You should have started Mike with the shrimp. At least that was cooked. Or given him a roll with no fish in it, or inarizushi. Or gotten him drunk first. How about a wasabi challenge? That would be fun.

I was eating sushi when I was 4. My father was a US Marine and was stationed in Japan for a year. So when he got back to the states he would take us to the Japanese restaurants all the time.

I think it is easier to learn to like something at 4 , than it is at 54 (Sorry Mike, if I am off on your age. It just pairs up well, 4-54, no offense intended). Dave said he is 37 (although I thought he was much younger, 27-30), and Mike worked with Dave's mother, so I would assume you have to be about 20+ years older for that math to work out (but I really can't tell).

@@MM-jc7uv : I like it now (I often eat it). But the first few times I tried it, I couldn't get over the idea that it was raw, uncooked meat. (My brain would not turn off "this is raw, it will make you sick.") Just a very ingrained concept/cultural norm that I had to work to get past. The same for raw eggs. (My brain would say "raw eggs = salmonella / dangerous"), but Japanese people often take rice, make a hole in the center, and mix in a raw egg ( tamago gohan / tamago kake gohan): took me a while to believe it wouldn't make me ill. www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2016/04/tamago-kake-gohan-egg-rice-tkg-recipe-breakfast.html#:~:text=Tamago%20gohan%20(literally%20%22egg%20rice,brand%20of%20pure%20powdered%20MSG. i can certainly understand how Mike probably feels. Fun fact Salmon wasn’t traditionally eaten in Japan. In 1986 Norway’s manager of fisheries started a program aimed at exporting fish, especially salmon, to Japan. To this aim they did numerous taste tests in Japan aimed at making it a mainstream product, especially in their sushi industry. Lo and behold: Salmon as a mainstay in sushi.

Sushi is wonderful lol. My favorite is Unagi, aka Eel. It's delicious and almost always served with eel sauce, which is similar to teriyaki. Rolls are good too, fried, baked, maki, etc. They are all good. A place here in town has one called "pineapple express roll" xD, it is Eel, Cream Cheese, spicy tuna, avocado, jalapeños, and its deep fried, topped with spicy mayo and eel sauce. It's orgasmic

There's a lot of people who won't eat sushi because of the texture if they haven't eaten it earlier in life. Personally I love sushi, but I prefer rolls.

Poor Mike. I think he just psyched himself out of it too much (a lot of eyes & a lot of pressure). I eat sushi all the time now, but the very first time I tried it, it made me gag too (I couldn't stop thinking "but it's RAW, it's going to make me sick", although it is very healthy). Sushi caviar = Tobiko (red-orange in color, from flying fish), Masago (which is what it looks like y'all have, from capelin/smelt), or Ikura (the bigger ones from Salmon).

I’m very surprised that in a country that prides itself on fish (cod) and chips and has tons of fishermen bringing in other fresh seafood daily (it is a large island after all), someone dosnt like fish. I have to say that 99% of someone “not liking” sushi is an odd mental thing that’s predicated on assuming “it’s all just raw fish” when most non sashimi style sushi is cooked, cured, pickled, or whatever.

I couldn't see what Daz was offering Mike for the very last one. I REALLY thought Daz was going to have Mike finish with eating WASABI. (The first time I ever ate sushi, I didn't know what anything was, and I thought the 'wasabi' was some kind of 'mashed potatoes' with green food-colouring [or the like]. Because everything was difficult to eat, I just swallowed the ball whole. THAT was a wake-up call.)
