What are your thoughts on Ohio State Buckeyes' defense?

CB needs to be better, and the DL rotation needs to be less frequent (Mike Hall & Zach Harrison need to be playing more than 20 snaps). Safties have been great. LB have been out of this world (Tommy Eichenberg may be best in the country). It's FUN to watch, which is waaaaaaay different than last year.

Astounding turnaround if you ask me 2021, we were in the middle or near the bottom as far as total defense about #60 in total . As a buckeye fan, it was hard to watch, we couldn't get off the field on 3rd downs situations. 2022, a completely, vastly different Ohio State defense and we're top 5 in almost every defensive category including #2 in total defense. Knowles really has made this defense way WAY better this year so I'm amazed and pleased so far but I know we're gonna be tested when we play better offenses down the road.

Knowles has a big training background... old school originally under Maxie Vaughn (George Allen pedigree among others)... then great split field coverage in the 4-2-5 under Chuck Driesbach (Gary Darnell's 4-2 + Gary Patterson split field coverage) ... he was head coach at Cornell, but then could really begin to think on how he'd like to develop a philsophy of slowing down power spread offenses while at Duke. Then with Gary Gibbs (who recently had influence of the the great Romeo Crennel and Bob Sutton at KC - where they were doing all kinds of disguise) at okst... I really think this cemented Knowles as a master of disguise Everyone is trying to do this now -- mix coverage with pressure --- and a lot of pattern match -- but knowles is a bit unique -- I don't see a ton of bracket and pattern match - but it's still tricky... not so dependent on executing assignments as in the others ... reminds me a bit of Venables Defensive Mind ... though more towards coverage than pressure - venables came from a pressure background - thus all the aggression... but make no mistake - Knowles is definitely considered aggressive now

Mr. Klatt, you are the only college football analyst I consistently watch. Pollard is good. Herby is very, very good. You are da' man. Now, I suggest that in addition to analyzing Knowles' schematics, we should also consider the athletes on that OSU defense. The scheme is beautiful and deadly. OSU's athletes make that scheme murderous. Yes, I am an OSU alumn, so I understand if you choose not to engage me. We OSU alumni can be obnoxious and boring.

Just goes to show how out of depth that Kerry Coombs was. It also shows how important scheme is. I love Coombs, but he had good talent, but did not put them in the right positions to succeed.
