The brutal honesty of the Bible, as it pertains to the sinful condition we find ourselves in, turns out to be very comforting.
May you find the hope and freedom that starts with a real honest evaluation of self and ends with Jesus Christ as your deliverer!

I remember reading about a serial killer, who would do absolutely horrific things to his victims before murdering them. At the end of the article, it said (quite plain and simple) 'and three days before his death in prison, he converted to Christianity'. Jesus really challenged me then and there, because my initial instinct was disgust. How could Jesus save such a horrible person! Surely he didn't *really* become a Christian! Almost immediately, I was convicted of my own pride. How I think myself higher because I only commit little sins... but I am just as wretched as that serial killer. But praise God that He died so that I, yes even I, can be renewed! "My sin, Oh the bliss of this glorious thought! My sin, not in part, but the whole. Is nailed to His cross, and I bare it no more! Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, Oh my soul!"

This is how you know you are a child of God. It is a great sign of assurance that you are truly redeemed through the Cross. Unsaved people aren't broken over their sins. They relish in it. In fact, they celebrate it. They have no fear of God. They have no idea of the judgement that awaits them at the end of days. But we, as born-again believers, do. And through this knowledge, we can come to understand WHY we need a Savior.

Romans 7:14 and the following verses are not describing the struggle of a born again Christian or a person "in Christ." And it's deceptive to read the passage as to imply that concerning the apostle Paul. It is likewise a mistake to identify with the "wretched man" (Romans 7:24) as supposedly a new creation in Christ. The struggling wretched man is what we had all been before turning to God, but we are not still that (being called "saints" - Romans 1:7) IF we have been converted. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is *in Christ,* he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Romans 8:1-2 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are *in Christ Jesus,* who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.✷ ✷ This is the exact opposite situation to Romans 7:23, where Paul wrote, _"But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members."_ So, Paul here in Romans 7 is recounting a personal pre-conversion experience, at a time where he was still seeking a deliverance, and he did find it in Jesus (Romans 8:1-2). If it were "apostle Paul" as a born again Christian certainly who was struggling to keep himself from doing evil when he wanted to do good, then he would be in contradiction to what he had just taught the Roman believers in all of Romans 6, for instance: Romans 6:12-14 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 Neither present your members to sin as instruments of unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God, as alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For *sin will not have dominion over you. For you are not under the law, but under grace.* The apostle Paul who also said, "Imitate me as I imitate Christ" (1 Corinthians 11:1), would be a hypocrite to convey the message that going on sinning or struggling with sin and being defeated by sin is the gift of God that people who turn to Jesus find. Certainly, that would not come from following Jesus' example, because He did not sin and lived to be an example to those who would be his disciples. 1 Peter 2:21-24 21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, *leaving you an example, that you should follow his steps,* 2 who “committed no sin, nor was deceit found in his mouth.” 23 Who, when he was cursed, did not curse back. When he suffered, did not threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously; 24 who his own self bore our sins in his body on the tree, *that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness;* by whose wounds you were healed. I invite you to consider these things. Freedom from sin is what Jesus died to bless us with, all who turn to Him as disciples: John 8:31-36 31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, *“If you abide in my word, you are my disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”* 33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, *whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.* 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 Therefore *if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.* Romans 6:5-7, 15-19 5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of his death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 *knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.* 15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? Certainly not! 16 *Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?* 17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18 And *having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.* 19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness leading to holiness. Matthew 1:21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will *save his people from their sins.* Freedom from sin is God's gift of salvation in Jesus. You need to see the grace of God that way: Titus 2:11-14 11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people, 12 *instructing us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly desires, and to live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present age;* 13 looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ; 14 who gave himself for us, that he might *redeem us from all iniquity, and purify for himself a people for his own possession, zealous for good works.* If the grace of God instructs you to say 'No' to sin, then that part is up to you, and that is why the grace of God can be received in vain by someone who does not use it for what it's given for (e.g. 2 Corinthians 6:1). Peace to you! NB: This reply is addressing a major problem that causes us to have also a major disagreement on what the scriptures mean, but this is not to have a dispute with you. If this exchange takes that direction, then I won't be replying further. I wish you well.

Simeon Stylites was the first "pillar saint." He was born in Syria in 390AD. He entered monastic life but was expelled from the community because of his excessive austerities, and became a hermit. He began living on a 6ft pillar when aged about 30-32yrs, to escape the importunities of people. Later he moved to successively higher pillars until he was atop one of 50-60ft high, with a platform of about 11 square ft on top and a railing around it to prevent him from falling off. It also had a ladder so that people could bring him food. He lived on his pillar for about 37 years, dying in 459AD. He inspired many men and women to emulate and surpass his austerities. Some of them lived on their pillars for years longer than he did, but none was as famous as Simeon Stylites the Elder, as he became known.

Best explanation of Roman's 7 and the "wretched man" that I've ever heard. It finally resonated with me. I, too, have said at times, "I hate people" and "Poor me." I recall probably 7 or 8 years after coming to know Christ, I came across a little booklet titled “But How…(to perform, I find not)” based on Romans 7. I still recall where I was the moment the “lightbulb” went off in my soul and I realized, I am supposed to learn THAT I CAN’T DO IT. That all my righteousness is STILL as filthy rags. I can tell you, it was a holy moment that I will never forget. I’ve now been a Christian 53 years, and He is still teaching me the depth and beauty of His ingenious plan to live IN us, His people. BTW, for anyone interested, I highly recommend reading the biography of missionary Hudson Taylor. You will learn how he discovered this truth and what it meant as he ministered in the China Inland Mission.

According to Calvinism they no longer sin, had one say that today. We all sin, we hate it, that hate indicates we’re truly redeemed.
@yestothetruth
@yestothetruth 3 жыл бұрын
Freedom from sin is what indicates being truly redeemed. See John 8:34-36, Romans 6:14-18. 1 Peter 2:21-24, 1 John 3:6-9. The picture is not of going on sinning "in Christ." Calvinists may twist some scriptures to say on one hand that they no longer sin because everything happens "in the Spirit" (supposedly), and in other breath they will say everyone struggles with sin, so they deny the reality of overcoming sin that obeying the Gospel brings. This passage of Romans 7:14 and following verses is not describing a born again Christian. So, Calvinist or not, it is a serious error to think that the "wretched man" (Romans 7:24) is a new creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17) who is struggling with sin. And by that I mean not having victory over sin as expected for someone who got truly saved.

@@yestothetruth 100% there are a mass of phony sin, repent, sin, repent, saved in sin wretched people going around today, preaching a false and evil gospel that will commend many people too hell. They claim that their sinful nature makes them unable too stop sinning, and too repent and crucify the flesh with its passions and desires. The NIV has even replaced evil desire in romans 7 with SinNature. The kjv has also replaced it with concupiscence. Not one of the early Christians taught anything about sin nature and being unable too stop sinning. The wretched man in romans 7 is the old man, that before dying and being new in Christ couldn’t stop giving into their sins. Our father has poured out his spirit and is reviving the church from it’s miserable state that it’s in right now. Something that he would do in the end times, making the bride white again. Amen too our father that is holy and has called us not too be sinners giving into lust and struggling too not go against his word every day, but too be holy because he is holy

Frame 313 Hating that you sin has nothing with being redeemed, that feeling of regret and wrongdoing, is the Holy Spirit convicting your in your heart that, tells you too stop sinning. It’s telling you too repent and crucify your flesh with its passion and desires. Too pick up your own cross and deny yourself and follow Christ if you’re willing too be saved. It’s not you hating that you can’t stop sinning, it’s you feeling the judgment of God upon your soul, for the life you’re living and not repenting from.

As a kid, I knew why. That makes the immoral things I did as a kid WORSE. Being a hedonist of the strongest variety as a child, I did things because I wanted to with no regard for the consequences on a regular basis. Most of it was harmless ... perhaps barely a majority. Yet, I hurt a whole bunch of people with my purely hedonistic, harmful choices. I would say of those times "I did it because I wanted to."

In verse 1 of Romans 7 Paul says he is speaking to "them that know the law", probably meaning the Jews. I believe he is identifying with them, as a Jew himself, and explaining his experience before his conversion to Christ that they were experiencing. Though they knew the law was holy, just and good, but could not find the power to "perform" that law. The law cannot save us from our sinful condition. He asks, "Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?" His answer: Romans 7:25 (KJV) "I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord." Since originally there were no divisions into chapters, the beginning of Romans chapter 8 is a continuation of Romans 7. Paul explains more to his Jewish friends how they can do what that law requires - how to "perform" that law, and how to be saved from its penalty. Romans 8:2, 4 (KJV) For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Also, consider these verses from chapter 6: Romans 6:11, 14, 18, 22 (KJV) Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

Pastor Rod FYI, it's beyond Mike's (or any other content creator's) control, as the ads are posted by YT, often because they are ignorant and believe them to be similar subjects. I've also heard that orgs like the Mormons pay big bucks to have their ads posted before/after/during Christian content in order to target Christians, but I don't have any real confirmation of that.

Exactly , and how could Paul say this in Romans 8 ""For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live" 8:13, if sin is normalized because of the flesh. 7:14-25 Paul speaks from the perspective, in the shoes of when he was spiritually dead... But in Rom 6, the beginning of Rom 7, and Rom 8 Paul talks about our Born Again way of life. Rom 7:5 Paul says it was being united to the law that inspired his flesh to sin. Rom 7:14-25 is contradicts every verse before and after it - because it's a former condition! And Romans 6 directly contradicts the idea we aren't slaves to righteousness -Slaves! Where is the normalization of sin? "Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace. 15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! 16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. " Rom 7:14-25 is Paul speaking from the perspective of when his flesh was inspired to sin because of the law. Rom 7:5 makes that clear.

In this passage Paul is probably speaking in the voice of one prior to baptism. Baptism frees a person from slavery to sin. If Paul were speaking of himself how could he in other passages say "imitate me as I imitate Christ?" He can't be a miserable sinner at the same time as an example to the believers. Having said that, baptism only puts a person in a place of freedom but we are still going to have desires prompted by the body as Paul says elsewhere. So i am not speaking of sinless perfection after baptism - just a newfound freedom to say no - this is what Rom 6 teaches.

If you are constantly questioning your salvation does that mean your inning through lack of faith or that you realize how truly wretched you are? I’ve been backslidden for so long. I was saved or thought I was saved as a teenager and on fire for the Lord for about a year. Then my “mentor” for the lack of a better term moved away to college and I gradually fell back and lost track of Jesus. I’ve always felt that the scripture that talks about the seed being planted in rocky soil was me. Does anyone hVe any guidance to offer?

The Colossian church had a similar problem. A new type of teaching had crept in, which caused the Colossian believers to take their mind off Christ. Paul responded to their error by reminding them of their true foundation in Christ alone. It's good to have a mentor and someone walking alongside you in this Christian journey of ours, but a mentor can only do so much. Mentors can't save; only Jesus can. Redirect your focus back on the Savior "who holds all things together (Colossians 1:15-20). Fall on your knees immediately and call on the Lord in genuine repentance and faith. Openly confess your backsliding sins to Him as if He's right there in the room because He truly is. Ask Him for forgiveness and request a greater measure of obedience through the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells within you. Read Psalm 32 and mourn over your sin. Then wait on the Lord to bring you out of your discouragement. I love you, brother. Hold on to the Lord and His unfailing promises. Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it. 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

When I was backsliding I seriously doubted my salvation. Being in constant sin can do that to a person. My guidance is to seek the Lord, if you aren't saved,you still have time to be reconciled!! You forgot to mention the other usage of the words Law and Flesh. You are in the flesh when your service to God is Law-based (legalistic, duty-bound, unspirited). This is a pretty common way in which Paul uses the term "in the flesh".

I got into occultic stuff thinking since I was saved I could do whatever I wanted and be wicked, blasphemous, proud/arrogant, lustful and cruel. These lectures on Romans have been pretty painful. They are about what one would get at any denominational lecture. This is a good rehearsing of what one might receive in bible college but it is pretty shallow, once you get the greater meaning. The ordinary doctrines are devoid of the truth (expressed in Romans and elsewhere in the bible) that "the flesh" isn't limited to overt sin (stealing, fornicating, lying, etc.). When you go deeper, you realize that the bible is also talking about our relationship with God - in the flesh (rules based (i.e. Law)) or spirited (i.e. in the Spirit). John's gospel quotes Jesus telling the Samaritan woman at the well that the Father is seeking those who will worship Him in Spirit and in truth. When our religion becomes perfunctory then we've died on the vine. But since Baptists don't believe you can be "lost" after you're "saved" then it's okay!

at the 33 minute mark of this video mr winger gives the analogy that when a person gets saved his sinful nature is pulled off his back and set to the side so that he can yield to the spirit. this sounds wonderful, but nowhere in scripture is there anything that suggests this, in fact paul says he is a slave to his sin nature and says nothing about any relief from sin.

@@somethinggood9267 Romans 7 explained : (1.) The woman is Israel and the husband is the mediator/protector/HUSBAND , for the people ( Israel ) , in the covenant with the Father . (2.) The Israelites who refused to live by faith ( That is repenting of their sins with a sorrowful heart , like king David did ; then believing by keeping the commandments of their mediator Moses ; which he received from the Father ; which is the law of faith ) , these fell under their mediator Moses protection ; under the sin sacrifice of atonement ; which the Father gave through a priesthood , the law of animal sacrifice ; which is the law of works . (3.) So then if , while her husband Moses liveth , she be married to another man , she shall be called an adulteress ; but if her husband ( Moses ) be dead ( Hebrews 7:11-12 ) , she is free from that law ; so that she is no adulteress , though she be married to another man ( Jesus Christ ) . (4.) Wherefore , my brethren , ye also are become dead to the law ( animal sacrifice and oblations for atonement ) by the body of Christ ( repenting of your sins , and believing by obedience , the law of faith ) , even to him who is raised from the dead , that we should bring forth unto God ( 1 John 1:5-7 ) . (5.) For when we were in the flesh ( law of works , or law of animal sacrifice , or circumcision of flesh for sin through the priesthood of Leviticus ) , the motions of sins ( 1 John 3:4 , the transgression of the law of God ) , which were by the law ( Hebrews 10:1-4 , or law of animal sacrifice ) , did work in our members ( flesh ) to bring forth fruit unto death . (6.) But now we are delivered from the law ( law of works , or law of animal sacrifice ; which was also called the law of sin and death ) , that being dead wherein we were held ; that we should serve in newness of spirit ( circumcised of heart for sin ) , and not in the oldness of the letter ( law of works , or circumcision of flesh for sin , through the priests , in the book of Leviticus ) .

. (7.) What shall we say then ? Is the law ( law of animal sacrifice ) sin ( 1 John 3:4 , the transgression of the law of God ) ? God forbid . Nay , I had not known sin ( 1 John 3:4 , the transgression of the law of God ) , but by the law ( law of animal sacrifice ) : for I had not known lust , except the law ( law of animal sacrifice or the law of sin and death ) had said , Thou shalt not covet ( Romans 3:20 , Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight : for by the law is the knowledge of sin ; Hebrews 10:1-4 , " 1. For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. 2. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. 3. But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. 4. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. ) . (8.) But sin ( 1 John 3:4 , the transgressions of the law of God ) , taking occasion by the commandment ( law of animal sacrifice , or another name is ; the law of sin and death ) wrought in me all manner of concupiscence ( Romans 5:20 , " Moreover the law entered , that the offence might abound . But where sin abounded , grace did much more abound " ) . For without the law ( law of animal sacrifice , or law of sin and death ) sin ( 1 Joh 3:4 , the transgressions of the law of God ) was dead ( Romans 5:13, " For until the law ( law off animal sacrifice ) sin ( the transgression of the law of God ) was in the world ( which entered into the world when Adam transgressed against the law of God ) : but sin ( the transgression of the law of God ) is not imputed ( represents something undersirable as been done , caused or possessed by someone ) when there is no law ( law of animal sacrifice , or law of sin and death ) . What Paul is saying : Before the law of animal sacrifice was given through the mediator Moses for the sin of the flesh/body , the God of Israel required all to repent with a sorrowful heart , like king David did , through faith ; remember , grace by faith ; the priesthood of faith ( Melchisedec ) has always been available from the beginning , for the one'swho live by faith . There is no grace or mercy through the law of animal sacrifice ,and some transgressions against the laws of the Father , there were no sacrifice to protect the flesh/body ( man picking up sticks on the sabbath day ) . ( 9.) For I was alive without the law once : ( law of animal sacrifice , or schoolmaster ) but when the commandment came ( law of animal sacrifice , or law of sin and death ) , sin ( 1 John 3:4 , the transgressions of the law of God ) revived , and I died ( Ezekiel 20:24-25 , " Because they had not executed my judgments , but had despised my statutes , and had polluted my sabbaths , and their eyes were after their father's idols . Wherefore I gave them also statutes that were not good , and judgments whereby they should not live " ) . And the commandment ( circumcision of the flesh/body for sin , or the law of animal sacrifice ) which was ordained to life ( keep the earthly tabernacle or body alive ) , I found to be unto death ( law of animal sacrifice could not forgive you of the heart/spirit , or the second tabernacle , or the second death ) . ( 10.) For sin ( 1 John 3:4 ,the transgressions of the law of God ) taking occasion by the commandment ( law of animal sacrifice , or the law of sin and death ) , deceived me , and slew me ( most of Israel believed that salvation came through the law of animal sacrifice , or the law of works , or another name was the law of Moses ; because Moses was the intercessor , or husband for the people under the covenant with the Father , through the priehood of Leviticus ) . (11.) Wherefore the law ( animal sacrifice and oblations , or law of works ) is holy , and the commandments ( schoolmaster , or animal sacrifice ) holy , and just and good . ( 12.) Was then that which is good ( law of animal sacrifice or circumcision of flesh for sin ) made death unto me ( this sacrifice or atonement was for the earthly tabernacle , not th heavenly tabernacle ) ? God forbid . But sin ( 1 John 3:4 , the transgressions of the law of God ) , that it might appear sin ( 1 John 3:4 , the transgressions of the law of God ) ,working death in me by that which is good ( Hebrews 10:4 , " For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away sins " ; which the law of animal sacrifice was also called the law of sin and death . Once you transgress the laws of God , your circumcision is made uncircumcision , Romans 2:25 ) ; that sin ( 1 John 3:4 , the transgressions of the laws of God ) by thecommandment ( law of animal sacrifice ) might become exceeding sinful ( Romans 5:20 ) . ( 13.) For we know that the law ( law of animal sacrifice ) is spiritual : but I am carnal sold under sin ( 1 John 3:4 , the transgressions of the law of God ) . For that which I do I allow not :for what I would , that do I not ; but what I hate , that do I ( What Paul is saying , when he should keep the laws of God , that he do not ; when he go through the law of animal sacrifice for the atonement of sin , that he should not do ; but what he hate ( law of animal sacrifice ) , that do I . ( 14.) If then I do that which I would not ( make an atonement through the law of animal sacrifice ) , I consent unto the law ( law of animal sacrifice ) that it is good ( which was only for the atonement of the flesh/body , not the heart/spirit ) . ( 15.) Now then it is no more I that do it , but sin ( 1 John 3:4 , the transgressions of the law of God ) that dwelleth in me . For I know that in me ( that is in my flesh ) dwelleth no good thing ( the circumcision of flesh for sin ) : for to will is present with me ; but how to perform that which is good I find not . ( 16.) For the good that I would I do not ( repenting by faith , the law of Christ ) : but the evil which I would not , that I do ( atonement through the law of works , or animal sacrifice ) . ( 17.) Now if I do that I would not ( atonement through the law of animal sacrifice ) , it is no more I that do it , but sin ( 1 John 3:4 , transgressions of the law of God ) that dwelleth in me ( law of animal sacrifice could not forgive you of the sins of the heart/spirit , because it was not of faith ) . ( 18.) I find the a law ( law of animal sacrifice , or law of sin and death ) , that , when I would do good ( go through the law of animal sacrifice for the atonement ) , evil is present with me ( law of works could not free you of the sins of the heart/spirit ) . ( 19.) For I delight in the law of GOD after the inward man ( law of faith , circumcision of the heart for sin ; which means that you repent of your sins with a sorrowful heart , then believe by obeying your mediator Jesus Christ commandments ; which he received from the Father ) . ( 20.) But I see another law in my members , ( law of animal sacrifice ; which the Israel continued to use for the cleaning of the body , not for SIN ; that became unclean due to touching a dead body , etc... ) , warring against the law of the mind ( circumcision of the heart/spirit for sin , or the law of Christ , or the law of grace , or the law of liberty , or the law of righteousness , or the law of faith , etc... ) , and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin ( law of animal sacrifice , or the law of sin and death ) which is in my members . ( 21.) O wretched man that I am who shall deliever me from the body of this death ( law of animal sacrifice , or the law of sin and death ) ? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord ( circumcision of the heart for sin ) . So then with the mind ( The atonement of faith through Jesus Christ ) I myself serve the law of God (The commandments of the Father ; which includes all the covenants ; which are instructions to righteousness ) ; but with the flesh the law of sin ( the law of animal sacrifice for the cleaning of the flesh/body , when it become's unclean ) . When we use the word law , understand that the bible talks of three types of laws ( 1.) Laws of the Father ; which are his commandments/laws/instructions , that includes all the covenans thathe has given man from the beginning ( Adam ) to the end of the creation ( white ; throne judgment ; these are instructions for righteousness ( 2 Timothy 3:14-17 ) ; (2.) The law for the atonement of sin of the flesh/body , through the mediator Moses ; which was called the law of animal sacrifice and oblations through works , not of faith or the inward man ; (3.) The law for the atonement of sin of the heart/spirit , through the mediator Jesus Christ ; which was called the law of faith ; the blood of Christ through faith ; which is to repent of your sins with a sorrowful heart , then believe by keeping the commandments of your mediator Jesus Christ ; which he received from the Father . . Who was Paul ( Romans 11:1 , " I say then , Hath God cast away his people ? God forbid . For I also am an Israelite , of the seed of Abraham , of the tribe of Benjamin " ) ? Paul is an Israelite ; and the Israelites are the only nation under the laws of the Father , because they are the only nation to have made a covenant with him . The Gentiles are grafted into the covenant of Israel . Because the children of Israel were breaking his covenant without repenting by faith , like king David did ; in order to not kill their flesh/body , he gave to them through their mediator/HUSBAND , Moses , the sin atonement for the flesh , or the law of animal sacrifice and oblations , under the priesthood of Leviticus . This atonement for sin was not of faith , but of works ; which cleans the flesh/body , but not the heart/spirit . To be a Son of the Father , you must live by faith ; which is the atonement through the mediator Jesus Christ , under the priesthood of Melchisedec : repenting of your sins with a sorrowful heart , then believing by obedience ; which means to start keeping the commandments of your mediator Jesus ; which he received from the Father . Grace by faith was always available for ALL MEN ,from the beginning ( Adam ) ; the Priesthood of Melchisedec has been around since the beginning of the creation . Over the centuries , the Israelites lost their way , that is while the prophet Moses told them ( Deuteronomy 18:15-19 ) , even before they entered the land of Israel , that the LORD thy God would raise up unto them a prophet ,from the midst of thy brethren , like unto him ; And he would put in that prophet mouth all the things that the people desired at Horeb , or Mount Sinai ; Which is the ten commandments , that the God of Israel spoke to them , and all the statutes , judgments and covenants that Moses would speak to them of , because the people were afraid to hear it from God , lest we die . Paul started by saying : " I SPEAK TO THEM THAT KNOW THE LAW " ; that would be Israelites .Paul spoke to Israelites and Gentiles together , in most cities he ministered . This is an allegory of the sin sacrifice laws through the two mediators ; which Moses was the husband under the covenant between the Father and the children of Israel at Mount Sinai , and Jesus Christ became the husband of the covenant between the Father and the children of Israel , after he was resurrected , and appeared before the Father in heaven for our sins . The sin sacrifice of atonement went through the mediators , under a priesthood ( blood of the animals and oblations , through works , under the priesthood of Leviticus through Moses , and blood of Christ , through faith , underthe priesthood of Melchisedec , through Jesus Christ ) . Jesus Christ has redeemed them from their former husband Moses and the law of animal sacrifice . Most of the nation of Israel did not believe that Jesus was that atonement for sin to bless all nations , so they continued in the first atonement ( blood of the animals and oblations ) . Paul did not believe at first , he persecuted the followers of Jesus Christ , and continued in the atonement of the blood of the animal for sin ; which could only clean the flesh/body , not the heart/spirit . In this allegory , Paul is talking about three types of laws that is spoken of throughout the bible : (1.) The laws of the Father ; which are hs laws/commandments/instructions ; which includes all the covenants ; these are instructions for righteousness ; from the first commandment he gave man , to the end of the creation . (2.) The sin sacrifice law of atonement for the flesh/body , through the mediator Moses ; the law of animal sacrifice of works . (3.) The sin sacrifice law of atonement for the heart/spirit , through the mediator Jesus Christ , the blood of Christ through faith . The sin sacrifice of atonement for the flesh/body had many names ( law of animal sacrifice and oblations ,or the law of sin and death , or the law of works , of the circumcision of flesh for sin , or the schoolmaster , or the whole law , or the law of Moses , because it came through the mediator Moses , who was the protection/covering /husband , for the people ) . The sin sacrifice of atonement for the heart/spirit hadmany names ( law of faith , law of liberty , circumcision of heart/spirit for sin , law of righteousness , law of grace , or law of Christ , because itcamethrough the mediator Jesus Christ , who was the protector/covering/husband , for the people ) . Most of times in Romans 7 , Paul is talking about the law of animal sacrifice , when he say ( law ,commandment , flesh ,letter ,carnal ) . Most of the times in Rmans 7 , Paul is talking about the blood of Christ through faith , when he say ( newness of spirit , inward man , law of my mind ) . Most of the times in Romans 7 , Paul is talking about the laws of the Father , when he say ( sin , law of God ) . The apostle Peter said that some of Paul's writings and other scriptures are sometimes hard to be understood . Hope this help ? Shalom !

This is not the view of the Early Church regarding this passage, who saw this description in Romans 7 as Paul representing the position of an unregenerate Jew (his "brethren" who "know the law") as distinct from those who do not know the law. Is "sold under sin" an accurate description of someone who has been released from the bondage of sin? The Early Fathers saw this as someone who was steeped in the knowledge of what was right (the moral law) but could not fulfill the requirements and lived a defeated life, with no victory possible. This is the description of a man sowing to the flesh - a slave to sin - " a debtor to the flesh" as Paul put it .....he has no power to stop sinning. No regenerate person is a slave to sin. The Gospel doesn't only qualify you for Heaven, it equips you for victory over the flesh in this life by the power of the Holy Spirit, Who indwells you. The truth of the Life in Christ and the warfare of temptation to sin is found (of Paul's hand . . . he is not theologically schizophrenic) in 1 Corinthians 10:13 where we see our faithful God guaranteeing that we to not have to be the victim of any particular temptation but can always choose against sin. Brother Mike, I would like to hear you address why you have a different view than the original way this passage was understood in the first/second/third centuries. Bless you and your Spirit-filled ministry.

Your'e making the text too much about "you" and battles and wars, etc. The "you" that you're mentioning entered into the grave with Christ in Romans 6. It is finished. But you're allowing for the keeping of a foot out of the grave (thus living in no man's land w/it's silly battles and struggles). Paul's much broader point here is that any aspect of the old way or attitude of relying upon human effort to be right with God will lead to a wretched state. And anytime that sort of thinking arises, remember the source (every aspect of human nature) has been crucified (or circumcised) through God-empowered faith. This is the declaration the Christian has made through faith alone. Paul is NOT presenting wretchedness as a Christian option or norm. The state of wretchedness is a byproduct of the ministry of death, not the fruit & freedom of the Spirit. I'm afraid you spend vast amounts of time on many other topics when you still don't get the fullness of grace, as in, what Christ has purchased for believers at this very moment and its implications.

mr. winger is a good teacher in my opinion, but i am confused by a statement he says at the 34 min. mark of this video. "after you are saved you can walk in the spirit or the flesh, its going to be up to you". this is how bad doctrine gets introduced. the bible does not imply that a saved person has a choice to sin, or not to sin. the bible says, "God has imprisoned everyone in sin", and, "the only way to obey the law is to have no law to obey" . if you think these scriptures apply only to unsaved ppl, then try not to sin if youre saved, and see how far you get, i dont think you'll make it a day with out sinning. so, what does that mean? it means, like paul, you do what you dont want to do, and that one day Christ will deliver you from this life "dominated" by sin.

" "God has imprisoned everyone in sin" True, and that is why Christ came, to set the captives free. He HAS set us free. John 8:36 There is a warfare going on as the spirit strives against the flesh and the flesh against the spirit. Ga 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. We are now responsible to the Spirit to live after the Spiirt, if we totally follow the Spirit we will not sin. If we try to follow the law, then we will sin because 1Co 15:56b ... the strength of sin is the law. Paul was doing find until Rom 7:9. He was walking in the Spirit and then was reminded of the law and it brought him into bondage. Focus on walking in the Spirit and you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. Ga 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. So, the bible DOES promise us freedom from sinning, and the choice is ours

The bible TOTALLY clearly says that we have the choice to sin or not sin. Romans 7 does not say that we are slaves to sin. It says that sin works by the law Sin deceives (v 11) it works in the flesh. The entire point of Romans 7 is to address the problem you state. Notice that Paul identified himself as carnal in v 14. And the following verses point out the weakness of carnality to do good, it only does evil. Our carnality IS in bondage like you say. But Paul's revelation is that he realizes he is NOT carnal and the carnality at work in his mortal body is NOT him. He starts getting it figured out in v 17 17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. -* he realizes that it is sin in him that is causing the problem. But he is no longer 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. *here he identifies that the problem is in his flesh/carnal body. And that in that flesh he is unable to perform any good. He is, like you say, a prisoner of sin. 19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. *he repeates the dilema he has with his flesh, that we all do. 20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. * Again he reminds himself that the flesh nature is no longer his nature. Its power has been broken by his death with Christ. He is the new creature in Christ Jesus. That is who he IS. That is what happens at the new birth. We are given His mind, a new heart with the laws written in it (so they are now part of us) and His Spirit which always triumphs over all the works of the devil. We now are only asked to resist the devil and he will flee from us. 21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. * and we do not have to allow that law to rule us. There is a better and higher law that is also at work in us that we must rely on 22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: *that is the law that now is to govern us. There is a law that governs the old nature (which we are dead to in Christ) and there is the new law of grace and power that is able to resist the temptations of the flesh. 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. *Yes, there is a war. And it is a war that tests our faith. Do we believe God and what He says about what He has done in and for us and our victory over the works of the devil, or do we believe the feelings and desires of our carnality. We must decide who to believe. Once we do that then we walk in the Spirit and do not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. 24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? * This seems to be where you are but you have convinced yourself that there is no answer. But Paul gives the answer in the next verse 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. * Jesus Christ is the One who HAS delivered us, TOTALLY. He has equipped us with everything we need to overcome and deny every temptation. Your problem is that you are primarily serving the law of sin. Your focus needs to be to follow the law of God which means you believe and trust in all the things He has said about your freedeom and your ability to overcome. Walking in the Spirit is not about DON'T DO the bad. It is about DO good for God and His kingdom and people. Be about the business of setting captives free. Of being a blessing to others. 1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. * It is only those who walk after the Spirit who have no condemnation. The have a mind toward the Spirit and His sufficiency in all things. They disregard the weakness and desires of their flesh. The devil's only ground of victory is to keep us focused on our flesh and then to accuse us when we fall short. If you keep believing that you are in bondage to sin, then you will always be, for according to your faith be it unto you. If you believe that Christ has set you free indeed, then you will be free to not sin. You will not be free from the motions of your flesh and their desire to sin, but they now have no power over you other than to present the desire. But that desire is no longer truly born from you. It comes from the old man and you are now dead to any responsibility to obey that old man or the law given the old man. The law was given to the sons of Adam. You are no longer a son of Adam but a son of God. Jesus was tempted in all ways but did not sin. And the same overcoming Spirit that was in Him is in us. Can we sin even though we are walking in the Spirit? Yes. but here is how that works out 1Jo 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If our only desire is to please Him by loving Him and others, the flesh may blindside us into sin, and we are cleansed from that sin. If we are focues on our own whiteness in the flesh, we will never walk in the Spirit and the flesh and the law for Adam will always keep us in bondage. Christ has provided His righteousness as ours. We no longer have to strive to be righteous but the choice now is to bring our carnal desiries and actions into conformity with the Spirit. And that is what the Spirit does as we rely on Him and trust in Him and believe what He says His work in us is.

A very kind reply, thanks. A principal reason why the church and Christians are so messed up today is because: Ga 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. is taught backward - "Do not fulfill the lust of the flesh and you will be walking in the Spirit." and THAT is the surest way to bondage. The just shall live by faith. Faith in what Jesus has accomplished on the cross and is ours who have been crucified and risen with Him. We do not believe what He says we ARE. He says we ARE holy, we ARE sanctified, we ARE His righteousness. We know that in our flesh dwells no good thing, and that is why we do not rely on or listen to the flesh. There is an ongoing sanctification of the flesh where, by the Spirit, we are to bring our flesh into submission to the Spirit, but that which is born again does not and can not sin. 1 John 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. That is what Paul is explaining in Rom 7, and so few get it and spend all their time on the whiteness of their own flesh instead of ministering in the power of who they are in Christ. The spirit and flesh will always war against each other, but it is a war Jesus has won. When Christians do succumb to the flesh, why do they only repent of the action? It is never taught to repent of the real sin - we walked after the flesh instead of the Spirit and broke God's single most important commandment -- to love Him with ALL our heart, mind, strength, and soul. If we truly did that, then no sin or fleshly pleasure would be of the slightest importance to us. Christianity is actually very simple to live out - just not easy for the flesh. Love God live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God - like Jesus did cast down every thought and imagination that is not in agreement with God resist the devil - Just say "I choose God" Preachers have endless ways of telling us how to live the Christian life and we end up following rules and traditions and procedures. The only thing God requires of us is to know Him. Knowing Him brings forth everything else But it sounds like you know this stuff, but I think others may not.

The people were illogical in John Chapter 8. They were declaring that they were free, yet they were under Roman bondage. How stupid is that?

Mike, thanks for the good word. I'm not so certain your exegetical methodology aligns properly with what Paul intended to communicate to his Roman audience in their context. An aspect that didn't show up in your inductive reading.

either the flesh is weak or it isnt. Paul says he does what he doesnt want to do............why do you think that is? Paul plainly says "i am a slave to sin"...............end of argument. this idea that a christian has a choice in whether he sins , or not, is not taught in scripture. it is implied that the christian will be delivered from sin, probably when the body dies...........understand the christian is DELIVERED from sin, he does not have the ability to choose not to sin, he is too weak.

It seems to me that Paul is speaking as a non Christian since he says that he is sold under bondage to sin. Christians are not sold under bondage to sin. Yes, we sin, and we struggle with it, but we are not sold under bondage to it. Verse 14 is in the context of Paul's discussion of the principle of law and sin that is experienced by those under law. I experienced this before I believed, and it was what led me to salvation. I became aware of my self centeredness and lack of love (didn't know at the time that it was called "sin"), I hated it and myself because of it, I tried to change and couldn't, I became hopeless for change and then desperate. I cried out to the God whom I did not at that point believe in. He showed me that Jesus was real, I believed and was saved. But I experienced Paul's experience in the latter half of Romans 7 BEFORE I was saved.
