I've been looking for comparisons on the Tucson's new 4wd system and you didn't even try the 4x4 lock feature when you got stuck! Wow, please for future try some of the different modes when you do off-road testing especially when you get stuck and most especially when anything is lock capable.

I had hoped he would have used the "lock" feature others have mentioned. I imagine it would have been a different outcome on that first hill. My wife loves the room of the front passenger seat so I don't understand what she's not happy about. I have the exact same vehicle and regarding one posters comment about the head restraints, they also adjust forward and back as well as up and down. Re-read your owners manual.

I hope you know that a Tucson can handle all four wheels on ice and get off of it well. Soft mud won't be an issue. IF ONLY YOU ENGAGED THE DAMN AWD LOCK.

Hey Dave, At 17:45 I think Melissa nailed it describing the jumpy transmission that has also been commented on by other reviewers. On the sandy bit earlier would have liked to see you use the 4WD Lock feature. Otherwise thanks again for the review.

it's jumpy because it has a dual clutch that tries to guess your next gear. if you are a sporadic driver and go back and forth between the gas and brake a lot, the transmission will have a harder time guessing and sometimes pick the wrong gear, and then have to quickly adjust.

This is all completely incorrect. KIA just surpassed Honda in reliability and Hyundai is very reliable as well. I'd do some research rather than spout off useless opinions. Toyota is more reliable than Hyundai, KIA, or Honda. But all of these brands are reliable.

I'm just saying from my experience & my family/friend's experiences; our korean cars broke down faster. In my country kia cars usually go back to the shop for fixing, idk how it is in yours. It's NOT useless to give your personal opinion. isnt this video a review based on his personal opinion :P

Did you get scared for the transmission overheating and that's why didn't push it? I got to tell you this year in the blizzard here in VA with the awd lock I got out of places where a highlander got stuck. It was Snow not off-road but was wondering.

You probably had a double clutch transmission overheat warning while climbing. Normal... And tyres are conti sport contact 5, which are so good in all asphalt conditions in summer, autumn and spring. However, that much bad in soft sand, grass and mud. Still Tucsons are good and safe budget cars...

I’m guessing that the beeping when he was pushing to get up the sand topped hill at the start was the transmission overheat warning. The dual clutch systems are known for it. Confirmed to some extent by the ‘break’ that was taken after that attempt.

When you are on a hill and you cant take off turn off traction control so tires can spin and the DCT wont overheat

I currently own a '13 KIA Sportage and it is a beast off-road. I take it on jeep trails all the time. I'm hoping the new Sportage/Tucson haven't lost off-road ability that drew me to their previous generations. Dave, I often have to lock mine in AWD to get best traction, would that have helped? I have yet to get stuck, or have to back down a hill in mine with it locked.

+Jordan Jolley I honestly don't know why he didn't lock the AWD. I switched my 2013 Tucson for a 2016 Tucson Limited and I can assure you that the off-road capabilities are pretty much the same as the 2013 (if not slightly better).

So did it struggle off road in say comparison to the CX5? Sounded like a transmission temp warning on the first climb attempt. Off roading seemed restrained in your review, no gauntlet or showing center diff lock etc.

Nice review. It would be better if adding one camera to record the read wheel and showing both front and rear wheels while 4WD works.

Melissa's logic about knob vs. button on the center stack is flawed in my opinion. Whether you use the knob or buttons on the center stack, your eyes are on the screen anyway. When using buttons near to knob, they only have a few that you will be able to locate/press by feel after a bit of use.

It seems to me the ESC was off on the first climb in the soft sand. WHY?! Hyundais have lovely traction control algorithms for offroading - allows more wheel slip and applies the brakes more aggressively than most other makers.

I cross my legs on the driver side with cruise control on on long trips . . . stop judging us! And her perspective on the jumpy start is the DCT . . . some find it a little disconcerting as it acts more like a manual than an auto.

when she mentions "jumpy", that's because of the hesitation on 1st year. she is not crazy. the stiff ride comes from the low profile tire. the car can do better off-roading with off-road tires, not all-weather tires. but the review is from bone stock, can't complain. I didn't know what to do with mine. now I do.

I bought one a few months ago. It's an awesome suv in so many ways. One complaint. The headrests poke the back of your head. Otherwise best car in its class in my opinion.

Dave, it seems that the Hyundai Tucson was a big disappointment offroad wise! Any suggestions besides the ugly Toyota Rav 4, Honda CR-V or Mazda MX-3? Still like the Fiat 500X look-wise but.....Fiat dependability?

Hyundai is notorious for having awful passenger seats. I've owned almost all newer models, from the Elantra to the Santa Fe and they all have uncomfortable passenger seats. I now test out the passenger seat when checking out a newer vehicle.

Dave did you engage 50/50 lock? I think at the start of the vid you said that you didn't. Would that have made offroad driving a little better #moregrip

I was yelling also! So frustrating and nobody on KZfaq has a comparison yet with this new 4x4 lock option. I guess it will not be like a real 4x4 but hopefully better than most AWD systems in soft sand and snow.

50/50 lock is true 4x4 but without locking diffs on the axles. With the lock engaged it locks the center diff and divides the engine power 50/50 power to both front and rear axles at all times. Many Land Rovers use this and are very capable 4x4's with the center diff only locked. If you're driving extreme trails and going over large rocks that articulate the vehicle to have tires off the ground then having front and rear lockers is a must also. I bet this Tucson would have mage it up that soft sand hill no problems with the lock engaged. It should be noted that the Tucson will only travel up to 25mph with the lock engaged.

She feels it being jumpy,like an automatic,because of the dual clutch transmission. That is what it's supposed to feel. A lot smoother with the regular 6 speed auto.

good review. what I don't like is that dual clutch and those gauges. why every car manufacturer have so simple gauges? nothing cool. also why have it a speedo all the way to 160mph? like I'll ever go that fast, I never go past 80, so hard to see the speed and the needle hardly moves.

Just a video of driving around in dirt, not really "off-road" just off paved road. Did not see if you made it up the first hill, should have tried the AWD Lock feature at that time. Plus, use the "hill" descent" coming down the first hill. Disappointed.😒

it's no Subaru with those wheels and low profile tire all the AWD is compensating is poor traction on FWD

It wasn't sand, it was the car that failed. Hyundai's AWD system is rubbish, both front and rear diffs are open which means one wheel withoput traction and you're not going anywhere. Technically it's a standard in this class but Tucson misses one more thing - good traction control that can brake the spinning wheel. That's why it failed.

Mostly all AWD systems are a joke compared to real 4 wheel drive. But it would have been nice to see if the 50/50 4x4 lock feature would be a bridge between the cruddy AWD systems in most vehicles and true locking diff 4x4s, but he did not engage it during the testing! FAIL.

Actually, what's rubbish is Hyundai's stock tires. From the video, it appeared that it had the stock Hankooks. If so, it would suck in that terrain. I'd like to see the same attempts with better tires.

After watching so many videos of the Tuscson who looks amazing, and the KIA who is Fugly, i can say that if you live in a place with snow/ice or rugged roads they are bad cars. their AWD is terrible with many flaws, nothing can beat the reliability of a Japanese or the power of a German.

CUV's are not intended to be driven off road. If anyone wants to do that, they will buy a time-tested vehicle for that purpose. Taking a sedan off road is about what you are accomplishing with all of these tests. Nothing makes that any clearer than your passenger.
