Back in the '30s, NJ's Two-Ton Tony Galento at 235 lb (5'9) would eat like Diamond Jim Brady which would challenge the eating habits during training of Big George Foreman. He had many unorthodox methods of fighting including not bathing so he'd stink in the ring (so said, Max Baer). Galento wasn't as heavy as Butterbean but he did not have an athletic body. But Tony's record against ranked name opponents is a little more respectable than Butterbeans. Galento's record: 112 fights, 79 wins (57 by KO), against 26 losses & 6 draws. A bum? More like a bar-room brawler. In June '39 he fought for the heavyweight championship against Joe Louis. Galento gave Joe a hard time. He staggered Joe with a left hook in the first round. In the second Louis started to show his skills by beating up Galento. Then Galento nailed Louis again with a left hook & Louis went down. Louis won later in the fight when Galento couldn't continue. But what a fight. Louis said Tony hit very hard & he had to end it. Tony fought Max Baer & Lou Nova as well. Galento held his own with some tough boxers of his day & defeated some. Tony also defeated a man known for his wrestling career, not his early single-fight boxing career -- Fred Blassie. Galento KO'd the 220 lb, Freddie, in the 2nd round. This was Freddie's first & last boxing match. Galento was basically a dirty fighter. Rabbit punches & gouging eyes. Back in the day Galento also effectively did wild self-promotion for himself. What Muhammad Ali did in the 60s. Tony ridiculed, thwarted, was aggressive with "threats" against his opponents including Louis. He was a splendid self-promoter. Butterbean has never met anyone to my knowledge ranked in the Top 10. No real name boxers other than Larry Holmes who was basically retired & older when they met. It was also Butterbean's longest fight at 10 rounds. He lost the fight to Larry but survived well. Butterbean usually fights 4 rounders. Yes, respect for Butterbean -- he has guts, loses like a gentleman, obviously loves the sport & is a likable man. Nothing to laugh at. Few laughed at Tony Galento. To me Butter Bean had one move, a vicious right. No foot work no head movement. If you like early round knock outs he is your man. Can’t go a full fight with no cardio. He is boring to me but to fight at that weight is very very impressive.
