I have lived with this for over twenty years. I have great faith in God and I can still eat and talk and breathe on my own. I am fifty five and I live in a nursing home. I've been here for almost seven years. I have an eye gaze computer that I spend most of my day on. I Skype with my daughter and grandson, and I keep up with friends on Facebook. All in all, I love my life!

I am a caregiver and I recently had the honor of assisting and getting to know a 63 year old woman with ALS just before she passed away. Unfortunately, her husband also suffers from a terminal disease. He is only 71 years old. Life is short, folks. Don't take anything for granted.

What's awful is that this guy was one of those ALS patients who had the disease running in his family. His mother died from ALS when he was pretty young. He apparently chose not to have children so they could not inherit it. Very heartbreaking.

Tim has great courage - most people including myself feel that they couldn't or rather wouldn't want to live with ALS. It is so obvious that everyone loves Tim to pieces - right down to his lovely dog (the way he lies on Tim's feet is such a sign of love). To live with most long term illnesses or disabilities is a nightmare (I know it is a struggle for me every day with mine) but to have support and the courage to keep going like Tim has is incredible. If he has lost his fight for life - he had the love he needed and that was a wonderful thing. For his lovely lady - she obviously realised long ago that love knows no boundaries.

mini dwarfdude my symptoms started in my left leg and foot about a year before my diagnosis. We didn't think much of it since I've had 5 back surgeries. Did all the regular tests and imaging and finally had the EMG done. Now my legs are pretty weak with my left knee not functioning at all and both of my arms are should 60-75% with left being weaker. I get fasciculations in my right leg, both upper arms, back and chest a little bit and then my fingers jerk. My breathing is the one thing that has changed from being in the Tirasemtiv trial. Went from 56% FVC and a 70% SVC to 88% FVC and 93% SVC. I have had colds and lots of pollen which has caused my numbers to drop to the low to mid 80%.

This is a horrible disease. One of the worst I’ve ever learned about. I pray to God we find a cure. To know everything going on. You hear see feel but u can’t make one move or say anything.. absolutely horrible.. I feel bad for anyone that has had this , does or will. I think having his dog around him is so beneficial and amazing. Seeing him lay on his leg brought me to absolute tears. Animals love and I think it’s a more pure love than any human could possibly express.. I see this man has many that care for him and that’s such a blessing. Very sad story wish I could had done something for them…

This is why it's so important to legalize the Death with Dignity Act of Oregon for all States in this union.
@ojibwagurl1951
@ojibwagurl1951 5 жыл бұрын
WTF is wrong with you? This man just showed you what true dignity really is and you mouth off about your personal shit. Go vote. And know this. The reason people choose death is because they are afraid that the doctor will not allow them enough pain medicine.We need to be their voice. People are afraid to be a burden. We need to assure them its an honor to assist them. People are embarrassed about being incontinent. We need to stop saying "Diapers" and we need to Love and reassure. We do not ever want people to think its ok to let people die. Do you get it? Should Drs choose who can die? Soon the elderly will be disposable. The disabled will be "Let go" and now, even people with chronic depression can be given lethal doses of meds in a certain country. People want to live. Aids used to be a death sentence. Ebola can be cured if caught in time. What if its easier to let people die then search for cures? Think about it.

@ojibwagurl1951

@MRO My point exactly. You should never be in pain longer then it takes to admin a dose of pain med that works for you. Doctors worry they will be liable but you are not a drug abuser. your Doctor is under prescribing and needs to be sued. Get on his ass now and demand proper pain management. Invasive surgery is performed on people who are semi conscience, they dont feel a thing. I have seen this happen and there is no excuse, you can get help with this. I understand your choice. I respect your choice for you. I can't stand seeing people suffer when they are doing so because their doctor under prescribes. Tell him you want your dose of pain med increased and now. Trust me, you will get help if you are firm, but you should sue his ass anyway. Doctors know you won't be around, and/or are too weak to pursue this but it needs to stop. You deserve to be comfortable and if you press the issue and be firm , you will get proper dosage and remind him He, works for you. Period.
@ojibwagurl1951
@ojibwagurl1951 4 жыл бұрын
@Kimberly Marshall Thats exactly how I feel. People matter to me. Tough shit. I want people to know I'm not like you. There is no reason people should beim pain and doctors have medication to prevent that. I'll speak up and doctors listen. They listen much more with support People who will admin and monitor meds. You are heartless to generalize and act as though all People who have a terminal illness should be allowed to die. You don't know them all. Some just need to know they are well worth working for and not considered a burdon. How about get the attitude that all life is important and then listen to each person's issues and needs and make sacrifices instead of agreeing that expediteddeath of sick People is the best solution for you and them People think they are a burden and they are not. It's an honor to assist them. People feel obligated to others and don't want to spend savings on themselves so they can leave others money. People fear dignity issues. That should never happen. The medical community and caregivers need to step up and make sure people know privacy and things will be respected. People need to Quit calling adult undergarments "diapers" and treat I'll people right. They have reasons they want to die and most of them, like pain can be avoided, at least made tolerable. I will always give my opinion on this. Pretty soon it will be ok for doctors to decide who should die. Just cause someone is terminal doesn't mean they should be made to choose death because they don't want to suffer. Let's get that fixed. Let's make sure people know they matter and they will have the best care possible. People will choose life if they have the choice of a decent last few months. And they need to be cared for by people who want to make them comfortable and who won't give up on that. If everyone had the attitude that people be allowed to die for certain reasons things will get bad. People can end their lives whether others care or not. I care. I will never watch someone end their lives early but as their care person, I will get them to who they can see that are medically assigned in Oregon. Then I'll quit.

I agree, but I also have a life limiting, genetic disorder called Marfan disease, and that can get me down, but until their is more money for research, we all have to live with the hands with which we are dealt 😔

If I ever had a terminal illness whether it would be this or a terminal type of cancer, I would go the holistic route (although I already eat fairly healthy), and I would choose to forgo treatment. I would like to spend the remainder of my time with my family, but not confined to a hospital bed. Thank you for sharing your story. I don’t know much about ALS and I feel like there isn’t much information on it.

I realize now I shouldn't complain about my body when Tim cant even move his! I try to be thankful. Challenges are hard. I'm 26, I can still live normally. I have bad chronic pain flares. I went from a healthy 130 pounds down to 102. A CT scan showed joint damage 'bone on bone' i was diagnosed by a specialist degenerative joint disease. It commonly affects older people in their 60s of older, i happened to have it prematurily. Certain tasks are harder to do. I can only work 3 hours a day due to physical restrictions. The pain is mentally hard to deal with. I really feel bad for people like Tim though. Imagine not being able to move.

How precious life is. How we worry about the most trivial things when really we are so lucky with so many diseases in the world we don't have any. I am so sad for Tim, I hope he will get better, he seems like a good and strong person.... I am so blessed to have a healthy body, the rest doesn't matter... health is all that matters..

But the dog - I just LOVE the fact that they don't keep the dog away due to the wish of a sterile environment e.g. Dogs are well known to be used as therapy dogs in hospitals anyway and are known to be less a liability of bacteria and disinfection than children. And he even get to go in the bed too. So so wonderful of them to let this cutie of a pet, be with his beloved human and cuddle.

I lost my sisters-in-law to this horrible disease. I have seen what ALS does and the pain it causes not only those afflicted with it but also the toll in takes on caregivers and family. If you are moved by this then please consider contributing to your local ALS organization or to organizations like Team Gleason. BE THE CURE!

Timmy had medicaid and medicare, and that's what paid for his care. He did have health insurance when he was diagnosed, but oddly, when the insurance company "reevaluated" his risk scores, his premium went up by about 500%. But, for those people who have too much money to qualify for medicaid, and not enough to pay for the care, my heart goes out to them. I have no idea whatsoever how anyone does that.
