Oggun; A Tractor from Alabama with Global Applications?

Oggun (pronounced oh-goon) may be an odd name for a tractor, but that's the latest entry into the market, originally designed for Cuba, made in Alabama, and resembling the Allis Chalmers G made in the 40's and 50's. Here's a link to their website: www.thinkoggun.com/.
The Oggun Tractor is the brainchild of the partners in Cleber, LLC, Horace Clemmons and Saul Berenthal, who had previosly owned a software company together. Berenthal left Cuba at the age of 16 and always had a dream of returning and starting a business there. When relations between the two countries started to warm late in 2014, he contacted his former partner to discuss fulfilling his vision and starting a software company in Cuba. Clemmons researched the potential and found that while Cuba isn't ready for computer software, what they do need are tractors, because of their aging Russian-made fleet and their newly-privatized small farms.
The first prototype was made in 2015 and this past week Clemons completed a trek across the mid section of the country promoting the concept. I caught up with him at a demonstration in the southwest part of Missouri and he told me the Oggun story.
Cubans actually provided the name for the tractor. Clemmons told me, "As our tractor defines the transition from livestock to mechanization we described it as the Iron Horse Tractor. While working in Cuba, the Cuban farmers had an idea for a name - Oggún, the mythical god for metalworks and protector of the people. And so, our Iron Horse Tractor is called Oggún."
The tractor is designed mainly for close-in cultivation of vegetable-type crops, but there will be finish mower and rotary cutter attachments available soon. It's powered by a Honda engine, has a three point and PTO, but it's only two wheel drive, and there is no loader available for it. It will sell for $12,500, and only directly to customers, there will be no dealer network. Parts for the tractor, though, are readily available and Clemmons says the design is so simple that people with even limited mechanical abilities and tools will be able to service it.
Long term plans are for the Oggun to be built and sold throughout the world and possibly morph in to a skid loader or utility vehicle. It's a new concept, a very unique business model and it will be interesting to see if the company has hit on a magic formula to reach farmers in Cuba and around the world with their new tractor concept.

As an Agricultural Consultant I've used many different tractors on client farms or research stations and I purchased an Oggun for my own use. If you're looking for a front end loader or regular row crop tractor there are other machines that will better fit your needs. If you're looking for a precision cultivating tractor or a highly maneuverable machine for plot work or market garden farming, the Oggun may be one of your best choices. Although the Oggun takes a lot of ideas from the Allis G the two machines have a number of important differences: The Oggun is a significantly larger machine with about double the horsepower. The Oggun has a 6-spline PTO so most standard implements will work with it. The Oggun is completely hydraulic (power steering, hydraulic drive motors, mid-mount and rear 3-point arms, and a hydraulic pto), all using standard components so critical parts are available from most hydraulic suppliers rather than competing with antique tractor collectors on eBay. The tractor's systems are straight forward and easy to trouble shoot. The beefy frame welcomes modifications to be bolted or welded on so I consider the Oggun more of a 'tool system' than a simple tractor

Great video Mike. This gentleman is a true visionary, the kind of person that made this country what it is today. I bet when they are able to be imported into Cuba a lot of people and companies will want to contribute to donate one of these wonderful machines to a poor farmer there to help them, since it is so capable and well thought out. I appreciate the respect and acknowledgment given to the wonderful and still working AC-G. I like the idea and think it's going to do very well. I hope they add more tractors like this that are modern parts store builds based on successful old designs. Like the Farmall A and 140. Based on all the popularity of restoring the 9n-8n Fords I would think one like that with independent hydraulics and pto could also do well. Parts are cheap and readily available for the N series, but they're geared too high for what most small farmers want and the Sherman step down trans is too scarce for most people and the Howard 2 speed is even harder to find

Interesting looking tractor. Reminds me of the old tractors that could use mid mount cultivators, discs, etc. Glad to see the engine in the back for more weight since it's 2 wheel drive.

I just revisited this video. I see now the company is still in business, thats good. Looks like they added a roll bar and thats great. Those old Allis G were widow makers because they didn't have any protection at all. But they need a diesel option. Storage of gasoline is a real issue.

I greatly appreciate the comment, I've discovered a program that can take sound from a spring Ozark's day with a howling wind and clean it up. This gentleman is obviously extremely intelligent .... and he is making outstanding sense with his business model concept.... it makes perfect sense to me that he is working outside of Corporate Business ... another plank in his platform or root for his tree ... is the community of people who will take hold of this universal power platform and develop improvements and more implements... independently... working long hours with no cost to this company... and those components will become part of the growing list of products his company can offer at a competitive price.. even DIY folks will buy this tractor because they are driven by $ and efficiency not just "I want to build something"... the competitive pricing will hook them and the open source for repairs and upgrades will land them and close the deal. Folks that say this concept won't work are not connecting the dots .... who would ever choose to have a baby if they only considered the cost and aggravation of getting a baby out of diapers ? That's a bit of a jump in metaphors but I think it works, 😀 . Best wishes to Horace's loaves and fishes.

This is one perfect tractor for the modern homesteader on small acreage. We have looked at cub farmals an several other designs with the plows in front so you can see what you are plowing and how deep to let the plows down without covering up the plants.Do you have plows and sweeps that go with this tractor? Our channel uses different products made by different companies.Hoss tools has been one of our best hand tools so far. Our Family owns an old Tuff Bilt Tractor, which is what this is a knock off of. Its a great design and exceptionally versatile for many jobs around a small farm.

Most of the parts for conversion are off the shelf bolt-ons for the G because the engine is in the back. For the Cub, we had to create a steel structure to replace the 4 cylinder engine which ties the front end of the tractor to the rear end. That was complex, but Dave, our mechanic, was up to the task. Re power plant, considering its diminutive size, I wonder if they could power it electrically. Make batteries easily replaceable so you could recharge them with solar. I saw a video a couple years ago where a guy had refit a little allis like that and it appeared to work quite well.

This is genius. It just needs a belly mower and a higher HP engine upgrade option. I know it's not marketed as a mowing machine but seems like it would work well due to it's high, open center, tight turn radius and decent fuel efficiency.

So how has this worked out so far for this machine? What are he updates for 2022? Have efforts been made to utilize this machine in South America or Asia yet as was mentioned? ---So these used to be called the Iron Horse tractor but now they are called the Oggun tractor? You mean that the Iron Horse name will change based on whatever each market wants to call it or is the Iron Horse name to be eliminated? Doesn't this cause confusion? How would you contrast this with the Tilmor Tractor? Are there any other similar style tractors ?(rwd with rear engine and drive-train with many implements mounted in the middle). This one seems more economical and perhaps a bit smaller and lighter than the Tilmor which is just great as that would be all required in many instances. I also like the idea of simple and relatively easy and reasonable repair of the Oggun. What is the weight of this machine (without an operator of course). And what is the weight distribution. It must be over 70% of the weight on the rear wheels---even more with a 200 lb man onboard--is that right?

It sounds crazy, and a step backwards, but how about wooden fenders? The organic farmers might like the wood look, and it could still last for years and not be difficult to replace. Maybe just some steel brackets, to support wood.

The biggest difference is the Open System Manufacturing model, where all parts can be sourced locally within 50 miles of your farm rather than go back to the dealer. Oggún is also independent hydraulic wheel drive and all the latest technology.

Similar design as to the Allis Chalmers G, which is loved by vegetable growers. I've been trying to get an Allis Chalmers G but they are hard to get ahold of, glad you are making something similar. Plus I love the ease of service, just like the old Farmalls, designed to be worked on by the end consumer! Good luck I hope it works out!!

Sorely needed IF it is efficient in power to weight ratio for gas use. Can't believe they had to give up the diesel in the US but then again I can. Mike, what is the HP engine and PTO, and does it come with remotes? New tractors are junk and propitiatory in software and electronics. They are not the farmer's friend. This tractor idea is very exciting and thanks for posting Mike.

Hi Michael, the engine HP is 19 and the PTO is 17. The Oggun Tractor does not have any proprietary software, electronics or mechanical components. All components are either off the shelf, or designs are provided to customers. Our view is that if it's your tractor you should be able to fix it, adapt it or use if however you want.

Its completely hydraulic drive so it behaves like a hydrostatic. The Oggun excels at precision cultivation rather than primary tillage. Although they have a 1-bottom moldboard plow available, for plowing or disking anything larger than a garden I'd choose a larger tractor. My Oggun does fine with pair of 16" sugarbeet cultivators on the mid-mount lift arms or with a 6' wide danish tine cultivator on the rear lift arms but I wouldn't choose it for plowing more than an acre or two.

There would be a huge market for this in Australia. Lots of small acre properties with machinery being very expensive (even second hand ancient rusty things) and very little revenue from produce due to 'big business'. Lots of small acres can not afford tractors here and often rely on quads etc pulling implements which can be dangerous or 'cheap Chinese' tractors which frequently break putting up cost of maintenance. They are the people that just want to grow for local markets or for self sufficient families.

I really see africa is going to be the fastest growing ag sector in the next 15 years. But this is a neat concept coming back from the day. I have always liked the allis chalmers G, they are pretty fun to drive and offer a lot of cool features. They are rare and getting expensive these days. I think the oggun does have some good potential uses, but I am not a huge fan of the small gas motors. They just dont last like a heavier motor or a diesel. I used to work in a horse event building, we had commercial sweepers that would burn up a motor in 1200 hours, Like total failure( rod through side wall). Isnt the tier 4 emissions only horse power restricted, so if under 25 horsepower it should be ok? I mean the little gas motors are easily replaced and could probably be easily adapted to use of domesticly produced motors in other countries. But If I was buying one in USA for a vegetable farm. I would most definitely want a diesel and would pay more for it, but time you add the costs, you could buy a kioti ck 2510 gear transmission for 13500 with the deals they have now, instead of the 12500 they have for the oggun online. True any smallengine repair place would be able to service it or diy. But I also would prefer a liquid cooled motor, Because to be honest, thats what destroy these small motors in the first place. I like how they left it open to allow more air flow, but once that gets covered in dust and gunk, it will get hot quick under the load tillage puts on it. Still all in all a cool design coming back, and being a start up I wish them the best.

Great questions. While it does solve a lot of the maintenance issues with current tractors, there really aren't a lot of maintenance issues with compacts. Outside of the Tier IV stuff, and we're all still on the learning curve there, the current crop of small tractors is pretty reliable. The third world problem is pretty complex the way I see it. You generally don't have a strong dealer network to support anybody's product, so if a tractor goes down, it can sit a long time waiting on parts, so the simplicity of the Oggun means you should be able to keep it running, regardless of where you are. I know a few years ago Massey brought back what looked like a new version of the old 135 targeted for Africa, with really simple design and no bells or whistles and I have never heard a word about how it's doing. I really like Mr. Clemmons ideas...wanting to have the tractor manufactured in the country where it'll be used would be awesome, and put the source of the parts a lot closer to where they're needed. He's a bit of an idealist, and I don''t think he's in it for the money, but to help the world be a better place and I totally respect that. We need a few more of him. I like his ideas and philosophy, he's headed the right direction. It'll be very interesting to see where it all goes.

I think I looked at a massey ferguson web page a few months ago and together with some local firm they had a 135 in Kenya. Couldn't find that now but what I found now was a 35! >>>>Edit: Looked closer and the online broschure, it was this page (link below) that I had looked at so I have not seen any 135.

This guy has it the right idea....build what people need at a price that is reasonable......sell a good product that is easily able to be maintained without proprietary parts.....people are much more likely to buy something that they are sure they can get parts for even if their and your respective governments gets the shits on with each other in a few years time.....as seems to happen every time one side or the other wins a national election

Allis Chalmers was always disapointed that the model G didn't sell better. It's competitors didn't sell, either. Haven't seen much of the modern competitors to this one, so I infer they're not selling, either. Instead of the model G, I would mimick the A-C model B. Similar market, and sold well.

Long history with Tuff-Bilt, started out as Thomas-Bilt in Cummings Ga. Thomas sold the business, but not the name, to Wallace of Cummings, thus Tuff-Bilt. Wallace sold the name and business to an Alabama company, who sold the name and business to a Nebraska company, We are significantly different. The biggest difference is the Open System Manufacturing model, where all parts can be sourced locally within 50 miles of your farm rather than go back to the dealer. We are Cat 1 not 0. Oggún is also independent hydraulic wheel drive using only the latest technology from global suppliers.

I definitely see this tractor storming the market if they can get the price under $10,000 to the consumer. Around my area the $10,000+ market is just unobtainable for small or beginner farmers. like said in the video, large, cheap, 30yr old tractors are readily available. unfortunately there parts are not and repair prices high as most are worn out. Cost of operation is too high because its not efficient to use machinery like that at all Either. I believe the keeping the price under $10,000 will be what gets this tractor rolling on the American market and getting it on small farms.

Half the metal for the same price as a Branson PACKAGE DEAL that includes loader and several of the most common implements and a trailer.... It does get some more ground clearance than the small utility tractors the same power class... . Note that the price has gone up a lot since this video was made.

Mike; I noticed his cap had the eagle, globe & anchor(which is well-known to me) but he didn't mention a connection. Did that come up? Also, did you know that virtually all the reported alien abductions seem to occur near Fyffe? Seriously, I loved the video & it does scream Allis G.

Excellent idea, but we've got to do something about the name if it's going to be a commercial success in the United States. It was named for Cuba, where it couldn't succeed for political reasons (where you see "political", read "international pissing match"). In the United States, they ought to try to license an existing tractor brand name or focus on some kind of iconic name. Also, the tractor needs a hood to protect the engine. It's going to get rained into, so it needs to be protected from direct rain entry while still providing enough openness for ventilation of the air-cooled engine. A hood is just a bent piece of metal in this case.

The customers that want a hood are more than welcome to add the hood they would like. For those that can't afford the extra cost of a hood, they can park it in a barn. You'll also notice that there is no logo anywhere on this tractor - you can name it whatever you want. It's your tractor; not ours :)

Neat piece of equipment, but I don't see the US being a primary market for a few reasons. First of all, the US hobby farmer/market farmer has a love affair with the tractor front end loader. Not having a FEL is a huge no-no in today's low end market. Second, paying 12K for a tractor, and I'm assuming that price is for a bare tractor without cultivators or the chisel plow, is fine on the surface, except for that money you can get an older diesel tractor with far more grunt than that little air cooled gasser. I just checked my local dealer, and for 9k you can get a 75HP Deere with 3000 hours on it, which means you probably have another 6-7 thousand hours left in the engine, or, for 15k you can get a 160+HP Case with about 6500 hours on the clock, which will still outlast the air cooled gas engine on the Oggun. Third, the cultivator tractors like the Alis G were really good for one product in particular, tobacco. With the US tobacco market being in the crapper and most farmers turning to other cash crops the design isn't as useful as it once was. All that said I wouldn't turn you down if you gave me the key to one. It's still a fine piece of kit and should do well internationally, especially in places like the Ukraine. Not every product is a fit for every market. I would suggest adding belly mowers, both a finish mower and a shredder, as the high clearance and good turning radius would make it very useful for pasture maintenance.

We have a front end loader and a 5ft. hydraulic belly finish mower in the works. Both will available by August. Purchase price is only part of the money that comes out of the farmers pocket. Cost of ownership over 5 years can end up being greater than the purchase price. Because all parts are available locally and you can fix in the field, up-time is greater than the JD. A further note on the JD - it is not a cultivating tractor. Ours was developed for the emerging fresh to market and organic growers, which is seeing significant growth in the US today. ,"Tobacco only" nonsense....every vegetable needs some cultivation....either chemically or mechanically, I think India, Russia and other mid wage countries could benefit from this little tractor, it is a row crop, FEL is not required, in my county we have just about wore out all the Farmall A, C, 100 and 140. We need a good new replacement, a good supply of implements are a must: planters, fertilize dist, sprayer, plows, and of course cultivation.
