'Hook' was so ahead of its time. Respecting the source material and taking it seriously, while putting a genuine twist on it that it adds to the lore...like, it was never appreciated in its time. Films back then rarely worried themselves with source material. In fact, creators were often encouraged to completely ignore it when possible. As long as it bore some vague resemblance to what its referencing, that was often enough for studios and audiences alike. The fact that Hook dared to be different really helped it stand out, which is probably why it's such a cult classic now.

It was a movie with a heartfelt message for adults, marketed to kids. No wonder it didn't do well at the box office. You had to be a grownup to appreciate what Spielberg did in this wonderful movie.

Peter reacts like Wendy is crazy. And yet, at the same time, he remembers. There is such an unsettling quality to this film which is hard to put into words. It's like Spielberg managed to capture the duality between innocent youth and cold cynical adulthood, between light and darkness, on celluloid. Powerful film which deserves more credit than it received

I never understood this scene and the dialogue as a kid, but watching it as I am older it breaks my heart with how Peter and Wendy grew apart. She moved on and he stayed in Neverland for so long. And Maggie Smith does great job capturing that lost love she wished she could have had with him.

also watching the 2003 version made it more heartbreaking to see when i rewatched Hook again. same here i didn't understood the dialogue too on it as a kid since i was only 7 years old but still was so entertained of it. Also more shocking when i rewatched it in high school i never knew the director was Steven Spielberg that did this movie after repeatedly watching it like crazy lol.

@@Theaterg15 Ikr? I feel like watching the 2003 version, maybe Return to Neverland by Disney and Hook as a sort of fan-viewed trilogy was good because of how you see Peter and Wendy's relationship change as time goes by. I actually shed a tear when in Return Peter reunited and lamented a little at seeing Wendy.

Imagine being an adult, an Attorney at Law, a serious and rational man with a wife and children...being told by your beloved Wendy (with whom you developed a very different relationship) that you *are* Peter Pan. Not in some metaphorical 'magic of childhood' sense, but that you are the *literal* Peter Pan. Not only does he exist outside of fiction, but that YOU ARE HIM. The one you heard stories of as a child(well in a sense), the one starring in the Disney classic. I'd have thought she lost her marbles along with Toodles.

There's something incredibly haunting about the despair Maggie Smith puts into her voice when she asks the all-important question "Peter, don't you know who you are?" And something equally grim in her voice when she says "Yes boy. Yes" Very reminiscent of the way Yoda sounds when he says "You will be. You. Will. Be." to Luke after Luke says he's not afraid in Empire Strikes Back

I mean it does kind of make sense in that he was a child when he met her and could only age in the real world, which he only ever spent any signifigant time in AFTER meeting Wendy. So the combined time he spent in the real world with Wendy (a life time for her, a year or two for him) aged him up enough so that when he saw Moira it awakend something within him, and he was able to see her as more than a female child / potental playmate and saw the future he could have. He never looked at Wendy in that way because he was too young, and because of his preexisting relationship with her as his friend, and/or mother.

I'm just going to say it, I think the story would have been better if Wendy was the one who caused Peter to abandon his life of eternal youth and marrying her to truly live. The Moira character just feels out of nowhere, more likely so that the film could be in the 90s. Wendy just has a better connection that we are already familiar with.
@juliangrant9718
@juliangrant9718 Жыл бұрын
That takes away the point of the story that connects directly to the original animation. The themes of growing up. The themes in this movie is about getting old and capturing your youth. Wendy is used as an example of someone who is pretty much on her last days. She's facing death. She's in a regrettable state where she now realises that children should cherish their youth and not be forced to grow up so fast. This is in contrast to young Wendy who was a maternal figure for Peter who always tried to steer him into growing up and stop acting like a child. Wendy's story is meant to be tragic. You can look at Moira as a youthful stand-in for an adult version of Wendy that did end up falling in love with Peter. It was a second chance for Peter since Wendy did move on and obviously had someone in her life. But Wendy would just die in front of Peter without his story ever having a happy ending. So Moira is a logical passing of the torch since he does see so much of Wendy in her. Plus just making Wendy and Peter find happiness does seem a bit cheap. Sorry, this was a bit of a waffle..
@tjjordan4207
@tjjordan4207 Жыл бұрын
@@juliangrant9718 I get what you are saying, and I agree with you to an extent about Wendy's character and story in this version of Hook. And the tragedy of what 'could have been' is done very well. But when I was rewatching the film a while back, I had a hard time buying into Peter's reasoning for wanting to stay on Earth. The biggest problem is Moira. The character just isn't given enough screen-time or even have much of a character to stand out, and I don't buy the relationship between her and Peter. I get the idea of what you are saying the relationship between the two of them is, I just have a hard time seeing it because it isn't done very well. The more I think about how I would have done the movie, the more I started to picture Wendy being the one who ultimately won Peter over, and it held a lot more weight (due to their established history) than what this film does with Moira. The way how I envisioned it happening was Peter coming back to visit Wendy after the original adventure a few times but soon realizing that she's getting older and that she will be the same age as him soon, which begins to make him face harsh realities. By the time she is one or two years older, it hits him hard and is forced to confront the idea of her being a grown-up and it makes him question what he wants when seeing former Lost Boys being adopted by families. For me, Wendy makes more logical sense because while she may regret growing up as fast as she did, she is the one who could help Peter grow up and mature beyond his childhood, even be the one to keep him in check.

It's shows Wendy as an old lady in regret. She speaks of how she was once his only favor. And that she was expecting Pan to bust through during her vowels and stop it. But he never came. Ultimately Peter was always her love, but the tragedy of the story is that Peter realized his place in the world to long after to be with Wendy. The story of Wendy is a tragic one. Especially since the result of her not staying with Peter, she ended up living through 2 world wars hitting her country. Now, after watching Peter Pan 2003, i really do wish that Pan would have stayed with Wendy.

It's kind of explained in the film but it had something to do with the magic and with him being in Never land for so long that when chose to leave he forgot about this time there because he had to grow up. Wendy had never really lived there like Peter did just visited so it didn't have as much of an impact on her.

I am sorry for saying this but what if Peter had asked Wendy "Gran was my biological family organized crime and now they have unfinished business to take care of? This would have been a good opening for Wendy to explain things however I guess this would only work if the 1991 movie Hook was a TV series😅

I've thought about that as well. The two movies have a bit of a blend of style, although the 2003 version has more CGI. I remember a fan-made old music video that combined scenes from both films that told an interesting story, although it sadly has been deleted for years now.

@@JJJJ-lk8wj Due to being owned by separate companies, they are officially not set in the same universe as each other. But unofficially speaking, there's nothing stopping you from seeing the two as canon to each other (as neither company has denied or confirmed it), aside from the actors being different and one flashback sequence in Hook that is different from how it is done in the 2003 version.

@JJJJ yeah, especially with the no other girl held your favor the way I did, line. 2003 points that out with Hook saying he does have feelings? he has feelings for you. The movie making the emphasis throughout that she was the girl that he had feelings for. Plus it was kind of like some child love story.

@@tjjordan4207 According to the movie director he wanted the 2003 film to be a prequel to Hook. He even paid Dustin Hoffman to reprise his role as Hook, but the actor thought the film was too dark and gritty for him. He wanted to play a more comical villain role like the Disney version. However he gave the new Hook actor his blessing and even liked the film on release. Also another fun fact, when Hook was made, it was originally gonna be a sequel to the Disney classic. Stephen Spielberg was a huge fan of that film and wanted to take aspects from that film to place in his own movie. This is why Neverland looks so much more practical and magical; as well as colorful and similar in design to the 1955 version. Disney of course said “No” but allowed the film to be made.
