the Greek 'isos', meaning equal. Whatever the country, whatever the language, we are always ISO." Basically, it's not an acronym, and if you need more proof, here's an employee of ISO, talking about ISO, on ISO's youtube channel. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aa56m8qKtLbKgas.html As for Fresnel, It's named after it's inventor, French engineer Augustin-Jean Fresnel. Being French the pronunciation of his name is "Fruhnel", although plenty say "Fraynel". And if you need more proof of this see: forvo.com/word/augustin-jean_fresnel/ kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r8pdjZuFmdOoY2w.html&ab_channel=EmmaSaying kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pdWfp5Z0uryyknU.html&ab_channel=PronunciationFlashcards And I realize there are plenty of robots on the internet that pronounce it as Freznel, that's obviously the phonetic way, but it's wrong.
