Also another tiny detail they added in previous episodes is that Silco keeps little trinkets from Jinx on his desk. He has a little ashtray that Jinx doodled all over. It's the little details that show the real soft spot that he has for her up until this episode!

Good eye! Not a lot of reactors spot Jinx hiding in the background of that last shot, even after her eyes light up purple. Something I missed my first viewing that is passed over pretty quickly was the real reason for Sky's death. Viktor couldn't get the hexcore to change living matter (like plants) without them dying. That's why he went to Singed (Silco's mad scientist) for answers. Singed has a shimmer variant that would allow Viktor's body to survive the process. Viktor tried it on his leg first, carving the runes into his flesh, then injecting himself with the shimmer and cutting his palm, presumably to help act as a conductor. When his leg changed and he found he could run, he was so high off of the experience that he immediately went back to his lab to do it again, but this time with his body (theoretically curing his illness). In the scene he looks for the injector which had the vial of shimmer Singed had given him, only to find it was empty. He had used it all on the first shot in his leg. Frustrated and wreckless, he tried to do the transformation again *without the shimmer.* As a result, Sky walked in to find him about to touch the hexcore and she tried to pull him away. Viktor's body acted as a conduit for the energy current and it passed through him and took her instead. She had no runes and no shimmer, so it just turned her to ashes. Without Sky jumping into the chain, Viktor very likely would have died. She saved his life, and it was his own wrecklessness which resulted in her death.

Woww thank you so much for such a wonderful comment! I actually never saw Sky's death that way, and it makes the entire situation even more heartbreaking. It's always a little sadder when the loss we experience is loss of unfulfilled potential - and Viktor's desperation to cure himself, and finally knowing the feeling of running and the freedom with it, I honestly can't say that I blame him for wanting to complete the process. It's just such an agonizing situation overall... Thank you so much for the comment again, it was a pleasure to read!

One of the many things about this series that I love are the "show...don't tell" scenes. They're scattered throughout every episode and no matter how many times I rewatch it...I keep finding new ones. Maybe you caught this small one but it's the scene between Jayce and Ambessa (Mel's mom) when she's in the tub getting her spa on. The close up of her as she's talking, then the close up of Jayce as he's talking. It builds this tension...and then it pans out to show them both in the same frame. Look on the wall (at 7:13 in this video) and what do you see? People...soldiers maybe, armed with spears and they're all pointed at Jayce. The frame is loaded HEAVILY on the right hand side, deliberately, to give the viewer a kind of sinister feeling that Ambessa is more dangerous than she looks...and she ALREADY looked dangerous to begin with!!!
@OfficialMediaKnights
@OfficialMediaKnights Жыл бұрын
Woooow that's an amazing catch, thank you for sharing that!! Actually, the entire setup of that sequence is to show how confident and dangerous Ambressa is - the way Jayce first meets her should technically put HER in the vulnerable position. She's in a bath - naked. Yet the further the scene goes, we recognize that she is completely and utterly in charge. The writers did such an incredible job with this!

I do love Silco as an antagonist because he's not a villain, he does evil things sure, but to him the ends are always what justify the means. He sees how the undercity is treated and looked down upon. He wants a better future for his community, by getting them out from under piltover's thumb. He may hurt his own people along the way but that doesn't mean he doesn't care what happens to them. He was a desperate man who was driven to the edge once and found way to keep going and now he won't let himself or his city be driven to that edge again. He's tired of being the bullied and the only way he can see to get out of that position is to become the bully. But that doesn't mean he's heartless, it's the opposite of that, he cares so much for jinx and the undercity that there are no means he won't reach for to finally get the freedom they all deserve. Silco is my favorite character by far in this show.

What an incredible breakdown of Silco! Absolutely agreed - he is such a fascinating character, he makes us face our own leanings towards tribalism. It also makes us realize that the line between right and wrong can become very blurry depending on perspective and circumstance, and a character like Silco is the perfect conduit to do that!
@babette5918

Plus, there is a way to look at the situation where the people who suffer because of shimmer were going to suffer while under the thumb of Piltover anyway. Silco likely sees these people as lost in either situation.

Really enjoying this journey with you both! What is so great to take in by this episode is realizing most of the characters in this show are neither fully good nor fully bad - most of them are just people with their own points of view and trying to do the best they can and what they think is right, but the consequences of those choices rarely turn out the way they had hoped. It's just such nuanced writing! Enjoy the upcoming final episode! It's so good!

Exactly! Precisely why we wanted to include a little discussion to update you guys on our views. Nobody is truly good or evil. People make mistakes. And this episode had us feeling bad for Silco after seeing how desperate he was to save Jinx. Probably the only person he can call family now. This show is a master class in making you feel for it's characters. They way they make you cry for Sky who had only I believe 3 speaking lines and the least screen time of almost anyone in the show is amazing. Also, the way they tied Viktor desperation after showing he was crippled since childhood and tying that into his reason for trying again even though he ran out of shimmer. Also, don't worry, everything that you have experienced in this series so far has only prepared you for episode 9. Make sure that you have tissues and something to punch when you watch the finally.

Such good writing for everybody in this! Every character is layered and their objectives feel organic. Which I love. They don’t suddenly switch their personality just because the script calls for it. They stick to their guns and you start to understand all of them at a deeper level. Stay tuned for the finale reaction!

The thing with Silco as a character is that the writers couldn't make him look more like a bad guy in his appearance and that is why most people doesn't question if he cloud be right. He is pale scared and poisoned, on top has a black eye. But the truth is that that's no sign of evil but of the unhealthy environment he grown up and the betrails that were comited against him. If he'd look and talk like heimerdinger we would be on his side from the get go. Cause his archetype isn't an bad guy, he is a freedom fighter. It's just perspective. Also on the he made things worse in the undercity part. Actually for the kids in the factory it's an improvement. From the "meeting" we know how it used to be. He and Vander had to work in the mines with the toxic air when they were kids. The factory is actually saver and they have breathers. Even under Vander that wasn't better. Remember that vi and the others were criminals and Tiefs to survive.

The interesting thing about the scene with the noble girl at the beginning is that it's sort of a twisted version of the moral conundrum where there's a train heading towards ten people tied to the tracks, and you can flip a switch to divert the train but the other track has a single person tied to it. So either you allow fate to take its course and allow a larger amount of people to die, or you actively cause the death of the single person. In the show it's a case of there's three tracks, the first has thousands tied to it, the second has nobody tied to it, and the third has a single person tied to it. And while you know the train isn't on track three, there's no way to tell which of the first two tracks it's on. So you can simply hold fast and hope that the train is on track two, or you can pull the lever and switch to the third track where it's guaranteed only to kill a single person. Not a choice I'd want to have to make. Of course, it's generally only a choice you're going to have to make if you're a conquering general in a warring state, so odds are it's not a choice I'll ever have to make, lol.
@OfficialMediaKnights
@OfficialMediaKnights Жыл бұрын
What a great comment, thank you so much for that analogy! It's actually very on point, as it is, at its core, a choice that may be familiar to us all. To choose the lesser of two evils because, the tough thing is that even inaction has a consequence. It's an impossible conundrum, one where you can only do what you think is right. But as this show has revealed - it's never that easy or simple.

Im not sure if Silco really "made it worse with Shimmer". Of course there are addicts and everything negative connected with "drug enviroment" but... Shimmer gives Zaun steady finance flow from Piltover, mostly into pockets of chem barons but not all. Children working in shimmer factory is not a pleasant picture, but it could be quite good fate considering alternatives. Shimer has also sometimes beneficial effect in polluted enviroment of undercity, helping to survive harsh condition. IMO it is kind of mixed blessing.

I once heard a piece of writing advice which was to write every character as if they see themselves the protagonist of the story, and nothing I've ever watched has done that as well as Arcane. No character on this show just exists to revolve around somebody else--not henchmen like Sevika, not love interests like Caitlyn, not even the most minor side characters like Huck the shimmer addict. Every single character acts in line with their own values in pursuit of their own goals, and that's why this show feels so real. And so complicated lol. I 100% believe there's a place for black and white stories (Lord of the Rings is the peak example) but if you're going for this shades of gray approach, THIS is how you do it. Ask hard questions, and don't necessarily provide the answer. As for your question, "can it get any better?", yes because there's another episode 😂
@OfficialMediaKnights

Yes yes and YES! This series is masterful at storytelling and it’s writing. Pure quality! So many layered characters and how their interest conflicts with the interest of other characters so organically shows how skilled the writers were in the approach. "Silco is the main guy who caused all this suffering." I dunno about that. Did Maximillien Robespierre cause all the suffering of the French people? Certainly he contributed to it, in the fullness of time, but if I may be permitted a tiny bit of hyperbole - the Guillotine may have drunk too much blood during the French revolution, but I'm not entirely certain all of its thirst was unjustified. That's the problem with revolutions, essentially - some things ARE worth fighting for, and in the revolutionary business, you need to grab whatever tool is within reach, because you're always fighting from a position of inferior conventional strength - otherwise, why is a revolution even necessary? So no, in the main, the suffering in this show was created by Heimerdinger, and he is ultimately responsible for pretty much every ill that has befallen anyone in the show. Silco is a mere symptom. If he were to fail, or die, there's dozens like him at least that would pick up and carry on, because Zaun lives under an utterly intolerable rule and deplorable conditions, and that kind of situation breeds revolutions.
@OfficialMediaKnights
@OfficialMediaKnights Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! The real enemy is the system in place that causes this imbalance in the first place. It’s just ironic that even though his intentions are to help Zaun he contributed to what makes it worse even if it’s by a little compared to what the potential of his actions could bring. Heimerdinger should’ve taken action and try to help those in need that is for sure.
@th3voice
@th3voice Жыл бұрын
@@OfficialMediaKnights True, he contributes to the ills of Zaun and its citizens, but at least with him there's an endgame to it. He plans to go through rather than sit in the mud forever. I think I'd prefer that to Vander's strategy of being stepped on forever. In addition, there's another dimension to it; a political one. Silco's strategy for independence is to make HOLDING ON to Zaun expensive and unpalatable. Even from his position of limited, but extant, power and influence, it is not in his interest to make sure Zaun is a nice, safe place, because who doesn't want a nice, safe colony? If India had just been all nice and pleasant and non-threatening, odds are good Britain would still hold it. They left because it became more trouble, in many and varied ways, than it was worth. Ghandi certainly contributed, but he was not alone. Britain had uprisings and rebellions enough to stomp on, but they always had to be careful, because the optics of violently suppressing the peaceful/non-violent ones would be terrible. So it became untenable to send in the troops, but NOT sending them meant having no CONTROL. So distributing shimmer at fairly low cost accomplishes two things. Zaun remains a problem, because any time the Enforcers want to project power they have to come in highly concentrated, limiting the kinds of offensives you need to prepare to defend against. If they go in spread out, anyone on the street might take shimmer and tear a small group apart. Also... Revolutions aren't free. Consolidating whatever resources they CAN get for the shimmer, be it obedience, money or favours, is just common sense, in addition to trading with anyone outside that you can, of course. There is one situation in which this equation changes. If Piltover had an even more powerful ally outside that they could call in, Zaun's rebellion would need to go from everything being peaceful and quiet, then very suddenly toppling and fortifying before the external force can respond. You don't want to be a problem spot so that the third power commits troops before you're ready and positioned. Basically, Silco had little choice. He's probably been about as gentle as he can while leaving himself a path to victory, but if your only coins to spend to buy freedom is your countrymen, you owe the fallen to carry whatever on your conscience that victory costs, and pay the penance once the goal is reached. If the situation is dire enough, which I would argue it is, maintaining peace and the status quo becomes a greater evil than a war of revolution.

Thing is... Although Violet doesn't know this... She is not correct when she tells the council that Silco can't be negotiated with. Silcos entire plan is to "scare" Piltover and then to negotiate for the undercities independence from a position of strength. That moment when Violet and Caitlyn are addressing the council would have been the perfect time to negotiate with Silco, before Violet put the bug into Jayces ear about Jinx being the one responsible for the bombings in the upper city. Then Jayce wouldn't have made the demand on Silco to give Jinx up. A peace could have been hashed out that was equitable to both sides.
@OfficialMediaKnights
@OfficialMediaKnights Жыл бұрын
That does make sense, Silco's entire point is to gain independence for Undercity. In a way I can also feel Vi's perspective though - all she can see is someone that is violent, manipulative and 'took her sister from her'... This may have realistically been her last chance of getting Powder back - from an emotional stand point, that is

To be fair about your initial distrust of Silco, your thoughts that he was just pure evil is understandable. A more basic writing choice would have been for him to swoop in and just mold her to his needs. We're kind of conditioned through that writing trope, to assume that that would be the case. I love how this show subverts that expectation. If you go back and watch episode 3, when Silco is embracing Powder, you can see in the animation of just his EYES that he is being genuine. He's not smiling, he's not dead inside, he'snot hiding anything. His eyes are seeing himself in his youth in her plight. And he is in a way embracing himself. Giving her what he needed, and what she needed in that moment. Yes he is toxic, and he went about everything wrong. But at the end of the day, he cared.

I appreciate how thoughtful you guys are about the council scene! So many reactors and reviewers end up instinctively siding with Vi's "action now" point of view (even though oftentimes they were on Mel's side just moments earlier, when it was Jayce making the argument for action). But the point of that scene is that there is no good answer here. While doing nothing allows the crisis to fester, and while the time for diplomacy may have passed, taking action comes with risks and consequences as well. As you pointed out, it's not usually the bigwigs that suffer in war - it's the innocent bystanders who had no choice in their participation. And I love that the show makes this point in the most gut-punching way imaginable. It gives Vi the floor at the Council (complete with sweeping camera spin and soaring music), and lets her convince Jayce to escalate the situation with a seemingly-plausible strategic strike. Then it sets up this epic video game cutscene of a battle at the Shimmer factory. And just as you're allowing yourself to indulge, for the first time all series, in what you think is a clear good-vs-evil action sequence... bam. Jayce kills a kid, and we are reminded that this isn't a flashy LoL cutscene. This is a show that understands consequence, a show that lives in the murk and mire of human complexity, and a show that will never unambiguously reward uninhibited violence (even if it's cool as shit). This is Arcane. Can't wait to see your reaction to the finale.
@OfficialMediaKnights
@OfficialMediaKnights Жыл бұрын
This was such a great comment to read, thank you for taking the time and for your support! That does seem to be the running theme in this - the way the violence is shot is badass, graceful, even elegant - yet every time they rip us out of it to show us that it's all fun and games until someone innocent gets hurt. You're very right when you say there is no right answer - a change has to be made. But there will be a cost and whilst the violence may feel good in the moment, it will likely further the hurt and continue the cycle of violence. On the other hand, knowing what we know about humans, sometimes the diplomatic option also won't take because for that to work, there needs to be compromise on both ends. And considering the amount of trauma and grief that's involved, it makes sense for it to seem unlikely for some of our characters to not even see it as an option!
@peteryang5056
@peteryang5056 Жыл бұрын
@@OfficialMediaKnights Absolutely. It's why the ultimate "villain" of Arcane, inasmuch as there is one, is the societal structure of Piltover itself (and why, as well-meaning and kind as he is, Heimerdinger arguably has more culpability in the tragedies in the show than anyone). Vi and Jayce weren't wrong, exactly, that "maintaining the peace" through diplomacy was becoming increasingly untenable by the day. And Vi was "right" that, if you assume that the diplomatic option is a nonstarter, the best way to stop Silco while minimizing bloodshed *is* to kneecap his Shimmer operation. But that being the best available option doesn't necessarily equate to it being a GOOD one. The unfortunate truth is, there *will* be collateral damage, and that collateral damage *will* further inflame tension between the cities. And that will ultimately just further push Piltover and Zaun towards their inevitable conflict. The sad reality of this series is that all of this was the result of dice cast centuries ago, worsened by years and years of Piltover refusing to turn away from the path of ultimate self-destruction, even though they were the only ones with the power to make things better. By the time the series begins, tragedy was a foregone conclusion. And we see this clearly in the Shimmer battle. I love that this show understands that you can't wipe away centuries of neglect and injustice with a well-planned military strike. This isn't the Death Star, which you can cleanly defeat with a precisely targeted proton torpedo. It's something much worse - an unsolveable, tangled knot of history, hate, inequality, and trauma that will inevitably hurt everyone caught in its threads.

By killing that girl at the start Mel's mother Ambessa took a speedrun into becoming my most hated character on Arcane. I had thought maybe Mel could have said something that would have appeased her mother's cruelty, like as if the girl had committed some small crime like theft and if Mel had said she will become my servant, but then acted (as a ruse) harshly towards her, perhaps she might have lived. Then she could have eased up over time. I just went to the wiki of the episode and it said the captured girl was from a dethroned royalty. In the scene her mother explained that if she lived it would cause thousands of deaths. Presumably because people would fight to get her back. It kind of feels like the kind of move certain people on Game of Thrones would make. Just because I understand the scene now doesn't make me hate it any less. It was a hastily made cruel decision with barely explained context. It explained who Ambessa is pretty quickly. She's power hungry and will take whatever she can for herself or to pass along to her daughter. Mel had a moment of defiance against her, saying she doesn't need her help. I wonder if more of that will develop. Maybe they won't get along.
@OfficialMediaKnights
@OfficialMediaKnights Жыл бұрын
That's a very accurate point, and bears repeating for sure! It was a very strong choice to introduce Mel's mother this way as it also serves to purpose to explain why Mel doesn't wish to engage in war. She wants to take her time and act more defensively, and this moment brought light to that. Combining this with the fact that she was basically ousted by her own family, it makes some of the lines between them that much more clear. It was an unbelievable act of cruelty- a senseless one, at that. It was honestly hard to watch, that poor girl...

Amanda Overton (works on scripts for Arcane) got asked if Cassandra (Cait’s mom) had caught Cait sneaking girls into her room before since her reaction was so mild. Amanda replied that there was “definitely something familiar about that scene.” And the fandom ran with that. Caitlyn the Lady Killer. I mean, the way she was flirting with that woman at the brothel, can we really be surprised. The Breakup Scene is so good for a number of reasons. Mostly I love the idea of distance that’s been played with in their relationship. Their partnership starts with Cait taking a step over a line to reach out to Vi, and since then there’s been so much closeness and touching between them. But here, in the rain scene, Vi is purposefully keeping distance with Cait even as she tries to reach out again, refusing to look at her as she calls them oil and water and says that Cait should forget her. But there’s also this second bit. Vi’s about to do something dangerous and reckless. And she’s doing what she did all those years ago with Powder. Walking away to protect her. With Powder it was protecting her from herself until she managed to cool down. Now, with Cait, it’s protecting her from being dragged any further into her drama. Keeping her safe. Unfortunately, she doesn’t count on Jinx showing up at Cait’s home but… I love the visual of Viktor finally being able to outrun the boat. “Of everyone, you’re the one [Cait] trusted to do something.” Vi really holds Cait’s opinion in high regard now, huh. Lot of trust. The second time we’ve seen Cait’s Detective Mind at work and it’s just her replaying the Break Up scene over and over while in the shower. Like girl… The fact that it’s Skye that dies this episode is interesting because we don’t know her that well. All we know is that she has a bit of a crush on Viktor and works with him. But that’s the point. Viktor didn’t know her well either. It’s the idea that you get so absorbed and obsessed that you don’t see the consequences it has for those around you, even just innocent bystanders. The idea that of you didn’t know this person and now you never will. Something I want to add about Cait’s mom. I like that they don’t make Cassandra just straight up awful. Like yeah, she worries about image and all that but she still got her daughter a meeting with the council and gave her approval to go after Vi after the meeting. Even her turning on Jayce in Act 1 can be seen as once she found out that he had dangerous explosives in his possession and they were forbidden magic orbs she decided that she didn’t want her daughter around him. She’s not perfect by any means but she’s not awful either.

Just started this review waiting to see if the previous dislike of Mel will change. Fun review. I think it's interesting how people perceive Mel in the beginning and I like watching how their perceptions change. Personally, I doubted her a bit but never disliked her because I saw truth in what she said. Some people like to treat her and Jayce like their selfish people but I think they were some of the most selfless people. Jayce and his care for Piltover and then later doing all he could for Viktor. Mel caring about her families opinions and the betterment of Piltover. They are good people who want the best for everyone. The thing is Mel was taught at a young age that this world is not straight forward so she learnt to play the game early whilst remaining good. She then teaches Jayce the realities of the game and how to win at it too. It's a selfish world but they want good so they must also do some plays that may look selfish in the beginning but really they are defense acts. They actually hold a middle ground more, in my opinion, in comparison to Heimerdinger. He seemed to be pretty safe in everything going on making him extremely complacent until he was removed against his own will.

Great analysis of the episode and the show in general. This show has an amazing character development where you hate and love characters in a matter of seconds. We all love grey characters, with their goods and bads and this show give us just that. You can understand why they do what they do and sympathize with them but at the same time hate what they did because it affects others we also love. Like Silco, he loves Jinx and he sees her like a daughter but he's hurting kids by making them addict to the shimmer. Jace wants the greater good but he never witness war so he doesn't know what it will do to the others. This show is really amazing and it's sad you are reaching to the end of the season because you want more of this characters and their story.

there's a thing that Mel's mom says that always gets me.. "i would give you the world, child, if you can prove you can take it".. Silco uses the same wording/attitude in his interactions with Powder... so there's this parallel with the manipulation Mel's mom and Silco use to mold their daughters.. wondering if this will surface in Season 2..

Interesting parallels! I guess we’ll have to wait and see. We don’t want this to end! How long till season 2!?

What I haven’t seen many (if any) people talking about is how the “good” and “bad” people flip depending on if it’s topside or bottom. Marcus was working with Silco and bad, whereas Vi wanted to fight and was the hero. Meanwhile, Mel wants to work with Silco and is “reasonable” but Jayce wanting to fight is “foolhardy”. That struck me during the scene where Caitlyn and Vi address the council. When we see Vi and Jayce team up, I was conflicted because I supported Vi but thought Jayce was being reckless. Such good writing that creates such good tension.

Yeeeesss!!! The way this show plays with perception and makes us question our own biases is incredible! You hit the nail on the head with this comment, thank you!

@@OfficialMediaKnights I mean regarding the comment about building weapons. The saying "If you would have peace, prepare for war" may seem counterintuitive, but it's really the only "surest guaranty of peace," as Roosevelt put it.

It's certainly an interesting topic for debate. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best type of situation.

@@OfficialMediaKnights It's more than that; strength deters aggression, rather than encouraging it. Bad actors usually prefer to attack the weak, not the strong.

Yeah.. honestly that moment had us stumped.. I feel like it was the moment where Vi starts to come to terms that it's not all Powder in there anymore, but also Jinx - it's so emotionally confusing to think about.

Love how nuanced the relationships become by act 3. You feel every little bit of history. Every new alliance and the feelings of betrayal slowly coming back out. The tensions were so well built for the finale!

"He cares for her in his twisted way" as Denise mentioned, the Jinx and Silco relation is topic for looots of psicological discussions. Silco cares for Jinx but is not a "good" father for her, he fueled her traumas even that unknowingly, some of their scenes together are purposely unconfortable (as said by the Arcane team themselves), they are both broken people, they both needed help so could not help each other. Oooh the finale is on the corner, I hope we get the season 2 soon 🍀

Yesss! I love that you mentioned that - what they are going through seems strikingly similar to trauma bonding. They have both lost so much and gone through so much that they have somehow become codependent, fueling each other's trauma and grief. It aided their loneliness but not their healing, and looking at it that way just makes it more heartbreaking. I love how layered their relationship is, it just shows the lengths they have gone through to make these characters feel so real!
