In this video, I will demonstrate some of the differences between a pure sine wave inverter and a modified sine wave inverter. I talk about the differences, various uses of these two types of off-grid inverters, and when I prefer to use each one.

@@shoestringprepmostly any electrical device that uses low power including medical equipment will simply Clean the voltage up first. If it's medical equipment it definitely has to be able to put up with interruptions to power and maybe less than desirable power conditions from all that equipment being plugged into the hospital as well as any backup generator power that they may need to deal with.

Hi Shoestring, could you please do a video of using an electric blanket on inverter? I bought a sunbeam electric throw at Wally world over the winter and hooked it up to my hf 750 watt modified inverter and it toasted the controller on the electric blankets. I've ordered a pure sine wave 2000 watt inverter to see if it helps? It will be hooked up to three 122ah each deep cycle lead acid batteries...love your videos.

There are one big question and a lot of a lot of rumors out there that make me confused. Will the modified sine wave damage the fan motor in the long run? I read a lot stating that modified sine waves should only be used in non-motor equipment. Yes, a modified sine wave will run a fan motor, but it will damage it in the long run. Is it true?

@@shoestringprep okay I am genuinely curious if the pure sign uses a little less juice for the same load. Ie: more runtime. I guess you would have to compare 2 of the same wattage to be fair...

Theoretical the modifies sine wave is less efficient in a motor. However your test does not prove that at all. Or did you measure for instance the windspeed vs the power draw? The question remains how modified sine wave inverter performs with for instance a switching power supply (like for a laptop).
@shoestringprep
@shoestringprep 2 жыл бұрын
I did not measure the output of the fan, such as wind speed. The laptops do charge slower when on a modified sine wave, and often make a buzzing or humming sound. However, as far as I can tell, the laptop is not harmed by the use of the modified sine wave. Thanks for your comment.

What does a UPS system for computers produce? That should tell you there if electronics can handle the square. I ran a big screen TV and receiver off a lawn and garden battery for 4 hours at least using a 140 watt inverter that plugs into a cigarette lighter. Get em at the auto parts store. Whats that putting out? Mechanical motors do complain but being an X HVAC reject, a short time on one is not extending its life I put it that way. Try a refrigerator or a small window AC from house current then inverter and see.

Pure sine wave is the form electricity takes when it enters your house. A modified sine wave is an inverter's attempt to duplicate the pure sine wave but doesn't get it quite right. Thank you for your comment.

I use a 24 volts Aims 2000 watts inverter / charger...it is a pure sine and works great ; the only thing is the idling current is 26 watts, so sometimes if I just have a small load I use the 410 watt modified sine inverter...in two weeks I will get two more batteries...that will be 16 lol...every time I add two more it acts differently...in a couple months I will have a hard decision to make ; whether to get two more or not...the 14 that I have now are at 24.2 volts this morning...it's getting to be later before they start charging now , around 7 AM...

You did not demonstrate the differences between a PSW and a MSW inverter. For that, you'd need an oscilloscope. You did not measure efficiency in any way, shape or form. For that you'd need a simple Kill-A-Watt meter, at the very least. You demonstrated how one type of load runs off of those types of inverters, and you picked a load that is least likely to be damaged by using a MSW inverter. The bottom line is very simple: You use a PSW inverter unless you simply cannot afford one. If that is the case, you should think long and hard about how you go about charging and powering sensitive electronic devices...or you'll be replacing those expensive devices because you were too cheap to buy a good inverter. That is a classic case of being penny wise and pound foolish. At the very least you could have shown how going from the MSW to a power conditioner and then to the fan eliminates the noise caused by the motor not getting a steady, 60 hertz cycle from the inverter. Ask anyone who has worked in professional audio production about power conditioning to eliminate hum and you'll quickly understand how a cheap, $100 conditioner can protect your very expensive audio equipment from "dirty" power sources...like a MSW inverter.
