I was 76 years old when I was diagnosed with stage 4 Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. A dear friend recommended that my wife and I listen to Mark Knopfler’s music. I had never heard about Mark Knopfler before and so I’ve started listening to him and it was amazing how how he kept me out of my head and put me straight into my heart through the process of simply listening to his words and music. It helped me take care myself I spite of cancer and after 6 months I was cancer free. I’m still listening to Mark Knopfler and I will listen to him for the rest of my life.

About 20 yrs ago I was talking to an English guy in a pub in California. He mentioned that he was on his way to see Mark Knopfler in concert and asked if I was a fan. I replied that I was a casual fan of Dire Straits etc. The look of incredulity that came over his face, I'll never forget. He then goes to the jukebox and plays 5 or 6 Knopfler tunes back to back and says nothing while they play. At the end, looks at me and says, are you a fan yet? Well, here I am writing about it 20 yrs later.

I'm 70 years old and I was never a big Dire Straits fan, frankly never listened to enough of their music. About two years ago this song kept popping up on my KZfaq suggestions. I finally listened to it even though I didn't even know who Mark was. So glad I did, I have become a bit obsessed with his music ever since. He looks like my late uncle Arne here, his face, body and demeanour (A. died aged ninety a few years ago). The two had the same kind of wry, unsentimental charm and practical hands (playing the guitar and arranging music for Mark, electrical & construction engineering, cars and gardening for my uncle). Needless to say, this detail make the song and this great performance even more poignant to me. And yes, this is a superb take of the song by all hands on deck. The only aspect I could be missing is to get to see Emmylou Harris step in and take part in it too (yeah, I know they were touring together and that she sat out on this one).

An absolute musical genius. My late father called Mark Knopfler the greatest music writer and guitarist of his generation. I'd be close to saying THE greatest. I have so many great family memories and in alot of them I can clearly remember dire straits setting the background ambiance. Even lying on his death bed dying from cancer my father had his portable stereo beside him playing dire straits till his end. I believe it kept him in a state of peace. And at his funeral he was walked out to Why Worry. So thank you Mr Knopfler for blessing us with your music. I truly do appreciate it. I hope to one day save enough money to buy a guitar good enough to do your music justice and learn to play sultans of swing. I'll go sit with my dad and play it to him.

I once heard Mark Knopfler in an interview acknowledge that there is no way he would have made it in the music business today. That says more about the rotten state of the music business than it says about the creative guitar genius who wrote songs as graceful and poignant as this, Romeo and Juliet. Thank God my generation had the taste and ability to recognise what is distinctive and timeless.

Agree - he wouldn't have made it past a small cult reputation today, neither as a solo artist nor with the original band. When Dire Straits came along they were actually seen as the antithesis of everything that was hot and happening in the music biz, everything you were supposed to be as a young band. A bunch of laid-back men approaching thirty, playing jazz/country /blues-tinged songs with low-key, half-muttered lyrics and the primary attraction was Mark's technically flawless, rolling guitar playing. It was 1977/78 and you couldn't have *got* further from punk! Music journalists who saw them at early gigs before they had been signed brushed them off as "competent but boring", The lyrics were about jazz bands, life in Newcastle and un-hip local northern artists ("In the Gallery").The rock press felt it was a kind of music that might have been played fifteen years earlier, before even the Beatles came along. Dire Straits was the kind of stuff that Punk was NOT, and punk was more or less where you "had to be" as a young band at that time. The debut album and their first singles were true surprise hits, both in the UK and across Europe, and they were picked up by people at FM radio stations (a type of music mixing that barely exists today when radio has become far more streamlined). No, they wouldn't have had a chance of breaking through to a major-label contract and big hits today, the music/media biz has long since stopped working that way.

We said goodbye to my dad just over a year ago. He was a massive Dire Straights/Mark Knopfler fan; looking back he probably wanted to be him.. We recently scattered his ashes in his hideaway in Spain and one evening I was sat next to the open bbq alone for a few minutes after a few beers and this version of Romeo and Juliet came on my KZfaq and I wished he was there to hear it; being the grumpy old technophobe, I know he wouldn't have heard this version before. What I do know though, having been passed his musical ear and the emotions that go with it, when that guitar tone comes in at 7:25 he would have been sat round that fire with me thinking the exact same thing and how wonderful it is. A lovely memory, and reminded of whenever I listen to it. I don't think you will read this Mark, but thanks for creating a moment in time.

What has always impressed me about Mark's playing is that while some other guitarists appear to make a big production with lots of grimacing and contortions just playing a basic 3 chord progression, Mark will stand there ripping out 64-note runs and barely breaking a sweat. Add to that his writing and his singing, and you have a true star.

I love this song in pretty much every incarnation. Have always been fascinated by how Mark changes the frame and arrangement every time he takes it out on tour. But the pure tenderness in this performance -- from the frame between the simple, low-key keyboards to that Resonator to the sweet interplay between Marks and Richard's electrics -- just flattens me.

I never heard of Dire Straits or Mark Knopfler until I went to college in 1986 (yeah there was that MTV song, but I didn't pay attention to that). One of my roomates put on Alchemy and I was blown awy. Tunnel of Love - crushed me. Amazing music. Nothing like it today...

I’m a generation younger than the true Knopfler era, but I love this with all my heart. He is so understated, the antithesis of the modern age of fame in a second. Just wearing jeans and a shirt, playing phenomenal music. Thank you Mark!

my dad taught me to love jazz from the 50s and 60s @@Terrx and that was before I was born. I love the rock'n'roll from that era as well, so yeah that theory you describe goes across the generations.

I cannot speak highly enough about this man and those who stand on the stage with him. He is one of the very few artist's who doesn't have the need to stand front and center. He simply doesn't have that kind of ego. He allows those talented folks who back him to shine in their own brilliance. Don't see a great deal of that. Having said that, I'm of the opinion that every note he plays and every lyric he sings are wrapped in such passion and emotion. One does not just listen to his music.....they feel it. He draws me so far into his music and it's a place I choose to stay for a while. Simply my Mark Knopfler loving opinon::)) !! I'm forever grateful for his existence and the beauty he shares with us. He is on a level all his own! Now should I tell you how I really feel about this genius:::))) He shines brilliantly in my eyes.

YES to everything. It is something of a paradox to me that I KNOW Mark Knopfler has a couple hundred million devoted fans - like you and like me - yet I still FEEL that he is badly underrated and unappreciated.

@fernandojorgerenart2638 Well, there's usually good news, and bad news...... the bad news is......there's is no bad news, 'cos when you die, your dead! and that's it.... no 'awareness', no 'sucking up' to a mythical entity, no anything! The good news is that Mark is here with us for a while longer, and every bit of his work is to his credit, and his alone...he didn't need 'celestial help', he did it all by himself, and crediting your 'imaginary friend' with any involvement, is to diminish Marks incredible abilities... Fortunately, his work will live on through the power of........... wait for it...... no, not your mythical god, but one man's ingenuity and the power of the internet !! ps. As good as the song is, I think even Mark would consider hearing his song in an endless loop for an eternity, to become the ultimate torture, 'cos he's far too creative.....

I love playing it over and over again because the song is beautiful. My girlfriend woke up. Stormed out of the bedroom and told me..."if you play that song one more time..." 😊
