A sermon delivered by C.H. Spurgeon, Lord's Day morning January 23rd 1859.
Many of us wish we had heard this teaching when we were new to the Christian faith. Spurgeon understood the lifelong battle we all have with sin, and here he explains it to us. Romans 7 has puzzled some believers, as they think it refers to Paul's old life before he was saved. Spurgeon recognized that Paul is simply describing a conflict that every true child of God must endure, even after salvation.
How sweet it is when the preacher describes the loveliness of heaven; when we and sin shall have parted company forever!

ug that's told in millions of cultures when I lived in S Dakota they said that about 2 wolves with the Indians. totally inaccurate ignorant uneducated strawman 😢 The flesh is inherited by birth in Adams line, a lawless aberration in the absence of God's Spirit He breathed into Adam before He rebelled. We are commanded, we must be born again of the Spirit, unlike ancient Israel who was an unwise son: when the moment comes for the breach, he refuses to be born. All the prophets spoke of it. Get off corny human mysticism giving humans control. Without rebirth, regeneration and constant Mortification we all have our original sin nature til death. Our hope is the final eradication and rebirth with a new cleansed body in a world not separated from Almighty God with sin or temptation.

My brother..yes...that is what this sermon is about...listen to the last 5 min again or the whole sermon even...we are at war ahaimst the world...the flesh anddd the devil...yoi have peace only in Christ..strength only in Christ and victory only in Christ...it's the sick who need the doctor..not the healthy...so we call on the great physician of the soul to heal us in our inmer man through understamding that Christ alone is Lord...yet now we suffer and groan within ourselves longing to be clothed...so be not alarmed but put on the full armour of God and fight..fight the good fight of faith...read john owens on sin and temptation...intrusive and sinful thoughts plague all believers but submit to God resist the devil and he will flee. Since God knows the terrible consequences of the Original Sin inherited from Adam and Eve are in all their descendants, He has provided the means to overcome and conquer sins in His Only Church (One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic) for those who believe and observe what He commanded (Matt 28:20, Mark 16:16). Why struggle on your own, outside of Our Lord's Only Fold (John 10:16)? Come quickly before it is too late (for the time of the Antichrist is here now), so that you may hear His Voice, truly know and follow Him, and be saved by Him (John 10:27-28). Amen!

@@hyeminkwun9523 Yes, the solution is to know that the true convert no longer commits even one sin, contrary to R.C.C. teaching. Only the non-converts needs to repent. If salvation does not exempt from sinning after justification, you got the wrong salvation.

He's given me a new understanding of enduring and as the scriptures say the chastening i think of it as initiations as the High preist of this Temple of the Holy Ghost he has blessed me with. Do you trust the Gospel we read in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4? Hebrews 11:6, But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. Do you read anything in this Scripture that speaks of you not sinning? Read Ephesians 2:8-9 and you will see how we are saved, and how we are not saved.

This is spot on...I'm saved..but this battle..struggle...war...whatever you call it..never ends..I struggle every single day with sin..addictions..you name it...sometimes I win thru Jesus...sometimes I allow my flesh to win...it scares me to stand befor Jesus the moment this flesh fails...that instant I stand in front of Jesus is a fear I can't shake....

I have been one of Christ's own for 58 years, saved at 22, now weeks away from 80. Read Romans chapter 7 re Paul's experience. Then get into Gospel of John, slowly...& most of all, PRAY. Ask your savior to give you assurance...keep listening to Spurgeon's sermons. Do not stop seeking God and His son, Jesus Christ.. In my pilgrimage I knew I was a child of God because of these attacks by the devil. I had a battle and in my new life I found peace of God, joy in the Lord when I prayed, tried hard to stay in His word, & please try to remember Jesus says He will NEVER leave or forsake you. (Hebrews 13:8.)

@christophercriss5888 thank God for that fear! I believe that is a proper fear to have! That’s the Holy Spirits way of moving you back. We shouldn’t dwell near the caves and the dangerous pitfalls of grave sinning and the Lord would move us to safer pastures but as long as we cry out to God, he helps us and rescues us! Take heart and become more perfect in prayer. This “sinless perfection” is possibly possible but the true believer would never ever admit this in any level because he will never see it from his vantage point because in his mind it’s Christ who strengthens, it’s Christ who washes, purifies, cleanses makes our walk perfect before him. Our faith is the vehicle that moves this action. But it’s Christ Jesus who accomplishes it! A true humble believer often laments, woe is me! Often cries in solitude for his misdeeds and his waywardness. But something beautiful happens to this person. To others looking on he possesses a beautiful spirit, but he himself cannot notice it nor see it. Because he is always aware of his weaknesses and his shortcomings. But in secret, and unnoticed by him, Christ is able to do a beautiful work in his heart. “In weakness, then am I strong!”

Few preachers today preach against the evils of sin and the nature of sin. Shame on them for not declaring the whole counsel of God on this most important subject for which our Lord Jesus Christ suffered and died.

Thus, they are not on the earth, but in Christ, thus they are not just according to O.T. law, but N.T. law. Just believe the words of the apostles on this subject even though it is a fine line that keeps you searching for truth. Otherwise you will be bearing false witness. Christians are no longer in their sins to be able to sin. Listen to reason--Is. 1:18.

The Good news is that you are actually dead to sin Jesus freed you from it ! what Spurgeon is saying is incorrect because if ch 7 is talking bout the Christian man then that contradiction with roman 6 and 8 three times in roman 6 it says you are free verse 7 ,18, and 22 and near the end of seven when it says with my mind i serve the law and with the body I serve the law of sin if you go to ch 8 verse 2 Paul says that he is free form it how ? by the law of the spirit of life (holy spirit ) remember the gospel is the POWER of God to salvation for everyone who BELIEVES rom 1:16 . begun to believe that you are already died to sin and manifestation of what you believe will come to pass . Gal 5:16 freedom from see is supernatural and is what Jesus has already done for us!! all we do is believe!

@@Rileyed 1 john is talking about the Gnostics who claimed they never sin ever in there life. if you read the next verse it says if we confess our sins we our cleanse from sin .. so if Jesus took away my sin why would I still have it ? 1 john 2:1 says to not sin ,1 john 3:9 says you connot continuously sin because we are born of God. Now for what I believe a person can still step in to sin but they dont have to sin anymore why? because Jesus can keep them from sinning see Gal 5:16 Rom 6: 11-23, 8:2 Jude 24, 2 peter 1:5-10 .. to live a life of not sinning is super natural and spiritual it is Christ in us that empower us if we walk by the spirit by faith we can live a life of righteousness and holiness .Jesus is our freedom from sin not death Jesus defeated sin all we do is believe in what he's done for us.

Roman’s 7 = looking to self(bondage) Romans 8 = looking to Jesus(liberty) If we don’t sin then why is there so many warnings and even Paul saying lay aside those sins that easily beset us. The way to overcome Sin is by putting off the old man and walking in the new man. Seems you are claiming we need no longer die daily like Paul says?

@@Rileyed the die daily statement is paul facing death and on top of that Im already dead rom 6: 6 and 11 I consider myself dead to sin as the bible says to do a person can sin but dont have to your right we put on the new man which we are in christ. we are reborn again we our to renew our minds to our new identity in christ 2 cor 5 :17,21 , 3;18 Gal 2:20, 3:26 etc. we are the righteousness of God and partakers of his divine nature 1 peter 1:4 the bible says to be transformed by the renewing of our minds if we meditate on the word day and night it going to change how we see ourselves and do life col 3:1,2

Indeed, spiritual warfare is a daily battle. We need the help of the Holy Spirit in the ongoing struggle of the heart and soul. For me, the battles become even more fierce as one tries to draw closer to the Lord. The flesh wars against the spirit. But we must not be disheartened. We must never relent. We must never accept defeat. Keep short accounts with the Lord, confess frequently, repent regularly, strive to resist sinful thoughts, pride, carnal ambition, and put away the idols which beset us. Know that the lord is with you, and He will guide you through the trials and temptations ahead. Trust the Lord. Read and meditate on His word, and pray continually. God bless and keep you in His grace.

Beautiful sermon - I'm in tears. Beautiful reading also. I love this narrator's voice and inflections. He brought Spurgeon's words to life. What does the Holy Bible say about salvation? Jesus said, “Verily verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” (John 3:5) How can we be born of water and of the Spirit? Peter preached, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call” (Acts 2:38,39) The problem is, that the churches of today (Catholic and Protestant alike) do not preach this gospel, as the apostles of Jesus Christ preached it. Apostle Paul talks about the inner and outer man in Romans 7. Our battle is with our self! The inner man is Christ in you the hope of glory. The outer man is self! It’s a constant battle between the two, over time as we mature in faith the outer man dies off, as the inner man conforms to the likeness/image of Christ, Romans 8:29. God is good.

@@sonofglory7029 You are right about absolute freedom from sinning for the believer. That Rom. 7 verses says with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh, the law of sin. Many Christians so called translate it " with my flesh" instead of " with the flesh". Paul disassociates himself from the sin that takes place in the flesh. Many believer also greatly err by saying that with their spirit they do not sin, but they do with their flesh. But this is refuted by such texts as I These 5:23 and Math 6:22. Thank you bro. @@stevenwistort9903 Yes, no doubt. Math. 6:22 and I These. 5:23 prove the fact. This although our bodies as Christians are not yet redeemed like our spirit is. We are raised, but not yet resurrected in our bodies. The body is dead because of sin and does not get resurrected until the translation of the church. That is why in I Cor. 15 it says "This corruptible must put on incorruption". But that in no way means we sin in our flesh like many Christian ( so called) teachers err.

Thanks for replying. I will say, though, that verse in context is deeper to me than that. And at the end of the day, I'm procrastinating dying to myself, which God says is sin. He killed those people in the wilderness that in their hearts weren't dying (taking up their cross) like me. I just need prayer as I am still undisciplined to overcome even with His help

Christ overcame that old man within me with love. Broken and contrite is my heart when convicted of sin, yes, but he joined himself to me and is hugging and embracing that old self within me, healing me, cleansing me, forgiving me and permitting me to lay down my burden of ‘fighting’ it on my own. We all know the futility of fighting sin by ourselves. The two becoming one, first dead and buried, then risen again is what conquers that sin within me.

This is such powerful and germane teaching. I am in a battle with cancer and I am not upset with that but I have worried that I missed the mark because I struggle with sin in thought, word, and deed. I had a pastor, very erudite, tell me that Paul was unsaved in Romans 7 but I have never believed that. The reality of the old Adam is a wedge that Satan uses to cause doubt.

Way too many imperfect sinning individuals claiming no sin nature after salvation. That is a sin in itself. Look to Jesus and the Cross and resurrection.!!! 11:20 .

Brother, I love you for saying that. It's a hard thing to comprehend that type of love and grace for me and I think it's always been. It's like working out my Salvation with fear and trembling for sure until I quiet my mind and thank God for everything that has occurred in my life to draw me to the church, to Jesus. I praise His name, because I would never have pursued these things without the Spirit of God. I'm trying to say that our fears that our sins "invalidate" our Salvation are common I think, because we should fear God but don't allow the crafty one to stop your worship and repentance and study of the Word, our faith and only hope. I saved this preaching it is a more formal time but Spurgeon was a great communicator. Wouldn't that have been powerful and affirming for his congregation to hear back then. I'm old and not a good writer. I wanted to tell you that He knows your heart and hears your prayers and I'd put my life on that.

Christians don't sin anymore as they have been freed from sin by the power of Jesus Christ. 1Jn 3:6,8-9: “Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. … He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.”

Great comments below...this is precisely why peter says its hard for the "righteous" to be saved. Many of us give up in the heat of the battle...you overcome 1 or 3 sins, and yet another is not far behind, waiting to take its place...it goes on nonstop until we are deceased and go on to judgement. It gets extremely frustrating always confessing sin...while we can never be sin free, according to 1st john 1:8, we can drastically reduce it by employing the holy spirit in our battles, and staying in true confession and repentance...dont give up....
