Portrait painting tips for beginners who want to start in oil paint.
In this short video I give you 5 tips to pay attention to. Of course there are many more.

It is my intention to publish everything I know about portrait painting.
Donations are welcome. No obligation, but if you can, please do! paintingportraittips.com/dona...
I painted this demonstration on piece of heavy duty linnen, I applied three layers
of gesso that I made a bit off-white with black and yellow ochre acrylics.
The canvas was stapled on a piece of chipboard.
Once finished I will cut the painting and glue it on a piece of plywood.
My palette from left to right.
Titanium White, Talens/Rembrandt 105
Cadmium Lemmon Yellow, Talens/Rembrandt 207
Yellow Ochre, Talens/Rembrandt 227
Cadmium Red Deep, Talens/Rembrandt 306
Terra Rosa, Winsor & Newton 635
Transparent Oxide Red, Talens/Rembrandt 378
Alizarine Crimson, Winsor & Newton 004
Chromium Oxide Green, Talens/Rembrandt 668
Viridian Green, Talens/Rembrandt 616
Cerulean Blue, Talens/Rembrandt 534
Ultramarine Blue, Talens/Rembrandt 505
Ivory Black, Talens/Rembrandt 701
Mixtures
1 Titanium White + Cadmium Red Deep + Cerulean Blue
2 Titanium White+ Terra Rosa + Yellow Ochre
3 Cadmium red Deep + Viridian Green
4 Transparent Oxide Red + Viridian Green
Later I added 3 steps of neutral grays:
Ivory Black +Yellow Ochre+Titanium White
A Mauve mixture:
Ultramarine Blue + Alizarine Crimson + Titanium White
To rinse brushes. “Titan Disolvente Sin Olor “
(This might be available in only Spain. Any odorless Spirit will do like Talens 090)
I did not use any medium in this painting

Why is the teaching of the artist excellent? I'll tell you. He's an adult, he doesn't need nerve-racking music in the background. He reduces what he wants to say. His English is clear. And he clearly has an understanding of what art and painting are. - Thank you! Greetings from Finland, Europe.

The value of these tips is actually some real wisdom. When you're a beginner it is so easy to get down on yourself and forget that painting is a constant push and pull, constant editing, being able to detect problems, which is a skill and it is not easy. I imagine I will spend the rest of my life refining those skills lol. "Every professional artist starts as an amateur" thank you Mr. Ben :)

I’ve never painted and I feel so overwhelmed and discouraged not knowing where to start or what to do at all. The few videos of yours I have watched so far have made me feel so much better, you really break it down so easily and show how the process is difficult even for pros. Thank you for sharing and I will be watching as many of your videos as possible!

Ben I gave up on myself and my art when I finished college. I found myself so stressed I began to dread the one thing that ever gave me a sense of peace and purpose. Last night I was watching landscape artist of the year and next up you tube suggested your videos which I watched with delight. You have inspired me to try again. Your gentle encouragment and simplicity of instruction is invaluable Thank you.

So nice to hear Patricia. I want you to know that I also was very stressed in the beginning. What helped me a lot was allowing myself to fail. I tried to ruin a portrait and not aiming for the highest, only to find the fun of painting. Every artist must make at least a hundred bad paintings. And we all started as an amateur.

Ben, thanks so much for this video. I’m fascinated with your portrait videos. You take the time to explain important points. Portraiture painting can be a challenge. Thank You Ben for another GREAT TUTORIAL VIDEO❣️❣️ I am really loving your videos. Thank you for teaching us all to be better artist!! God bless you for your time in these videos. When I was a senior in high school, I kept overworking this 5‘ x 5 1/2‘ painting I was doing for a senior class project and my professor said “keep it simple Vickie!! Do not overwork any painting ! Let the paint be your statement! “ I’ve never forgotten that and I apply that keep it simple rule too many things in my life and I have shared it with my children and grandchildren as they grow up. Sometimes we just get bogged down with details that we don’t need to. You pick Excellent examples especially when I watched you paint this gentleman with a beard. I have been wanting to paint my brother-in-law because he has excellent wrinkles in his face from years of working on the railroad and a beautiful head of hair and now beard also as I watch you paint the undertones I now understand why I’ve been frustrated with my work. God bless you and I’m so thankful I found you, Ben on the Internet♥️♥️

I love what you said about too many details in the end. I totally agree. I struggle to not be overly detailed. But when I study Sargent's portraits, I'm amazed at what glorious results he achieved without being overly detailed. For example - hands! The hands he painted were amazing and yet some, when you look closely, are seriously not detailed. Great tips!

Indeed. Alway I see the temptation to add more details. It is a mistake to think that a portrait with more details gets more realistic. I aim for authentic more than realistic

"You are painting a painting; not a photograph." Thank you, Ben Lustenhouwer. You remind me of Dan Dickerson at the Art Students League on 57th Street.

Thank you very much!! Your comments are always very helpful. I'm always trying to improve my shadows. It is not very easy but it the base, as you tell us. This is a video to see every time.

Thank you so much for this ! Just finding you after a day of being terribly discouraged and wondering if I can paint portraits after being a professional artist in another medium - I will check out your others videos and know that my desire is to grow in this ! Thank you!!!

Ben thank you so much. I am only at the early stage of learning but at the "go away stage" as well as making a cell phone image what I find that gets me into "viewer mode" from "just painted mode" is to take the painting to a mirror. This gives me sufficient critical distance and decoupling to see all sorts of things to improve. The brain knows it didn't paint the mirror image and allows one to become the observer. I also find the mirror useful when doing water reflections but this time twist through 90 so the horizon becomes vertical - and unintended mistakes in symmetry jump out. As I say these things work for me 😀
