I just brought back a bunch of small trees all around a foot tall from a campground in northern Michigan. Thought I had lost about 10 of them. I trim them back just like this and voila maybe lost two😊. The campground is extending its camping area into a new portion of the woods they let me save a bunch of little trees before they started bulldozing😊

These Acers are originally sub canopy trees, the leaves are far more delicate because of this, which is why they are being grown under shade, but also, sub canopies tend to have greater humidity and less wind, both things reduce transpiration, and so reduce water stress. So some other ways to help is to reduce wind speeds, and increase humidity.

Thank you Peter, very timely lesson in how to deal with maples in hot weather, all my maples are in a shaded structure so I have no damaged leaves, up to this point I have only had to water in the morning but if and when it becomes much hotter I will water twice along with other deciduous trees. Just a point to mention some pots can get very hot depends on the pot makeup so your idea to place in trays of water will help to keep the pots cooler even if the water is not covering the pot, it still helps, but make sure the water in the trays are not getting warm in very hot periods especially in very hot countries climates.

When I was really new to maples my Bloodgood got attacked by aphids and while I was trying to figure out that the soil dried out. It dropped every leaf and I panicked. A week later I dumped about 40/60 litres of water on the roots and watered every day after. It made a great comeback and now it’s getting big and strong.

Hi Peter sorry to hear that some of your trees dried out. I was wondering have you ever used any form of anti-transpirant to mist on the leaves of your Malpes after they have hardened off. The one I use is called Wilt Pruf and it coats the leaves so they do not need watered / dry out as much.

Hi Peter, thanks for the good instructions. Ever since i moved my ficus microcarpa outside in early May, im having trouble with burned leaves. I know its normal that they get burned while the tree is getting used to the sun, however the new growth from the past week also starts to get burned. I also moved a ficus benjamina outside at the same time, which got burned in the beginnng but after removing the burned leaves the new grwoth seems to have adopted to the sun and its looking very good know. This makes me wonder if microcarpa prefers a bit more shade while benjamina is a sunlover once properly adjusted. This is in Germany and and it hasnt been all that sunny in the past weeks.

If you wrap the plastic tightly round the moss ball - it should not dry out at all. We never have to water the moss ball once the air layering is made. We just wait for the new roots to emerge

Hi Peter, just purchased my first acer, it's not a bonsai yet since it needs a lot of training so I am looking to get wire, and then try to control it a bit by cutting some of the branches as it is so vigorous that each node has 3-6 offshoots. Since it's a young sapling still, it looks like maybe a 3-4 year old, I am unsure as to whether I should watch out for something in case I mess up, or should I go with the flow, wire it to the desired future shape and give a good ol' haircut every now and then? The climate is the same as at your nursery.

@@peterchan3100 Thank you for the response, was also wondering what size wire would be suitable for such a young tree. Amazon has 1mm,1.5mm and 2mm wire packs, but I wanted to work a bit with the trunk too since it's still somewhere malleable, and I do not know if 2mm is enough? Or maybe Amazon is not the best place to buy wire 😅. I must get plane tickets to UK and visit herons for a workshop at some point, but for now I guess I'll keep watching all of the videos!
