Performance at the foot of the Eiffel Tower in 1989 for its 100th anniversary. Mireille Mathieu sings La Marseillaise, the French national anthem. According to reports at the time, "Mathieu sang the anthem of France so grandly and shrewdly that tears welled up across the country, many patriotic citizens even needed medical treatment." Ten years later, she was awarded the Medal of the French Legion of Honor.
My translation to American English, weighing literal accuracy, lyrical style, and contemporary US context.

If that won't inspire you to fight for your country, nothing will.

This anthem makes my blood boil, and my heart pound with courage! And I'm not even French! When this was written, the French people were having a revolution against their own tyrant, and 7 nations of Europe were also invading France at the same time. Les Marseilles is truly a rallying cry of the people to fight for their land, their freedom. The French have taught the world a lesson about human rights and democracy, a lesson still needed today. Respect! ✊🏻

I wonder how many non-French speakers understand that the words speak of spilling the enemies' "impure blood" (sang impur) into the furrows of the ground? Powerful.

Reminds me of how stirring the scene in “Casablanca” was where the French patriots drowned out the Germans.

The performance of La Marseillaise in the movie "Casablanca" symbolically silencing the Nazis who started out singing their own German song, is one of the most patriotic moments in cinematic history!

La Marsellaise will always be the basic pattern on which any rabble-rousing march (L'Internationale, Can You Hear the People Sing from Les Mis, etc) is based.
