On the pressure sensitive buttons on the PS2, *all* of them were pressure sensitive, including the start/select buttons! I only ever saw one game make use of this though, Smugger's Run 2's map overlay would change opacity depending on how hard you held the select button. A kinda cool feature

A few questions/comments: 1 - Does it work with Xbox One controllers, like the Elite controller? 2 - You should get the XboxHDMI mod and the mClassic HDMI upscaler. Great combo. 3 - I love your channel and your content. Don't stop. 4 - You can probably use soft-modding to remove the analog button functionality on either a Global or a Per-Game basis.

Hey Matt, is been a long funny ride watching your videos, I really like your sense of humor. Something (seeing that you really like doing these types of things) that you can do on your cheapo knockoff controllers is to try to make arcade sticks with them, seeing that the console is already soft modded, you can totally access emulators and add a bit of spice to it, is not that hard and I had done that in the past myself. Still, thanks for this video! The OGXBOX scene is really goddamn wild sometimes.

Nice project! I was worried that such a device would add latency, but as your experiment demonstrated it isn't an issue. As for SMD soldering and unreliable contacts - I guess using a hot air rework station would help. If you are unsure if the part makes good contact with the pads just add flux and blast it with hot air. That's my guess at least - I don't have a hot air station myself. I really need to get one of those.

Great video. I saw this one a while back and always wanted to build one on my own for fun. I finally just finished one and am really pleased with the results. By chance I ran into a very similar problem that you had. Initially I could not get the controller to pair up with the ogx360 so I flashed the debug firmware to run the tests which gave me the error: "MAX3421 Revision invalid. Value returned: 00" Upon googling this error I found that you encountered the same thing in correspondence with Ryzee119. After reading what was discussed I was able to narrow down the issue to the IC REG not fully soldered down to the pad. After fixing that everything works great.

I dont think having to push the crap out of buttons is the fault of pressure sensitive buttons. I think its the fault of software developers not changing their code to work properly with pressure sensitive buttons. In theory you should be able to get more signal with a less sensitive press with a pressure sensitive button, assuming a binary button triggers at about the halfway point, but you need to code it to make the change at the tiniest detection, rather than just when reaching maximum value
@fmwyt95
@fmwyt95 8 ай бұрын
the problem would then be a more worn out controller potentially registering false positives (think stick drift but for buttons) You could (somewhat) fix this by making the threshold something like 64 or 128 on a 1-byte signal but then it loses the response advantage you're arguing for since each type of button would have a similar actuation point. Personally I think unless you absolutely need analog precision, digital inputs are a much better choice due to sheer reliability, plus you could make binary buttons tactile without sacrificing precision and I am a personally a huge fan of tactile inputs
@SheWhoExists
@SheWhoExists 3 жыл бұрын
If you do more work with surface mount components, I highly recommend investing in solder paste and a toaster oven to stencil the components on and reflow them. It's a lot more reliable and precise. The components also partially align themselves when you reflow the paste which is super convenient

On a tangentially related note, I was looking at an open hardware GitHub repo with "Gerbers" myself today and I had no idea what they were for, but now I know! Why I choose to still play games on an OG Xbox if I can: 1. Most of the games of that era run on DirectInput on PC, meaning that if you try to plug in your Xbox 360 controller or a Dualshock 3/4 you probably will get some conflicts in the controller because of the analog triggers. 2. I bought the OG Xbox official component cables and if you pair that with an OSSC you'll get a superb image quality. 3. You can also go for HDMI mods or plug and play HDMI cables, but I don't know about the quality of image of the latter. 4. You can have up to 16tb on one system if you mod it properly, although I do think that's a little overkill. 5. Insignia means Xbox Live 1.0 is coming back. So yeah, I'd really recommend the OG Xbox to anyone who can get it at a decent. Unfortunately, where I live it's still really expensive for a retro console, but I'd say still worth the buy if you can get it at a decent price.

The original Xbox was my first "Modern" gaming console! Previously I'd had a super beat up used PS1 when the PS2 was at it's prime...a beat up Sega Genesis when the N64 and PS1 were the IT thing...But then I had the XBOX original. It was the peak of performance in the era it existed. And I played SO MANY Games. Halo CE and 2 along with the Halo 2 multiplayer map pack. We ended up have 2 of the buggers, and would lan them together for parties! Playing Halo CE and 2 with 8 players WAS AWESOME! You know whats crazy? I have wireless third party controllers for Xbox Original! XD The quality of the 3rd party controller sucks but the wireless worked rather...well all things considering?

I found that over here in the UK at least, original xbox controllers are pretty cheap, I managed to get a official translucent blue one for £29.... I will say however, the 360 controller does help for games like Enter the matrix, because the shoulder buttons fire your weapons, instead on the white and black buttons.

Cool. I owned both Xboxs and can think the controller S is still a bit better than 360 one. For analog games its the same but the 360 dpad is notorious for being badly designed and moving around, bumping the pad wall and not activating. Really frustrating for some games. I have some later revision 360 controllers and the issue is still there. Think one has to widen the dpad socket but never tried it. The fact that wired OG controllers had huge cables and the trip breakout was also great

Aftermarket controller clones generally suck but Mad Catz made some really good ones back in the day. I had a transparent blue one for the original XBox, it was even smaller than the eventual Controller S redesign, though I got it for christmas when only the Duke was officially available. My dad wanted to play games with me on his XBox but my kid hands were too small for the Duke. Now I want a Duke for PC, but those hyperkin ones are too expensive. I don't have a soldering iron so I can't make my own adapter, and I don't even know if the unofficial drivers still work with modern operating systems.

When he said that you should never get a cheap aftermarket controller I knew I had to write this. I have a controller for xb360 that is aftermarket, and only has one thing, which may even be because it had come used with the console, the Y button was way too mushy. It is almost a perfect copy, except that the X button is closer to purple, (which I noticed when I compared it to my actual controller, included with my previous console when I got it new) and the fact it is a little lighter (Barely noticeable). It feels almost exactly as sturdy as the original one, which from what I know, is exceptionally sturdy. (How else would the original one survive a 6-7 years of being lucky if it weren't dropped at least once every 2-3 days)

Oh man those service corridors on the pillar of autumn really me messed with me and my brother the first time we played halo co-op 😂. We ended up making a deal with out Uncle that we would trade our og xbox for a ps4 and it made sense at the time cause I had a 360 and most games were backwards compatible. Man... I do miss playing on the of xbox though. Some great memories were made... (As well as some fights but uh let's look past that 🤣). I wonder when these consoles will appreciate. I too use my 360 controllers for pretty much everything, its nice when games like Forza Horizon 4 automatically maps out the controller. For NES and SNES I have a pair of them cheapo SNES USB's which work pretty well and a pair for a fiver I paid back then, bargain imho :) I stripped my controllers down last year to isopropyl away many years of mangunge buildups, thing is they worked superbly despite being quite a lot of congealed humanjuices in the crevices, I don't think you can beat an X360 controller and I did hate the OG's phat bugger a lot as it gave me strain injury on the web between thumb and forefinger.

I believe PCBWay offers a surface mount assembly option as well, which would be good for people with no soldering skills. Was this an option that was explored when making this video?

Don't feel bad bruv; my enjoyment of another old console is more embarrassing than yours despite the fact that I did not play that many games on it. I like...the N64. I even like the Star Wars-looking gray controller. The clunky N64 and the SNES are my favorite consoles that I can enjoy playing hours of games on (at least with the SNES I can also play Game Boy color games on it like Pokemon Blue). One of my favorite games, exclusive to the Xbox, was Crimson Skies despite what others might say about the game among other fun games to play on it. You're not alone.
