Off Grid Log Cabin - Leatherbound Door and The Hole in the Floor?!

My Self Reliance

6 жыл бұрын

NOTICE: TURN YOUR SOUND WAY UP! Sorry, my mic failed on me so my audio is excruciatingly low. My Self Reflections was unusable so I'll film another segment later in the week.
Continuing with the log cabin construction, I cover the inside of the door in leather using a similar technique that I used on the carved footstool that you see in the cabin.
I also finish the icebox in the floor so that I can start storing food below ground, hopefully preserving it for much longer than it would in the hot (or freezing) cabin. Homesteading off grid means I need to come up with more ways to harvest, cook and preserve food for long term storage, probably my greatest challenge in this long term wilderness homesteading experiment.
With the freezing winter temperatures we have been getting this winter, I am burning a lot of wood and I am spending a lot of time gathering it, cutting, splitting, buying, etc. Bringing it from the road to the cabin is mostly uphill and it takes a lot of time.
One thing about the cold is that it doesn't usually snow as much as it does when it's warm and snow squalls come off of Georgian Bay. I have to shovel some snow, but not much and I haven't needed to shovel off the roof yet.
There's a pesky red squirrel trying to get into the cabin and I shoo him away from the logs on the front of the cabin, but he simply jumped down and hid in my stack of firewood.
Living offgrid is challenging and hard work, but there is no schedule so I am able to work at my own pace and do some relaxing around the fire with a good book.
Cali, our golden retriever, wanders around in the first part of the video, but I'm alone for the final couple of days as my wife is off with the dog.

A canoe is how I met my wife. Her dad had it for sale in the front yard and she was who answered the door. Then it kinda went from there. My wedding gift from her was a pair of custom wood paddles which then we hand painted our first winter together . Just thought I'd share that. Love the door and ice box looks great

In my opinion Shawn James is the forerunner in cabin building on youtube in the "modern world". Now some of his friends are trying to duplicate but it's not the same. Shawn's success is that his got a story beside him. a life goal and good lessons if you want to live off grid. I am looking forward for more videos as I was when I was watching GOT.

daft nord, I keep a journal of the build of each project, measurements, notes and comments how to improve the next time, also including a sample of each material used, or my test board for stains and of course hardcopy photos of the finished product. I keep such a journal even for the projects I give as gifts. When looking through my journal, not only do I get to revisit the item, but I get to revisit the build. xoxo from sunny Arizona. 70/47f today. 🌞

I couldn't agree more... Just as well technology doesn't allow us to also smell the food... That time you ate the bear steak was really interesting. I'd have loved to be able to taste one but we don't have bears here in South Africa, unless I go shoot one in the zoo, but I somehow get the feeling that I'd suddenly become extremely unpopular after that.. ;-)

kinda found this Chanel by mistake.. i have been watching backwards you might say , bt im started from the beginning now, and I keep coming back and enjoying the progress you have made mister, i know your not a professional wood worker as i am. But you have learned by doing it alone ! very awesome, It`s because of this and your insightful views and comments about the reality's of the modern ways of life and of whats lacking in today`s society that i applaud you sir.. your in a lucky not lucky but earned position to be able to not only to see your own visions but have the time to achieve, your own goals, set and realized through hard work and perseverance... everything you need all made with your own hand, a rear thing in these days and very inspiring and you should be proud of your accomplishment as we are thank you Shawn for sharing your experience with us....

Enjoyed seeing your Cast Iron Pans the most, I save bacon grease and rub my pans inside and out with it after the grease is cooled and solidified - then I turn my oven to 225 and let them sit in there all day. I do that every 2-3 months! Works pretty good. Great job on the cellar door. Hope you have a good day

The volume was lower than normal but still workable. I like to say (Viewers), we all are masters at something and jacks of many trades. We all can benefit from one another. The wealth of knowledge between all of us is limitless. We should assume; with respect, others may or may not know what somebody else knows. There are as many ways of doing something as there are viewers of KZfaq videos. My point is for everyone to share what they know and not assume one way is the best way. We all stand to benefit from one another. You never know how you may help or change a life for the better. Eat, sleep, and work well.

The interior of the cabin is shaping up nicely! Lookin' amazing... as is the exterior. How many more touches are there? I suppose tile or stone behind the stove, and the exterior kitchen/grill you've mentioned, and then...and then...I know there is always the next thing, but, it must be so satisfying to see it all shaping up. I am happy for you, and happy to watch it all unfold! I've been digging these videos since I found them. Just recently went back to watch parts of the "first" cabin build. I really appreciate the dedication and passion it's taken you to get to where you are currently. Not to mention the resolve and thought required to capture the requisite footage to tell the story visually. Well done again! In the older videos, you mentioned the notion of a bushcraft/building/survival school. Wondering if this is still in the works, or maybe never got off the ground. I think you'd do well in this arena. I would sign up...Just sayin... Re: bloodpressure/diet. You are accountable to nobody but yourself, but I could see how several thousand people would be good encouragement to support changes. It was brave of you to share with so many peoples, and I'm glad you've seemed to have a positive response to a multitude of comments/suggestions. It occurred to me that you're already on top of it, based on your previous video, and it's cool and inspiring to see you taking the steps that you deem necessary, regardless of what anyone else says. Perhaps the family genes overpower the good life (and diet) you live/enjoy, but... This comment was supposed to be brief, and now I've written four paragraphs. I will take this as a sign of good, inspirational, thoughtful, and RESPONSIVE content. You rock!

you have an oven right in front of you... the cast iron pan and the cast iron deep pot over top! instant camp oven also burn a eap of salt in your pans to make them non stick get them super hot and the will smoke like crazy and then only wipe them clean NO SCRUBBING!

that's close to what I do. I save bacon grease, and to restore/re-season a cast iron pan I put in the bacon grease and a lot of kosher salt. the salt keeps the grease from popping, I let it go a bit, and then cut the heat and walk away. come back and use a cloth towel to wipe out the salt to unveil a nice seasoned cast iron pan...

I got rid of my cast iron pans! The iron cookware releases small doses iron ! Which overtime could do damage to our organs and the blood causing health problems!!!!! I always thought cast iron was okay! And much safer than aluminum cookware I switched back to stainless steel cookware basically everything I own is stainless steel Please do research on cast iron cookware !! Before investing ! They' re also pricey

@@leighm4912 yah! and anyOne who owns a cast iron skillet can easily destroy the nonstick with water ! And then having to start over from scratch re seasoning it. ! I know I've done this mistake with washing my skillets with water!!! If I forget to oil it down! It rusts!!!!!yuck I no longer keep cast iron cookware! The reports that I read regarding ccooking with cast iron are NOT good! One needs to be VERY careful how much iron they consume It's best to own a variety of cookware and stoneware as well!!

Another premium video! My guess is that you're going to carve a bear or a wolf into the door?! Which will be AMAZING to watch! I'd get your BP checked by something other than a store machine.. never know the motivations behind those things. I agree you do way to active of a lifestyle and diet to have any significant hypertension. Have a great week!
