Other sources state the payload as 1676-1984 pounds. 825kg in right in the middle of these values. It almost seems like an error when changing units around. The Honda Element back in the day had a similarly useless payload rating that I always questioned as a unit conversion error.

The problems I've had, like others have been related to the pivi pro, but the push updates keep fixing things, which you don't get from many other manufacturers. Enjoy it, its amazing off road!

Will likely get one eventually. I want a competent off road vehicle that can tow a 5000 pound Airstream. The Wrangler and the Bronco can’t do that. Yes, the Gladiator can, but the wife doesn’t want a pickup. Everything is a compromise and this Defender minimizes those factors for us.
@johnbillings2283
@johnbillings2283 3 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend it. I was in the same situation - needed hauling but wanted off road capability, but whenever going somewhere the wife wanted a comfortable ride, not the off road rig. I got a disco 5 and it's perfect. I expect the defender will be comparable or even better (maybe less room in the third row, but a little better off road)

Alpine windows not safari windows. I’d love to know what spec Defender you got because they have up to 900kg payload in some specifications. Something isn’t right. My Discovery Sport has a 620kg payload. Yea well you are supposed to only use the full off road height in the suspension to clear obstacles otherwise it should be set lower.

The North American models come prewired for a trailer brake controller. You can buy whatever trailer brake controller you want and use a standard Ford wiring harness. It’s plug and play. Takes five minutes to install. Works well. This is true for all North American land rovers that come with hitch from the factory. They’ve been doing it for decades.not sure about other countries around the world but I’m guessing they have it as well.

In the UK we don't use brake controllers we just stick a thin cable around the towbar and the trailer does the rest. That'll probably be why there isn't an option for a brake controller.

I have to admit that as an LR4/Discovery 4 owner who offroads with it, all these reviews with people amazed at how good the new Defender is offroad make me smile. Folks, it’s an updated LR4/Disco 4. It’s what the current Disco 5 should have been. This means is going to be a great allrounder. It’s no longer a one trick pony- a utilitarian, dedicated offroad working truck. It’s now a modern vehicle meant to do it all- tow, carry stuff (not sure about that payload figure as everywhere else it is much higher), be very comfortable and capable onroad where, for even those that go offroad with it a lot, it’s going to spend the majority of its time, and still be very capable for the vast majority of offroading that people do. A vehicle like this fits what most people need their vehicle to do way better than something specifically geared toward offroading that has major compromises elsewhere as a result. Now the price may be a bit high, but I’ve equipped one well but not over the top with all the offroad essentials but none of the frivolous crap- like those stupid stickers or plastic hood panels- and it’s mid $60s US. Go price a Gladiator, or a Raptor, or a Rebel or a Sierra AT4 etc.- they’re all not far off similarly equipped. Sure a FourRunner can be had cheaper, but it’s a different vehicle. The Defender is for people who want a nicer vehicle than a FourRunner and have the money and are willing to pay for it. I do wish JLR also made something like what the Grenadier is going to be so that there was that option. But hey, the Grenadier is coming (well hopefully).

This is the suv of the year for a reason. It is an excently engineered vehicle. It can handle most off road situations straight out of the box, and drives wonderfully on road. It is too soon to comment about reliability issues, but if it has any, a reputable independent shop can solve those issues. I know because my father founded Modern Classics, an independent shop that specialized in European vehicles, and we serviced all the top end brands without much if any additional cost to lower end vehicles like Chevy or Toyota.

You realise your model doesn't have the optional E-diff lock right? With that option ticked, better offroad tires, 291mm or almost 12 inches of clearance (straight down the middle! with 2 settings higher still possible), it's actually impressively capable offroad. And yet it's quicker than a Golf GTI from 0 to 60

In Australia the payload or GVM fully loaded is 3,165 kg when the weight of the Defender is removed that is about 2,400kg leaving 765kg payload that will include the trailer ball weight. The towing maximum is 3.5 tons and the train weight of both Defender and trailer is 6,665 kg. Therefore 375kg seems very low for this Defender as 4 people at 100kg would put it over weight. That payload sticker seems wrong! I could see 825kg or perhaps they meant to put 875kg which is about 1800lbs to 1975lbs which fits what I’ve seen on Land Rover’s website of between about 1,600lbs for a fully loaded larger engine to close to 2,000lbs for the smaller engine with minimal options. Regardless of the payload number, thanks for showing what the door sticker actually states! Most reviewers don’t do that and it’s lame. Most people who use trucks need to know those things. Another suggestion would be to take a tape measure and actually measure out the rear cargo area length, width, depth since most manufactures don’t seem to post those anywhere except for the volume which is useless. My Subaru Outback has almost the same cargo volume as this Defender, but the boxiness of the Defender results in much more actual useable space.

For me, this is not an option. My wife and I started shopping for a new car in the spring. After renting and driving quite a few "SUVs" we landed on the 4 runner. We considered quite a bit. Longevity, cost of maintenance, overall build quality. We didn't want a cross over, but we drove many of them to see if they passed the sniff test. For us, it came down to Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Grand Cherokee, 4 runner. The Defender was considered, but the price, cost of ownership, and overall reliability...the tech I talked to said they would work all the bugs out. Yeah, no. I don't want to spend 70k on a car to have it in the shop. I am not spending 70k on a car that has a higher chance of being a pile of crap than others we looked at

@@SaltyDog69 we had a wrangler Rubicon (4 doors, not sure what the Jeepers call them). It was a beast when we took it down a few trails (it was a rental, so the trails were not too difficult). The on-road performance and noise left a lot to be desired. We rented an SR5 4 runner. Again, a beast off off road but the on road performance was great. Comfortable ride had enough "tech" to keep my wife happy, but not too much (the Grand Cherokee has a ton of tech stuff I didn't care for). We ended up with a TRD Off-road package. We could not be happier. Got it for a screaming deal.

I hope you don’t have the diesel 4 runner. Over here (Australia) there is a class action against Toyota for their 4cyl Diesel engine issues. This engine is in our Hiluxes, Prados and Fortunas. I know they are rubbish because I had the misfortune of owning a new one - albeit only for 6 months before getting rid of it. Toyota has really dropped the ball lately on the quality control and reliability.

Is a brand new model going to be as reliable as say a Corolla? (or at least the popular perception of a Corolla given my wife had one that was a total POS)? Probably not. Is it going to explode 30 yards outside the dealership as all the guys who had a friend who had a brother who's nephew's aunt once had one would have you believe? No. I don't have a new Defender as it doesn't suit my needs, though friends do have them. I do have 4 other Land Rovers though. If you're the sort of person that takes their car to a dealership to rotate the tires and change the oil it's probably not for you. But don't believe all the stereotyping you read on the interwebs based on 4th-hand reviews of a 30 year older model.

There's always a higher chance of issues with early production. People need to stop talking about the TFL vehicle and the problems they have had. One vehicle out of thousands sold, and they are milking it for all the views they can get. Click bait language like "broke down". An amber warning light is not a break down. This vehicle has been scrutinized so extensively and one youtube channel that had a problem that they have overblown is all people talk about.
