To me the first DLC seems to be set around in a Kimodameshi, or test of courage, where children get into a haunted place or atraction full of ghosts and other monsters to prove their bravery. Is not hard to see the deal here is to enter one to find and defeat Ogerpon along with those three starter like Pokémon. In fact I think Ogerpon is more of a trickster just acting in the role of the villain, like a theatrical act to amuse villagers and tourists.

Ogerpon's shy glance around the mask and the wicked-looking sneers of the Momotarou animal trio make me think of how when young kids play games with heroes and villains, someone has to be the villain and the one they've "chosen" to be the "villain" is more of a victim to a trio of bullies. Ogerpon being described as a hero could be seen in its good deeds performed while behind a mask in a pseudo-sentai manner. Now this is just extremely loose speculation, but it could also be a reference to the 1918 Spanish Flu Epidemic named after the one European country that wasn't directly involved in the first World War, tying it into the Iberian peninsula influence of Scarlet and Violet. Neither side of the war knew the origins of that strain of influenza and none of them wanted it to be named after their country, so they named and blamed it on a third party.

The reason why it's called the Spanish Flu is because Spain was the first to openly report on it. The high commands on both sides kept the fact that there was a disease sweeping the trenches a secret. Spain not being involved in the war meant there weren't military personnel telling the papers what they could and couldn't write

I like the idea of "Villains Who Aren't Actually Villains, But Villified By An Imperialist Force." So yeah... Shuten Douji is one such. Especially considering his main "crimes" are... getting drunk and spooking people while wearing a mask. And he goes out like a chump, being poisoned by samurai he welcomed into his home as guests. Villains don't violate the laws of host and guest... Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by God BECAUSE of flagrant violations of Sacred Hospitality. Zeus and Hermes got treated like crap by a whole village while disguised as mortal travelers... so they turned the village into a lake and everyone who lived there into fish. Because Zeus is the god of hospitality, and you DO NOT TREAT YOUR GUESTS WITH CRUELTY.

I had a suspicion that Ogerpon was based on Shuten-Douji. Makes me wonder if it has a bigger, stronger transformation of some sort based on Shuten as he's seen when Minamoto-no-Raikou encountered him. It also makes me wonder about what would be exclusive to Ogerpon, like an ability alluding to Shuten-Douji's drunkenness, or maybe a signature move based on where if it's fainted on the same turn it uses it, the user gets attacked by its mask as an allusion to how Shuten's severed head attacked Raikou.

I think Ogrepon's mask kind of looks like a hero mask considering how it's shaped, I think the story of the teal mask might be one of revised history, where the villainous dog, monkey and pheasant took over a town protected by Ogrepon, kicked it out, and demonized it. I feel like an example of this is the masks at the festival, which depict the dog pheasant and monkey as Sentai heroes, and the mask that Ogrepon wears being warped into an Oni mask. I'm open to being wrong but that's what I've read into it.

I immediately picked up on Terapagos's long flowy tail, and thought "Oh yeah! That's probably a minogame! Those turtles from Japanese folklore that got algae on their backs and have very long lifespans." But the Hiroshima Taro story completely flew over my head! I think it would fit nicely with Scarlet and Violet's past and future motifs, what with the dragon palace's time shenanigans. Wonder what kind of paradox pokemon we'll get to see in that dlc. Always nice to hear more about folk stories you haven't heard before. One thing I will drop my 2 cents on is regarding our new turtle. While yes it will be part of the 2nd DLC, we're still missing our culprit of the terastalization phenomena who is mentioned in Area 0: a place brimming with energy and dazzling geometric crystals that not only allowed the paradox pokemon to our world, but also the ability to change the types pokemon. Then you look at its shell with gem like patterns each having the symbol of various pokemon types. It HAS to be related to all of that somehow not unlike Necrozma and Z-crystals, or Eternatus and Dynamax.
@kaimagnus5760
@kaimagnus5760 Жыл бұрын
It also matches the appearance of the mysterious disk Pokemon in the Scarlet/Violet Book during the epilogue. Combine that with the fact it has each of the type symbols on its shell and I'm 100% sure the terrestalization phenomenon originates with that Pokemon.

The idea that a lost, troubled child becoming an oni fits really well with the mourning behind the hats, bibs, and scarves. Almost like the design of all for is meant to evoke a grief for all the children that were never given a fair shot in life, shunned as unwanted troublemakers, petty criminals, or nuisances, and masked by history. The kids that were never afforded the luxury of being kids. The kids whose faces no one cared enough to remember. The kids who had no one left to remember them. I think you're spot on with your theory and I agree that the re-examination of oni as a trope in Japanese culture that is happening right now might be a significant part of the story these pokemon character designs and trailer are telling.

There’s a few details about the DLC I noticed. For one thing, the three animals I have a dark purple item on each of them, (The dog has a scarf, the monkey, a headband, and the bird tassels.) But on each of the items Looks like the Pokémon symbol for poison type. Also, concern was mentioned in this video about them, possibly being antagonistic because of the coloring, I think that might be because they’re becoming corrupted. Pokémon scarlet and violet are all about the ideals of traditions in the past or technology in the future. And since neither one of the DLC seems to be game version specific. I am curious as to whether or not, the story of the DLC will be because the three aren’t being worshiped anymore. We saw something kind of similar in sword and shield with Calyrex. The people of the new regions village had forgotten about a D&D. Pokémon they used to worship, and thus that Pokémon had lost much of its powers. I think something similar might end up happening with the DLC Pokémon.

I'm personally not big on the 3 momotaro animal based pokemon, really just not designs I like, but it's neat to know the ideas of them all, and how it could maybe be turning traditional ideas of Oni being evil on it's head. I do like what someone else said in the comments too; With the menacing looks the trio are giving, and Ogrepon looking rather innocent in the glimpse we see behind the mask.. pushed into being the 'villain' of the old story by a bunch of bullies, but not really bad or evil, and behind the mask has built a more heroic reputation since those days. The trio may end up the antagonists because they feel their turf as the perceived 'good guys' is being encroached upon by Ogrepon's good deeds. Just speculation of course, going to be an interesting time thinking about stuff till the DLC drops.

really is quite interesting how ogerpon do's really fits with this all nicely, her being seen by some of the older people in the village as some evil monsters that the three heroes along with pecharunt but when looked deeper seeing that they were more people who where a lot more selfish and where more false heroes for lack of a batter word fitting the base of oni and other monsters like tsuchigumo where seen as presentation of the people who did not want to bend the knee or seen as outsiders, always interesting to see things like this in games. keep up the great work Goombah :). i would say Gaijin but i don't want to say great work outsider so ya, anyhow i wish you all the best i always love learning form your videos :)

What about Kamen Rider Den-O series protagonist Ryotaro Nogami’s other partner Imagin characters? There is Ryutaros, whose catchphrase is, “Mind if I defeat you? I can’t hear you!,” and Sieg, The Swan Imagin, “Advent… To the top!” Also, Yuto Sakurai, Zeronos’, contracted Imagin, Deneb, whose catchphrase is, “Let me say this to start, I am very strong,” when will he get a Pokemon equivalent?
@TheBottegaChannel
@TheBottegaChannel 7 ай бұрын
@@avoprim5028, technically if you think about it, Noivern fits Ryutaros quite well. For Seig, maybe a swan pokemon, and for ( best bird dad) Deneb, probably a regal and protective Corviknight. Sadly though, I wouldn't know about any other legendaries/ pseudo legendaries that could fit those three.

@@TheBottegaChannel Also, what about the other Imagin that transformed into Riders in the Den-O movies, like Negataros (Nega Den-O), from Den-O, And, Kiva: Climax Cop, Gaoh, from Den-O’s Summer movie, I’m Born, The Ghost Imagin, from Final Countdown, and, Eve, The Artificial Doberman Pinscher Imagin, from Cho Den-O Trilogy Episode Yellow: Treasure De End Pirates? Which Pokémon could they be the equivalents of? Also, which Pokemon could Kintaros, whose catchphrase is, “My strength has made you cry,” be an equivalent of?

@@avoprim5028, you pose some very good questions. Honestly, I got no idea. Give it a go f gr om your end. I'd love to hear your ideas for what pokemon would work for which imagin and what their catchphrases would be in the poke verse.

Something neat saw someone else notice is the symbols and their positions on Indigo Disc's shell match up with biomes in the Scarlet/Violet game world. This could be a reference to some creation myths based around the world resting on the back of a turtle or similar creature. Or maybe Game Freak simply likes Terry Pratchett's Discworld.

I'm glad to see some more Japanese mythology back into the Pokémon franchise. And also: Seeing as both the DLC kind off are set outside of Paldea, it fits. ^^ Though does that mean that these DLC are set in either Kanto; Johto; Hoenn or Sinnoh? Or maybe a new Japanese based region that we have yet to know (Imagine the DLC being the first look of gen 10!! \(OwO)/ )? ^w^)/b

Fantastic video! While I've seen plenty of others discussing the Momotaro origins, you really connected the dots to other myths I didn't know about. More importantly, your point about re-contextualizing the oni seems to me like a PERFECT concept for this generation/DLC to tackle. I've found the common thread among the main story arcs of SV to boil down to, "don't believe what you've been told - find out the truth for yourself." Just as in real life, the lore of Paldea is full of unreliable narrators because the winners control the narrative of history. As a result, our journey reveals that almost all of the powers that be are corrupt, incompetent, or, well, unreliable. Believing in myth at face value, without context of when and where and why that myth was told, can have disastrous impacts on the micro- and macro-scale. Essentially... Scarlet and Violet ask us to think critically, question authority, and seek the treasure of truth! Well, at least as much as we can, being (in game) kids. xD Also, with that layer of connection to the "oni" oppressed by the Yamato... I feel just a bit more vindicated in my theory that this is going to be in a modern-day Sinjoh, and analogous to Tohoku. Though maybe TPC will surprise us, since we can't believe everything at face value!

Speaking of, did you watch the web series Avataro Sentai Donbrothers meets Kamen Rider Den-O: Aim For It! The Don-O? I ask, because that series crosses over both shows, which is fitting, as Momotaros, from Den-O, is also based on the story of Momotaro.
