Ohlins DFV Coilovers for Honda S2000 - Worth the Price?

We replaced the CR shocks and Swift springs on this 2006 AP2 with out-of-the-box Ohlins DFV. Possibly the most hyped suspension for the most hyped Japanese convertible. Does this combo feel like nirvana or was the car better off with its OEM+ setup?

Springs determine how much the suspension moves, the dampers determine WHEN that suspension moves. Shock tuning is about TIMING weight transfer. Soft shocks increase the speed of weight transfer, stiff shocks slow the speed of weight transfer. It gets complex because the rear rebound affects front dive, and front rebound affects rear squat, as well as having anti-roll properties. It gets even more complex when you consider that there is fast and slow speed damping, and what they do is also counter intuitive. Some times a slow damping issue can be made better or worse with a high speed damping tweak.

I'll add one a lot of people who aren't in the autocross/track world don't know about, Redshift Motorsports. He's been in the shock game a long time, and building his own for a while using BC bodies and Bilstein internals and his single adjustables are the same price as the DFV. I went from stock to his singles on 14k/11k and the ride is surprisingly good, barely harsher than stock. They ride and perform as well on track as another guys AP2 on MCS double adjustables on slightly less spring rate, just without the separate compression and rebound knobs. After having his double adjustables on our race car, and it being leaps and bounds better in handling and ride over race-valved Koni doubles we pulled off, I'm sold. Admittedly I haven't ridden in a car with Ohlins, but I have a friend who has them and I plan to back to back them soon.

Just the review I was looking for! Running a 2007 stock AP2 suspension with Michelin PS4S. So conclusion...is it worth the outlay of cash for Ohlins for a weekend street car / cruiser? The goal is greater comfort without slop...but honestly the stock suspension is really not that bad! Thanks

With the 8k rear spring you should be at 22mm of preload with the stock fork otherwise you'll be on bump stops.

We set them to 10mm and I didn't feel any unwanted behavior in the rear suspension. Damper travel felt sufficient for street/canyon driving.

Nice review! Not directly comparable, but I recently bought a 964 that came with ohlins and it’s really a bit too firm for low speed urban driving (say 30-40 mph) especially where road qualities are poor. But once you pick up speed I think that’s when the magic happens and the car just sticks to the road regardless of potholes, and car actually feels more compliant the faster you go. My perfect suspension would be low speed stock comfort and higher speed ohlins compliance, but not sure if that’s at all possible.

These are the DFV model. Unsure which shock model you have, but maybe a more track centric setup.
@rush2redline
@rush2redline 3 жыл бұрын
Zygrene is correct, Ohlins is the superior street suspension. Absolutely more comfortable and compliant. For light track and autocross use, they're plenty fast for 95% of drivers. Following the 20% rule for respringing shocks, Ohlins can be resprung to 12K/10K and so forth. I've seen 13/11 and even 14/12K set ups on factory valving. Obviously, a shock valved for a 10K/8K won't be as compliant when sprung at 14K/12K nor as capable as shocks valved specifically for 14K/12K. So what happens if you revalve your Ohlin's? They lose the rebound adjustable function and become compression adjustable only. My recommendation for a 3K budget is still valved and sprung Ohlins up to 16/13K. Even when compression only, they're still great and more compliant than comparable valved BC Racing coilovers. When we talk about sustained track use, the rear shock bodies for the S in particular are rather short. The limited oil capacity of the rear shocks can heat up and degrade performance. This is when you'll start to see external shock body reservoirs (even the stock S has them). Naturally, if you're at risk of overheating your shocks and you're pushing high spring rates at their limit, you know you need a dedicated system anyway which is why Ohlins has their track oriented TTX system. They take on the likes of MCS, JRZ, Penske, and Moton but with significantly lower nitrogen gas pressures so they need less rebuilds than the competition. For reference, I was quoted at $4900+tax for Ohlins TTX 2-way and most people aren't willing to spend that much money on a suspension unless they have a purpose.

Your example with the compression/rebound cycles after some speed bumps, clearly showcases a WRONG set up coilover. That's why you have independable compression and rebound adjustment like on a KW V3. If you set them up wrong, you'll get the mentionend cycles.

Very entertaining and thoughtful episode as usual Fenton. I'm in no position to talk anyone out of spending $ on their car, but spending time to dial in the correct spring stiffness, linear vs progressive rate, adjusting shock dampening, or simply finding the best tire pressure for the shoes it has on can have a significant effect on a car's ride and handling. Know thy car first, then throw money at it. ;o)

it does once you are already at the limit of the ride height adjustment. In this case that is the lower shock body. Any additional preload at that point effectively shortens the spring and just the starting point for your shock cycle is lower
