In 1988, Phoenix Cardinals running back Stump Mitchell demanded that the Cardinals release him because of a reduction in playing time, and because the Cards were intent on replacing him in the backfield. The only problem? There was, quite literally, zero evidence to suggest this whatsoever

This is what we in the ADHD community call catastrophising where you take small details and let them spin out of control in your mind.

Mental health is a hell of a demon sometimes. Some people catastrophise and make up worst case scenarios in their head and it sounds like what Stump did. Good thing the Cards brass didn't take him at face value.

Pro sports, and many other careers, are places where there is always someone out to replace you. Add to that playing for the Bidwills and you can see the paranoia

Stump Mitchell did have a long coaching career after he was done playing, having last coached the Running Backs for the Browns last season. He was let go by the Browns during their offensive staff turnover in January

4:00 I was at this game. I was a senior in high school and took my then girlfriend to her first Eagles game. We sat in the 600 level. This was in 1982 a couple weeks after the strike ended. Stump was a great back and he and Earl Ferrell were a great tandem. Sadly he suffered a blown out knee the next season and never played again.

I’m looking at this with a mixture of puzzlement and amusement-I don’t know what stump Mitchell was thinking when he demanded a trade because his coach wanted the guy behind him to get some more playing time but he wasn’t thinking of benching him because he was valuable to the team! 😮😮😮😅😅

Made me think of Brian Mitchell. One of the bigger hof snubs of our time. Dude is second in total yards in nfl history to Jerry Rice yet everyone overlooks him cause he was a special teams player.

I actually went to the same college as Brian Mitchell, University of Louisiana-Lafayette, and we have his jersey retired. He was a great option QB for us before he was signed by the Washington Redskins to be a special teams player for them. Brian was one of the best versatile players in the NFL, having played kick returner, punt returner, running back, and believe it or not QB during the Body Bag Game against the Eagles. Also if we’re going to be inducting special team players in the Hall of Fame then guys like Steve Tasker should also be included as well.

I had no Idea that Doug Peterson got into coaching. He was Farves back up when I still watched football. Stump Mitchell was a very underrated player. If he got more playing time he would have put up big numbers but the Cards always had someone ahead of him on the depth chart. Every time I saw him play he made big plays even on special teams. In 1985 2 RBs ended up with 1000 yards with very few starts behind Hall of Famers. George Rogers and Stump Mitchell.

Pederson was the coach for the Eagles when they won the Super Bowl

I had no idea the Eagles won the Super Bowl. I stopped following football so long ago I bet the college players from that time are starting to receive votes for Canton

Strangely enough, he was later the Cardinals running backs coach during the Bruce Arians years.

I wish he was replaced for the game at the Buccaneers (thank goodness it was blacked out)! 😁 He had no reason to fear for his job because when I saw him play back then, he was pretty productive.

Gene Stallings was Wack as a coach,Lomax wasn't a bad QB,they should've gotten much more out of those 80s teams.

I wonder if SELF-HATRED would lead to a demand to be traded or cut.... you know , "You bastards are valuing me too highly, I'm shot, get rid of me, if you don't trade me I'll retire, because I'm pure shit this year" - slap bang in the middle of a 1000 yd+ season.
