Corey from IDParts.com shows you how to change your oil on a 2009-2014 Volkswagen Jetta, Golf, Sportwagen & Beetle TDI.
This procedure also largely applies to the 2012+ Passat TDI. All the steps are the same except that the oil filter design is slightly different.

Did an oil change following this video with a kit from IDParts, super simple and much cheaper than taking it in. The only issue I ran into was the bolt for the coolant line would not come off, but I was still able to access the filter even with a straight ratchet extension. Thanks for the vid and I'll definitely be ordering again in 10k miles.

I have purchased 7 or 8 (I’ve lost count) oil-change kits from IDParts for my two 2012 VW TDIs in the past 24 months that I’ve owned them. The kits are always perfect, always on time. I have bought other parts, too - including a timing-belt kit for my wife’s car (she commutes about 100 miles a day, 3 to 5 days a week, and hit 120K miles pretty quickly, so it needed a timing belt.). The parts were all there, I had no issues at all changing that timing belt - just a whole lot of time to do it, since I’d never done one before. I’m glad IDParts is continuing to sell maintenance items for these cars - I don’t plan on selling ours until the wheels fall off. I like the 40+MPG and the reliability and the fact that they’re so cheap to own. Can’t replace that at any price with any car on the market today, that’s for sure. Keep up the good work! (Oh - one more thing - I drain the oil out the pan rather than auctioning it out the top. It’s just easier for me - I have ramps and the Torx bits I need to get the bottom-plate off the car. But either way - the kits y’all sell work perfectly for an oil change.)

Wow, thanks for the nice words! We love these things, too, and we drive the wheels off (sometimes literally) and then put them back together and drive some more. Our goal is to make owning (And loving) your TDI easy so you can keep it going for a long, long time.

Great video and it helped me change the oil in my 2012 TDI Golf yesterday. The only thing I'd love for you to mention is how much to tighten the oil filter cover. I tightened it down pretty good but hopefully not too much.

The torque specification is actually printed on the oil filter cover, kevin! It is very low - only 8 or 11 ft-lbs I think.

Nice vid but two suggestions: a) check your sound equipment as not all vids seem equal, eg insome I can't hear everything; b) it would be nice to see how to do this in my driveway without special tools, ie no oil extractor or special torque wrenches. If you'd do a DIY video...love the focus on TDI and your videos are generally very helpful / interesting.

Great video, thumbs up. I read a few of the comments. I also had to use a thinner extraction tube to suction out the oil. I bought one at auto zone for $16 by Performance Tool, their grip clip transfer pump, but I had to supplement it with a 7/32" (5.5mm) vaccum tube and a 7/64" (2.8mm) vaccum tube. Anything wider in diameter than the 7/64" vacuum tube will not fit down into the oil pan. I fitted the 7/64" vacuum tube into a small piece of 7/32" vacuum tube then into the transfer pump clear tubing. I used 3 feet of 7/64" vacuum tube. It was just right. Also, you listed in the beginning the tools. A T-30 torx was listed but I found it not to work. The screws in my 2014 jetta TDi are star pattern 6 points while the torx is only 5 point. I did not have to loosen the coolant return line. I simply passed my rachet extention first and attached the 32mm socket once I passed the coolant line. Just remember to the same in reverse once you have the new filter in place. But I found this video to be the most helpful one on youtube when it came to the oil change on the TDi. Thanks.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Do NOT leave the oil too hot when extracting because the heat of the oil will cause the suction container to warp inward due to the heat softening the plastic. I think the ideal temperature of oil is between 105f to 110f. This should be "cool" enough not to cause any warping of the container.
@idparts

Ron - this is a common misconception, an "urban myth" if you will. All the top brand oil extractors (like the ones we carry) are rated for 200F fluid, so you do not need to let the engine cool down necessarily. The *real* concern isn't the extractor, but burning your hand - 180 degree oil will cause second degree burns!
@four2x4
@four2x4 7 жыл бұрын
IDParts.com... It appears then, that I purchased an inferior extracter then. Mine collapsed when extracting oil at about 160f. It works fine if I allow the oil to cool below about 130f. But, I like the hotter extraction as I believe I am getting more oil out. For me, I simply do a standard drain every 3rd or 4th cycle. Probably makes no difference but it make me feel better! Cheers...

Hi Corey. I have A 2010 Golf MK6 GTD now according to the Ryco Catalog it should take R2701P oil filter but it has the R2615P. The R2701P is only 102mm high and the R2615P is 143mm high. If I were to use the R2701P it's going to be 41mm shorter. I'm guessing being that much shorter it's going to as loose as, there's going to be a 41mm gap inside. I have tried to use a vacuum pump like the one you use but even with the smallest suction hoes I can't put it down the dipstick tube.

Great info, i can’t get the cap filter off... you mentioned that it was a plastic cover with aluminum threads... I’m afraid that my dealer might have twisted it too much... any advice?
@gocanada9749
@gocanada9749 2 жыл бұрын
How about attaching a straight metal brake line of the largest diameter that will fit down the dipstick tube to the plastic line on the pump line ? Cut off the flare on the end you send down the tube Personally I'd prefer to take out the drain plug, it's not that hard

Is this something I can do on my own? I have done oil changes before but never on a Volkswagen and I don't want to mess up my car. I would take it to the dealership but that's gonna cost me $70 or more.

Frustratingly, every year VW has a different procedure. :-( Some of them you can reset by just using the in-dash computer, some require a service tool like VCDS.

^ This. I own two 2012 VW Jettas - a Jetta Sportwagen TDI, and a Jetta Sedan TDI. Same year. Same name. Same engine. Same oil-change procedure, exactly. *Different* method of resetting the “service now” indicator for both of them!!! Seriously?! And it’s not in the manual, either.

@ck1619991
@ck1619991 7 жыл бұрын
manufacturers recommend that you do NOT prefill the filters. they prefer you to leave them dry, fill the engine with oil, and then start the motor to fill the filter. this eliminates possible contamination introduced by your prefilling.

Dale - use a filter from one of the OEM makers for VW - MANN-FILTER, Mahle, Purflux. Stick with those and you'll get 500k+ out of your TDI block.

I've got a 2010 TDI 2.0 Audi A3 with the 170 bhp common rail (CBBB series) engine and the problem I have is that my usual suction oil extractor (PELA 6000) can't get to the oil. Do you find it necessary to fit a narrower extraction tube for some VAG vehicles?
@idparts
@idparts 9 жыл бұрын
Derek GB We haven't run into this--did you attach a narrower tube in order to fix the problem, or did you just drain the oil from the bottom?
@derekgb3780
@derekgb3780 9 жыл бұрын
IDParts.com Had to do it the old fashioned way from the bottom - quite a lot of fiddling around removing 11 torx screws to remove the plastic "belly plate". PELA suggested a narrower pipe, they don't have one but said they have heard that some customers use a bicycle brake cable cover.

I prefer a sump plug drain as that gets more oil drained out in my opinion. I don't agree with priming the filter as the engine, when started, takes 2 seconds to do that and pouring the oil into the filter center defeats the point of having the filter. Oil is filtered by passing through the filter paper from the outside.

This is what happens when you let stupid people make decisions. You get oil changes like this and people demonstrating who's experience is from behind a desk. Hard pass. I'll change my oil like a normal adult. It's better for the car and, less mess, and a lot faster.
