The gifting of excess food seems to be a thing here. Most people are so friendly. Periodically we will get a random knock at kitchen window, finding neighbors, bringing us potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, squash, beets, corn, the odd Galo and such. We've been here 4 years now, and since we were able, we constantly return the favor. 🍁

About your neighbors giving you vegetables and helping you out: I was just thinking earlier how in my life, there have been friends and relatives, in the past, who would be really generous to me and I would accept it and say thank you but I never did anything to honor their generosity and every time it would come to an end never to be done again. So, I think by you wanting to paint him a picture and acknowledging his kindness and generosity is wise. I wish I would have done that now.

Hole digger. That is funny. Bro you need some big pruning sheers for those roots. Just remember when turning around land, every little task complete is a step in every major task. So celebrate everything you accomplish with a glass of wine to a moonlight dance in the evenings. Keep the romance on the farm. You've got a few years of work ahead of you but keep hammering. It's worth every ache in the back.

A suggestion that hopefully will help with the mouse invasion of your van engine compartment. Leave the hood of the compartment open when you're not using the vehicle. Mice, field rats, ground squirrels, etc. don't like sunlight and visibility from predators. Wishing you success with your homestead projects!

Hi guys, just a little help I hope, but the gutter doesn’t leak the way you think, rainwater good’s don’t need glue or sealer, gravity and nature takes its course. Your best bet would be to watch the roof and gutter when it’s actually raining and I’d bet the water is either overshooting the gutter or dropping before it reaches it! Both easy fixes but just a bit more work for you (like you haven’t got enough). Good luck! Great vids, keep at it Andy.

There is a silver lining, you haven't lost crops due to the rain and it gave you to see where you need to dig drainage ditches. Have your friend's gone all ready? With the heavy rain, would it not be worthwhile collecting it. Has the barn got drainpipes and an ibc or other water collection tub. Fro. What i see the Portugeese farmers are a friendly bunch. Who knows, maybe if he is getting on a bit, he sees you like his own kids. That fruit and veg looked really tasty and like nothing from. Suppermarkets. Mmm a nice thick veggie soup or broth on cold wet winter days. Nice idea to gift the farmer something you paint. Although now its s past Christmas, sodid he like what you made. I still think your art is something you can sell in a craft market or on line. Thats a thought do you have an etsy shop? Nice seeing your banter and that you are posting more. X

Gosh, Laura, i was cheering for you to use a longer shovel so you wouldn't have to over stretch your back and strain your knees as much. If you stick with the shorter spade, maybe stand in the ditches (in your wellies, of course) you're digging in order to shorten the distance you must reach for? Clever use of your IBC cover/Slytherin robe, Dan. 😄 Very happy and healthy new year, young ones 💖.

HERE IN THE US WE HAVE VARMITS IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENTS. KEEP THE HOODS PROPPED OPEN. THEY HATE THAT. AT LEAST 12-16 INCHES OPEN. AND THEY SELL A SPRAY OIL FOR REUSABLE AIR FILTERS. I SPRAY A LIGHT FILM ALL OVER THE ENTIRE ENGINE HIGH AND LOW, ANIMALS HATE OIL, AS DO SPIDERS IN STEEL OR WOODEN SHEDS. INSECTS DONT LIKE OIL EITHER. WORKS FANTASTIC AGAINST DEADLY SPIDERS. FOR THE VAN YOU CAN GET WOOD BOARDS, AND USE AS A SOLID BASE TO JACK IT UP. AND PLACE ROCKS UNDER THE TIRES UNTIL THINGS GET MORE SOLID. THEN ITS NOT EXPENSIVE. ITS A FUNNY THING WATER DOES TO VIRGIN SOIL, SO SOFT. I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM HERE ON MY LAND, YOU CAN SEE HOW MUCH GRAVEL I PUT ON MY MAIN DRIVEWAY, SCROLL MY VIDS. I REMEMBER COMING HERE IN JANUARY 2001 AND ALMOST GOT STUCK ON THE DIRT STREET. I KNEW RIGHT THEN I WAS GONNA NEED A LOTTA GRAVEL TO SURVIVE. BE BLESSED... AND A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR... A GOOD LAUGH DAN.

I was going to similarly suggest to Laura and Dan to dig out a gentle slope under the tires, then line with stones and maybe wood/branches from their land clearing to give the tires something to have traction with. And i thought someone's suggestion to have the truck help pull out the van is good, too. But the tires need traction to roll out of the mud.

Im still watching so maybe the mouse problem is solved by now but, we put a bar of stinky soap, under the hood to get rid of ctitters. ( "Irish Spring" to be exact). Sold in the US. It has a very strong scent. It may have menthol or peppermint or both or something else similar in it. Perhaps pine? I'm not sure. Sorry. Perhaps using something/cloth with these essential oils or some other similar product, might help instead?? Good luck!

@The Origin Homestead LES who commented 7 days ago is correct, solvent cement will joint the fittings and pipes = 100% leaktight jointing! Any Plumbers, Builders, DIY outlet in Portugal will stock PVC Solvent cement and bottles of the cleaner (which you need to use before solvent cementing). Check KZfaq for videos how to do it. It works with PVC pipes and fittings (will not work with Polyethylene or Polypropylene pipes/fittings). In France I got a small tube from our local SuperU supermarket - its so common. About 4 euros.
