If its a model with swirl flaps, have a look at those! Terrible things, much better to use the aluminum intake without them, for engine longevity. Also i had myself a laugh after first having a Passat TDi be dead from swirl flap failure, and then to my surprise i found out the Mitsubishi Outlander also uses a VW 2.0tdi! Sans swirl flaps, luckily!

Without a scan tool: pull off the top-left fuel hose from the cap, pull the cap off and see what is the fuel level relative to the container. Put the new filter back in and let it soak some diesel in, top it to the same level with fresh diesel, put the cap back on, if you went too high, the surplus will exit trough the cap hole, after tightening the screws in a star pattern, put the hose back on, cycle the key 2 times and it starts up like nothing happened!

I have owned a CJAA VW Golf TDI for 8 years now and you do not have to use VCDS to prime the filter housing, but it is the most efficient way to ensure all of the air is bled out of the fuel lines. Personally, I fill the housing up to a little over half way and put the filter back in slowly. This ensures that the housing is "roughly" all the way full without any overspill and you can cycle the key 2-to-3 times to get the air out and ensure that you do not run the HPFP (High Pressure Fuel Pump) dry. The biggest discrepancy on this car is arguably the HPFP. If buying a used GOLF TDI, ensure that there is no metal shavings in the fuel filter housing or clinging on the inspection screen on top of the HPFP before signing any paperwork.

@@davesnothere3425 strangely I have a 2014 and mine doesn't have an issue and I replace my fuel filter twice and I do it the same way that this guy does it.. make sure those fuel in the filter housing I even put some fuel treatment additive in the filter housing to give the injectors a good clean. And I never used vcds or any scan tool bulshit to prime the fuel system.. if you cycle the key on you can hear the fuel pump in the fuel tank running then shut off.

Yay TDI's! Not sure about the CR TDI's but you can remove the filter housing of PD TDI's, it's held on by some tabs. If you dislodge the housing from the tabs before removing the cap, you can take the housing off the car to empty it into a bottle and/or cleaning the inside of the housing. Having the housing off the car also makes it easier to fit the new filter. They're super old but more PD TDI videos please!

Great vid, I know lots of people also top up the filter housing before closing up……but I would strongly recommend not doing that if you run the HP pump dry even for seconds it’s cattle trucked, also in vcds the command can also be called ‘run transfer fuel pump’ I doubt you guys have the latest TDis (thanks to dieselgate?) but my recent TDI here in the uk where it would be cheaper to put gold in your car, doesn’t seem to run the low pressure pump unless and until the engine is running, so the ignition on/off scenario wouldn’t necessarily work.

Started as a mechanic this month, first job was this, replacing the vacuum\lift pump, and an injector on a 2.0tdi. Little did i know, they hadnt done their research, and the customer was right in thinking it ran on only 3, as it had eaten a swirl flap, absolutely ruining the valves, head and block on that cylinder. RIP!

Things have changed from the ancient days of the early 21st century when you would go to your local “diesel” seller that pushed his own mix of “bio-diesel” for 20 cents less. That was when you’d pour the dregs out of the filter. Now in these modern times you might even see a cetane rating on the pump! 😱 But seriously, Charles, nice video. Doesn’t show the bleed screw like my 06, nor the flange gasket of my 15, but a good procedure nonetheless, and truthfully these filters are not so expensive that the DIYer can change them at the 10k oil service interval. 👍👍

Do a video on that i'm curious where you would choose to put the filter.

I typically use some fresh ATF to lube the o-rings on diesel fuel filters. ATF is a bit more slippery than Diesel, so i find it's better for avoiding pinching an O-ring. Also it mixes very easily with diesel and diesel engines can basically run on the ATF anyway. So a few drops of ATF in your diesel fuel isn't going to harm anything, in fact most likely the opposite. There's lots of detergents in ATF that can help clean carbon deposits. An old farmer's trick for having an injector that isn't spraying well is to pre fill you fuel filters with ATF and run it.
@danielbrydon3869
@danielbrydon3869 2 жыл бұрын
Do NOT do that on a CR engine. Sure fire way to destroy the HPFP is mixing anything in the diesel. I've had to replace the complete fuel system of a friends audi a4 because someone accidentally misfueled it with only a few litres of petrol

Note: On PD 1.9 and 2.0tdis the process the same HOWEVER on PDs the turn of the key to prime the fuel is enough if you didnt drain the fuel out of the housing which on PDs you shouldnt otherwise you gonna sit there cranking for days. Cycling the key once before start does the trick at least in my experience.

Changing the fuel filter is a nightmare for me. Everytime I changed it, somehow air got trapped and could never start up the engine. Seems to be a common problem on this cr tdi's, I did everything by the book, pre filled the filter, primed with vcds plenty of times but it always took many tries and me ending up having to vacuum through the return line to get it working. Now the weirdest part was when I primed by vcds to bleed the air out, I removed the fuel return line to the tank to see if I could remove airlock wherever it was, I pressed the priming button and the fuel started coming from the return line to the tank instead of coming from the hpfp and it sure made a mess with diesel everywhere. So my guess is the tank fuel pump is working backwards atleast when I prime it by vcds I don't know if that's even possible but that's what happened hence why there was always an airlock. Weird that I see many videos with just cycling the ignition and it turns right away and for me it's always a pita. Mine is a 1.6 tdi with the complete fuel canister instead of just the filter and 2 fuel lines instead of 4.

Hello Charles! After I have somewhat of a confirmation from you guys I’d like to buy whatever parts this issue fixes. 2010 Golf GTI DSG I have a DQ250 that drives up until the end of 3rd gear. And won’t shift into 4th(if I try to get into 4th, either manually, auto or sports the gearbox completely disengages and basically goes to neutral whilst flashing D3 with wrench) . BUT if I put it in neutral at the end of 3rd , if I’m at speed it will skip 4th and go to D5 or D6.. is that clutch pack, synchro, or mechatronic??? No mechanics near me know anything about it, the stealership wants to just replace with new for 8,000 and I’m sure I’d be able to get whatever part it is from y’all a lot cheaper.. Thanks!

lol 5 nm, when I did mine i swear it was at like 20 ft/lb. The previous tech clearly didn't know what he was doing. After 4 broken T30 wd30, a heat gun, a punch I was able to get all of them out. I of course replaced all the fasteners.

Having changed hundreds of these filters... It is 100% normal to see some fine metal flakes. I have never changed one and not see some. The high pressure fuel pump does wear some. Especially with low sulfur diesel. Kinda the reason you change the filter.

I miss my 2010 Jetta TDI. I regret trading it for a hybrid Jetta.

I had like 1/3 of fuel left in canister and didn't realize I had to top off I cycled the car 4-5 times And it started right, is it safe to say if there was a problem with priming I would know right away ?

God i remember doing this on my Golf Mk6 1.6TDi last year. Long story short, priming through scantool did not actually prime the system. I did it multiple times but still ran the common rail dry when i went to start. I think the 1.6 Mk6s don’t have an Auxiliary pump under the bonnet, meaning the tank pump that supplied the filter housing was too weak to bleed and prime the system itself enough for the High Pressure Fuel Pump to get fed. Taking off the line from the filter to the High Pressure Fuel Pump and using the scantool until it spits diesel out did the trick for me. In hindsight, i should have thrown diesel myself into the filter housing and went from there.

The time has finally come. If you want to do more diesel stuff, my V10 TDI is up for sale! :). Mmmm, tandem pump fun to be had! Less fun, but much more reasonable Golf Alltrak will be it’s replaceable.

I've been debating doing this myself for a but. Usually have my mechanic do it. Charles, have you looked into the nicktuned CAT style spin on filter conversion?

haven't looked at that style! With zero education on it(HAHA) it seems like its solving an issue thats not an issue. Now that filer may be a finer filter, and that would be cool. but just for ease, I dont know if its worth it

Just have some diesel I a container and pour som into the housing after you put the new filter in... fill diesel all the way to the very top then you will be good when you seal it back up

Hey HumbleMechanic Need some help I Bought a 2002 VW Passate 1.8t 6 months ago. recently I went to Ottostadt get my heater core cleaned or something. so they did an inspection and now they took pictures of worn out control arm bushings that need replacing. sent me a video of the arm being moved by a crow bar and tell me the arm is supposed to go back in place you can hear creaking like rotten broken metal. also the power steering pressure hose is leaking saying it also needs replacing. Front axel boot needs replacing and Rear shocks are corroded... they are saying they would feel bad if i put the money and effort into this.. starting a new job soon and I don't know what to do
