People do not realize how much of an important this song is. Especially when you are around people that simply do not care about changing the world for the better. I expected people to go all over heels for this song on social media, like i was researching a review or reaction and found nothing,which breaks my heart. It especially sucks because Hui was inspired by a black painter to make this song. Im not sure if other members are involved as well. This song matter to me so much. And i hope you all never give up when it comes to speaking your voice for justice in kpop and in general.

Please guys, note that they didn't have a proper rest after rtk when they filmed the performance mv and it was already too hot out there and the setting was full of fire and dust. it must've been difficult for them to shoot the mv due to the circumstances. Pls let's appreciate it more and love it even if it's a performance mv and not full cinematic mv. Our boys still did amazing.

This mv is just throwing bombs at the whole kpop industry.. They are being like yeah ignore us and all but we are self crowned.

I just gotta tell that this concept was artistically thought by Hui (the guy who just hit 6 consecutive high-notes lol), his inspo is Jean Michel Basquiat (a painter) with Neo-expressionism style focused on dichotomy. He endeavor the lyrics to depict their path (as a Pentagon or just ppl's hardships in general) in correlation to Basquiat's art (and his famous crown logo) He was so passionate when doing this to the point that the instrumentals has to be classically stirring too. They have been working so hard as a self-produced group, my boys are not just idols, they are an artist.

Fun fact: Hui (pentagon leader to be exact the man who slayed the high notes) created this masterpiece. He wrote and composed this song, genius indeed. He also made most of PENTAGON songs, title tracks like Like this, runaway, shine, naughty boy, humph, shalala, dr bebe, daisy, and do or not. Not to mention their b-sides, im telling you you wont regret stanning them. So go ahead and stan them now! All rounder group

The title "Basquiat" was an American, dark-skinned artist whose symbol was a crown with three peaks (they have a symbol on arms). He was using his art to fight with racism and to support the black community. I think his character is closely related to the song

am i the only one who's satisfied with the fact that we got a performance video instead of a mv? i mean basquiat is MEANT to be performed, they produced it for a survival show where they were expected to show their performance skills so it makes sense to me? with one video only they got to prove that they're the whole package: they all got dancing skills, acting skills, and phenomenal stage presence/aura regardless of each member's position in the group. great job pentagon !!

Okay, let's talk about the masterpiece Basquiat actually is. It's not only a great song with an incredibly hard choreography BUT ALSO the message it sends is deep and fascinating (this is just my personal interpretation of the video). For a while they were torn between making music gp likes and become popular or making the music they actually want to make, even if that meant having less recognition as a group. This pressure made them feel trapped like prisoners, and even though they tried to escape, they always went back to that feeling. This internal fight drained them and felt like they needed to "breath" (Kino's moment), and that's when everything starts to change and they start freeing themselves for good. The moment that shows they're totally free is when Kino says "lights on", instead of being tied up, he's the one holding the strings this time, the one in control, and he lets them go afterwards, he won't need them anymore. From that moment, they have more energy than ever because they've realized they don't need to comply, they "make and put on the crown themselves".

I wasn't into Pentagon when I first heard this, and I think this might have been one of the first if not the first Pentagon songs I listened to. But I remember the thing that really stood out to me was Hui's voice and he quickly became one of my favorite voices in kpop.
