Most people cannot name the quality control coach for their team off the top of their head. But in 2005, because of something he did during preparation for the NFC Championship against the Carolina Panthers, Seattle Seahawks quality control coach Gary Reynolds might have been the biggest reason why the Seahawks were able to make it to Super Bowl XL. And odds are, you've never heard the name before or the story before. This is the story behind the unsung hero of the 2005 Seattle Seahawks

Yeah, for some reason Shaun Alexander seemed to be lightly regarded and quite frankly a little disrespected. 8 heard things that he wasn't tough, avoided contact, and was only good because of his offensive line. From my perspective, I thought his running style was similar to Terrell Davis, he was always getting positive yards, and had a nose for the end zone. I also felt that between the 2001-'05 seasons, he was either the best back in the game or at the least in the top 3 (Marshall Faulk, Edgerrin James, Ricky Williams, Tiki Barber, Corey Dillon, Priest Holmes, Clinton Portis, Jamal Lewis, Ahman Green...I won't forget them either

@@rabbi4skin666 That’s a damn shame. As a Packers fan, he was one of my favorite running backs to watch when I was growing up in the 2000s (other than Ahman Green of course!), and his 2005 season was absolutely incredible. Over 1800 yards rushing, and 28 TOTAL TOUCHDOWNS, MORE THAN WHAT HASSEBECK HAD PASSING!!! Rightfully MVP given what he & that Seahawk team accomplished (with guys that not too many people outside of Seattle remember), and had he not had THAT season, Seattle probably would’ve been a 10-win at best team like they were through most of the 2000s, and probably having a much more challenging road to the Super Bowl.

A similar thing happened to me in high school. I got invited to the American Legion's Boys State camp in my state (if you don't know, it's basically a mock-government camp). We held an election for our slate of candidates and I happened to jot down the results in my notebook as one of my best friends would be representing our side in the final election. I also noted the results from the other races. I would later find out that the entire record of the results got deleted, and, of the 100+ people there, I was the only one who had a copy of the results. I didn't hold any role during the camp, but I did save the entire convention by writing the results in my notebook

Being a Seahawks fan across country during the early 2000s was painful, not for the on the field product, but how hard it was to get any coverage of the seahawks. Seeing a game on TV was a pipedream at best, then ESPN or any national sports media would never talk about seattle.

The 2005 team is what the 2004 team should have been. The Seahawks offense from mid 2002 until the 2008 season was prolific. Hasselbeck was a master of the system. In 05 the team was good enough to play above the bad breaks, like Alexander going down vs Redskins, DJack and Engram being out the early part of the season and Joe Jur filling in. The Seahawks played penalty free football with an average of 3 penalties per game over the season, that was until the last game where they were called for 11 penalties. Weird. 😂

Speaking of the Seahawks: You ought to do one on the game that actually saved the Seahawks in Seattle, and it was NOT a football game: It was Game 5 the 1995 American League Division Series between the Yankees and Mariners, a game that actually saved baseball AND football in Seattle. The Seahawks were already very close to moving to Los Angeles to replace the Rams and Raiders who moved after the 1994 season because of issues with the Kingdome during the 1994 season that forced them to play games at the University of Washington. The Mariners won that Game 5 in what turned out to be the last game ever played by Don Mattingly of the Yankees in the most dramatic way possible (after first having to win a one-game playoff against the then-California Angels in Seattle just to get into that ALDS) as if they lost, the Seahawks would have moved to LA (which they attempted to before the 1996 season before the current stadiums in Seattle were approved) and the Mariners would have been who knows where. Edited to add: This was the game in question: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p9hggqmklq61Z4k.html

In terms of bad officiating I think the SB that just happened between LA and Cincy was worse than this, with even weirder PI calls, missed face-masks, Aaron Donald lines up offside on his game-winning play and the refs didn't notice...but no one batted an eye over any of this for some reason

While I’ve lived 55 miles north of Seattle since ‘01, I’m from Michigan, a small town right at the edge of the lake and am a lifelong Packers fan. That being said, I paid for my brother and I to go to the divisional game so my brother paid for us to go to the nfc championship game…both games were great fun and loud as hell. Afterwards came the travesty known as SB 40, the worst and most biased refereed SB in SB history. Personally, I didn’t really care who won as the Packers weren’t in it, HOWEVER, I expected to see a good, fair, hard fought game and that wasn’t what that was. It was nothing more than a game to pander to a rapist and a over-the-hill running back “going home”….what a shitshow the refs put on. Totally disgusting. Holmgren should've had his 3 coordinators put the associated information on paper and in computer files. I'm not sure how he didn't have the foresight to do this.

@@matthewdaley746 You don't stumble ass-backwards into as successful of a coaching career as Holmgren had. It sounds like you're the one lacking common sense with such a silly comment.

@@matthewdaley746 Unless you're talking about SB32, which... weird topic change. Again, you don't keep getting back to the big game if you don't have "common sense." You can't even learn how the friggin' comma works, so you're not really in a place to talk.

Of COURSE this guy is FORGOTTEN. Who would WANT to REMEMBER ANYONE on a FOOTBALL TEAM that is WORSE than a 39.6 like the Seattle Seahawks? They should just SPIKE the football into the ground on EVERY single OFFENSIVE play!!!!!!
