Noon on May 12, 2023. Windward side of Oahu. 55ft deep, less than 2 miles from shore.
(Thank you for Liking and Subscribing!)
Heard a "whooshing" sound, looked up and saw a wide brown thing on the side of the kayak. Thought it was a turtle at first. Happened so fast. Didn't realize I took my left foot out of the water to brace myself from impact and actually pushed the shark's head off with it. If you asked me to do that again, even without the shark, I don't think I'd have that flexiblity. I actually only thought the shark rammed the kayak until I saw the video at home.

Might not have been the wisest move but my partner and I stayed in the area for another 30 mins until we saw a mortally wounded seal. This video shows the fish I had landed before the shark "attacked", the seal I spotted after, and what we did after seeing it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bMybfaelutSpe3k.html

Reminds me of a tragic story from Maui 20-something years ago. A newlywed couple were out on a kayak and went out too far. Couldn't fight the current back in and spent the night between Maui, Lanaii and Kahoolawe. They got cold and made the mistake of getting in the water because it was warmer. Tiger bit the woman in half and her husband scrambled back onto the kayak. The next morning the current helped him make it to Kahoolawe and he called for help. A few years after that I was staying in Kaanapali and was getting ready to head into Lahaina to go on a dive trip. That morning a Tiger bit a surfer's leg off a few miles north and he bled out. They don't like to publicize the danger in Hawaii obviously but I would never go in the ocean in the morning or evenings (unless scuba diving). Tigers may not be as big as Whites but they are pretty indiscriminate with what they chomp on. Don't want to be floating around on the surface when it's their dinner or breakfast time..

We’re going to Maui this October, staying right off kaanapali beach, last two times went to Oahu and Big island. I never venture far out into the water, waist height at most when swimming (although went snorkeling last time also in slightly deeper) I saw the bone chilling video of the poor guy who was attacked and eaten by a tiger shark only 30 yds off shore in Egypt red sea. Still shaken from the footage, absolutely will not be snorkeling, and if I can now even get in the water in Maui it won’t be beyond knee height to be honest. Read that Maui is the worst for tiger shark attacks of all the Hawaiian islands. Scary to think that in researching incidents I didn’t even come across the ones you mentioned (so how many more must there have been that aren’t disclosed…) Do you know of any tiger shark incidents happening there in very shallow waters? (< 20 yds from shore,
@thevikingnomad88
@thevikingnomad88 Жыл бұрын
@@denisinchains I used to stay at Kaanapali a few weeks every year. You should still snorkel at Black Rock (I always felt safest mid day around others). Morning and evening tend to be meal time, especially in murky water where a tributary feeds into the ocean. There was an early am swimmer killed in Kaanapali a long time ago that I remember but she was pretty far out. At the end of the day it is still a very rare likelihood and shouldn't let it ruin your trip. Maui is one of my favorite places in the world.

Wow amazing how close you were too dying an experience very few will ever experience. There was a guy awhile back who got rammed out Maunalua Bay with such force that he was thrown upwards out of his kayak. It made a hole in the bottom of his kayak. Luckily he had an electric sump pump allowing him to make it back to shore.

This is truly horrifying! I'm really glad the kayak didn't turn over, as so many seem to do just by overbalancing! Amazing video. Happy to know you survived this! When going into the ocean, please be extra careful. Attacks can happen at any time of day, and are getting closer to the beach, even in very shallow waters. However, these predators are an important part of the balance of life, so ask the locals about the dangers before you enter ANY waters of the world. Even rivers can be dangerous. Be safe out there!

Usually I'm just fine in the water down here in the Keys, mostly I'm on the Bayside. But this past week there's been a few reports of Tiger Sharks getting real brave around fishing boats. I remembered this video, and thought of those reports and decided I'd stay on the boat and off the kayak this weekend. 😂 Can't belive you kept that foot, I never dangle when fishing lmao!

There's been a sharp uptick in tiger shark sightings in the shallows of Hawaii during Sharktober, November and December, when the female tigers come close ot shore to pup. Lot of beach closures because of the sightings. And yes, I'm trying to keep my feet in the yak.

I can't believe people swim in open water. That shark would of devoured any swimmer in seconds. And people that say sharks only attack because of mistaken identity because they think you are a seal or something. Well Im not buying that. Makes you wonder about people that swim in open water and go missing and are presumed to have "drowned". Most of them were probably eaten by monsters like this. Great video!
@oolala53

Except that probably tens of thousands of people go swimming in the open ocean in a years time and these attacks are always treated like they’re such a big deal. You have a lot more chance of dying of heart disease or cancer, which kill over 1 million people a year in the United States. Too much food, and too crappy of food is much more dangerous than a shark. 🦈😜

I'd say a lot of attacks are mistaken identity or an experimental bite, but I'm still not going swimming in open water where they're around. It might not necessarily want to eat you, but if it tries there's not much you can do about it lol.

I read up on this more so this was a case of mistaken identity. He mentioned in the article that there was a wounded monk seal nearby and the shark may have mistaken him and initiated an attack. It didn't come around again because it realized it wasn't what it wanted, but like all shark attacks one bite could be all it takes. Thank goodness he got away unscathed. This is of course a reminder when out in situations like we should keep a good eye on things around us. A wounded seal not far from you is a sign you should probably move away as predators are always opportunistic. Can't blame him though I would probably get sucked into throwing my line out too. Let's take this experience as a extreme one for learning.

Are sharks color blind? Seems a little funny that a yellow object would be mistaken for a wounded seal.

@oolala53 lol I'm sure his kayak didn't smell like a wounded seal. It was a clear calm looking day in hawaii. That bugga was just hungry..angry or both. I'm not a Waterman but am ancestrally Filipino. I 2nd the outrigger suggestion- our Sama tribe does paddle theirs. I'm sure you've some of my hapa cousins there to ask about our native vessels. Native bruddhas got a version too:) I'm going to venture your kayak may have made that lap-lap sound my fun surfboard makes on the water surface. I could be wrong but I think sharks are neurologically in tune with their stripe organs on lateral sides of body. (I think you clean fish so you may have seen this.) The sounds indicates struggling dying fish potential meal- to them. Yeah, you survived a misunderstanding. *I'm also a big proponent for aerial drone shark surveillance maybe financed by KZfaq. Maybe realtime alerts to waterproof smartphones. Let's hope human brain better than shark brain:)

@@georgeacenas2349 I have a Bixpy electric motor on my rudder but wasn't running it when the shark attacked, neither was I paddling at the time. I was basically floating. I think the whales (bigger accidental threat than sharks) and sharks hear and feel the vibration of the motor and stay away.
