The Bafoon Gamer great question, I plan to make a video on this to clarify some things. BMI is a work registration, you should have that "works" copyrighted through the .gov site. Note: it is the same price to register 30 beats as it is for 1!!! What I do: I register and copyright the beats I intend to fish out to majors and big placements, any that put the song at risk to be stolen. Selling via google, facebook and soundclick- I do not copyright all of them, especially those I lease out. There is such a slim chance that someone will make that song blow up. Better odds playing Mega Millions.

Just bought my first exclusive beat for my 1st ever Hitsingle, but now im kinda paranoid , how i get secure that i ever get a contract or track out? this is kinda weird to me. like what is my security as an artist buying those. I only have his bankdata but nobody even knows if thats his or a fake name ones.. I have no adress only his name. And im waiting for track outs now. to be honest i could not afford to sue him with lawyers and all that cost which comes with those problems. And i think almost no new artist could. Please Help me with some advice to secure not getting cheated.

JackboyBeatz productions Well with units its really just a limit that you give them and agree to allowing and if they abuse them you have proof that they were never given authorization. The main thing with leasing a beat and allowing a cap of units to be sold is that it allows you to sell that same right and beat thousands of times. And if you hear that specific beat on a tv commercial and you haven't given exclusives out, well then you know a large lump sum of cash is coming your way after you take them to court and prove that those rights were never given out and they owe you money. That is the main reason you are giving these rights out for. Honestly, 98% of these rappers aren't even going to sell more than 100 units on itunes so it's not about hassling them for extra money. With formats, just upload a basic mp3 with voice tags to display the product, then once payments received you send out the wav format and if in the right case, track outs.

Robert Anderson i send it with track outs!! I sell it exclusively and include a voice tag, some artists like it and keep it..they easily "mute" the track if they do not want it. On a lease I remove the damn thing lol they pay a lease fee to remove tags, marketing 101 tag the hook on every beat and nobody will jack you👊🏻

+Lance Ellerbe Yes, I have a completely different contract for split owners. I have one that allows them to use 100% publishing rights while giving the other 100% to me for producer or songwriter. I list that they need to register the works through BMI at 200% split. These contracts are only for solo exclusives - for example you make a beat custom for someone and you never leased it or registered it. They pay you a large fee to go about their business. Jonathan Lykes Yes and no. Depends on what I intend to do with it. Do you NEED to? No, absolutely not. If you are trying to land major placement with a particular track than yes get some sort of copyright done via ascap, bmi, or even copyright.gov

The contracts I sell are editable by yourself you input whatever you want. If you sell an exclusive you should have your rights written up, you make that choice if you want to offer royalty free exclusive beats like most, or 5% royalty commission on top of the sale. All your choice. Good luck!

Yes, however it is a psd document so anyone can change the terms in photoshop and make it for any rights. I just made it particularly for exclusives.

I would speak to a local music attorney about that, although the one I use I send worldwide..Now the question is, what happens if that artist is "independent" and makes that song huge without a label to pursue? Very sticky situation if it happens, which you will have a 0.000001% chance of happening.

No Drama Just Music distribution copies is hard prints, you need to look at synchronization rights under your contract.

Through BMI or ASCAP you register the beat and get a work number. The artist must then assign your work number to their published track, usually label representatives handle all this. If you are selling to an unsigned artist dont worry about royalties, sell it for a lump sum.

I believe you must decide whether or not you want to lease a beat or sell it exclusively, you can't lease it to people and then sell the ownership

people with non exclusive rights are allowed to use the beat until the license ist expired

The date of the project file and the date of the trackouts is going to be two different dates. So even if someone tries to steal your beats or has a chargeback its not going to matter because you have the original project file with the original date. Which that date will be earlier than the date thats on the track outs that you sent them. EVERYONE sends track outs when selling beats. In fact i'm actually was recording artist before a producer. You have to have track outs in order to have a quality song. Hence the beat has to be mixed again after the vocals are laid. Otherwise your just rapping/singing over a mp3/wav. So i don't know what he does when he completes his beats or starts his beats but regardless your computer is going to generate a date on your project file thats going to be sooner day/time then that of the track outs. Would love for 88 to chime in on this one. To bad he doesn't respond to everyone on such a helpful video for the newbies.

+roscoegino You missed why I mentioned this. With paypal, if anyone uses a credit card and you never shipped an item you have no proof of delivery and will lose a dispute charge. To stay safe, ship an envelope with a receipt in it, make sure to request signature upon delivery so you can have proof of that shipment which should match the clients address on credit card file. They will purchase the tracks, when you send them electronically you send a signed document for them. If it is non royalty commission then they dont sign it, as you are releasing rights to them you need to sign. If they are buying a track and the negotiation was split royalties then both parties need to sign and keep a copy for themselves. Youd sign first, and upon signing from the buyer the rights are now in place. Also, this is USA to USA advice. May differ over seas.

+Apollo B. Hey sorry for the late response. What do you mean by "Credits"? If you sell a beat and in the contract you state that you own 50% or some other amount of it and need to be listed as "composer" then those are valid credits and you gather "royalties" from their sales. As far as them shouting you out, they legally don't need to do this at all..So don't waste too much energy assuming they will treat you like DJ Khalid, keep in mind that guy pays those artists to work on HIS track, he then owns it 200%.

I personally use dropbox to transfer all large files that I send our clients. I upgraded my plan for my company so all employees can use it, login and send files themselves as well. Works great!

Ptyler if someone leases a beat, i give them rights for a lifetime. They can renew a lease if they sell over a limit (contract written). Exclusives are one owner, and yes I remove it because after that i cannot sell a new license since i handed over ownership exclusively. I use beatstars and it removes a track once exclusives are sold.

I don't have money to pay for a subscription yet, so I'm making my beat store with a free wix account haha my main problem right now is trying to find a way for them to sign the lease agreement like they do on beatstars. I haven't found a way on wix to do that, yet. I don't want to email every customer each lease before purchase. Wix isn't too producer friendly. It's a great starting place for recording artists, tho!
