Dr. Guy, I just saw your video whilst browsing on KZfaq. I can't tell you how insightful this has been, this is my third one for this evening. You certainly have cleared up a lot of grey areas for me and I am so energized to put into practice some of the simple tools you recommended. I don't have any questions right now but I'm gonna start on my literature matrix tonight and really get serious about blocking time for writing. I have suffered from the approach of writing in Word with a journal close by me and with life distractions not being able to revisit what I started for another 2 weeks and feeling totally hopeless "again". Learning to Learn by Coursera is also a useful tool that reinforces the importance of repetition and also proves useful tools for helping persons like myself who are struggling to finish. Thanks for your energy and your passion in helping others. Sophia

+Sophia Davis Hi Sophia, in a life where losing is an option -- not winning becomes the easiest option. My recommendation is to daily recognize that, without finishing this, you will not find the life you truly want. It's painful, but it works. Here to help.

Thanks so much for these videos! You clearly think very successive/procedurally which for a simultaneous/relational thinker makes writing the dissertation a whole lot less complex and structured!

Dr. Guy, thank you so much for your tutorials! Your work is helping me a lot but I have a question. Is it possible for you to suggest a headings and sub-headings of literature review on topic "Marine Litter in the Coastal Environment of Lesvos Island, Greece, after refugee crisis - Sources, Consequences and Prevention Measures"? Thank you a lot. Tanja

Dr. Guy... first and foremost I thank you for your very helpful videos. It has made writing things a great deal easier, however, here is my small problem... I am not writing a dissertation as you discuss but doing a research concept paper for my masters capstone. while this may be true my instructor is having us look at this paper as a dissertation we'd write later on in our academics and this has got me scared beyond scared and even confused to a large degree. I've already been gathering information etc and have begun gathering the key aspects, quotes and other relevant information (theories etc) and trying to put it all together to make the literature review. the way you talk it takes a long time which I know is for the higher level of education but what happens if you only have one week to write it up? while the information was gathered from the first week (we're in week 3 right now) we have to submit the full lit review not a draft at the end of one week so your techniques while helpful are also adding to my already stressed nature. I'm wondering really if I have done this the correct way .. my instructor is wonderful in giving advice but she refers us a great deal to your videos for information. I'd like to talk to you more about this and get your thoughts on how best to proceed before I truly lose my mind on this.... how can I get in touch with you please?

+Lori Buchanan-Putnam Hi Lori! Take a look later today for Office Hours with Dr. Guy episode 12 where I answer this question from a dissertation perspective. However, for a Master's perspective, I recommend spending the next 3 days gathering about 25-50 quotes per day. Then, spend the second 2 days organizing the quotes. Then, spend the last 2 days writing up what you have organized. Hope that helps. Dr. Guy

Thank you for the video!! Can you provide a sample Excel spreadsheet of a literature matrix with these quotes? And how does one find this cheap office space you speak of?

+Christine Marie Hi Christine! If you to to my website, which you can find in the video description ( theDissertationMentor.com ), you'll be able to get a copy of the excel. Regarding the cheap office space, I recommend going to google and typing "executive suites" plus your city name. Thanks for your comment! Send me a question any time!

Chapter Two is nearly killing me. I get bogged down looking for references. Should I just write and plug in the references later? I think that the references are slowing me down. I have a good topic, it's current and relevant. Help me out here.

Hi J.B. Good question. My answer: Keep plugging way at the reading, annotation, and note-collection until you feel that you have everything you need to write the chapter. If you jump into the chapter writing, you'll be more confused than ever. If you sit down and know that your ONLY job today is to read one article and highlight materials that seem important, that's a pretty simple task. However, If I asked you to write a page of your lit review, that is a far more complex task.

Hi, and thank you for the reply! I had all of my references gathered already, and I finished my final draft of Chapter Two last week. Your encouragement is valued. And I should have a Doctorate by the end of the year. I have found valuable tips in your videos. It's nice to reply portions of the videos from time to time. Sort of like taking a study break to listen to good advice. Good job. That said, I FINISHED Chapter Two!!!

When I finished my literature review and sent it to another teacher to review it before my supervisor did he told me " my impression is that you are beating around the bush" so I got disappointed and I gave up.What shall I do Dr Guy?How can I carry on conducting my research?
@missfavoured

How did you conduct it? You can merely “beat around the bush” when it does not relate to your research topic and the aim of your dissertation.
