They are still expanding the palm oil plantations. They're just just selling it to their own domestic market instead right now, they're not doing anything better for the environment. It's not double standards. Ukraine & Russia are large producers of vegetable oil, mainly sunflower oil, which is a cooking oil just like palm oil. Because of the war prices are going up. I'm so tired of people trying to blame our governments at every given opppurtinity without any real insight into the situation

I'm from a southern Indian state called Kerala. We produce tons of coconut oil and coconut oil is the staple oil we use here for everything. It used to be cheap. But from past couple of decades they export most of the high quality coconut oil and we locals have to pay the same amount they pay in other states and we get the worst quality in return. Our government does not have the balls or brains to even notice this as they are mostly uneducated old dudes. Kudos to Indonesia.

@Two Faced Person Actually most of the coconut oil gets consumed by Western region of India where most of the land is used for industrial purposes. I get coconut oil for 450 rupees a litre ( procured from Kerala) and I don't think that it's bad price. If someone in Kerala thinks that they should get the oil at the same price even after 10 years then they need too learn the concept of inflation.

Actually behind the scenes CPO companies in Indonesia are controlled by entrepreneurs from neighboring countries. When world CPO prices went up, they had neglected their obligation to meet the national quota in Indonesia so we had a big problem with the loss of all palm cooking oil from the local market. Absolutely no cooking oil for several months. Even when the world CPO price rises, they still take the price of harvested palm oil at a low price. Our farmers are not enjoying the increase in world CPO prices. Then finally it was found that there was corruption in export licensing where CPO entrepreneurs obtained export permits without fulfilling the national quota of 20% for Indonesia. This hurts all Indonesian people and even demands that the CPO companies be taken over by the government. These resources are from our land but they take all without giving to the Indonesian. As a punishment, President Joko Widodo prohibits CPO entrepreneurs from exporting until they meet Indonesia's national needs first. This penalty is lower than revoking their business license and the state taking over their company as our people’s demand. So as long as CPO entrepreneurs fulfill their obligations to the state, exports will return to normal.

This is the full story. Before Indonesia ban export for cooking oil, Indonesian government only implies "domestic market obligation (dmo)". It force company to sell 20% of their output to sell to Indonesian market. But they ignore it, many company decide to bribe some official and sell all of their output to international market because more profit. Because of that, palm oil in Indonesia rise almost double and government do their job and force all company to sell to Indonesian market to stabilise the price.

Actually only 20 percent of Indonesia's total CPO production is needed to supply domestic market. And the government has long regulated that producers have to supply their 20 percent of CPO to domestic market. But the reason why local cooking oil price gets tripled is because the CPO cartel (which many producers dominated by Singapore/Malaysian owners) blatantly disregards the government regulation. They want to export the 20 percent too, or at least sell their cooking oil to the domestic market at the same level of international price. They bribes Indonesian trade ministry's general director for foreign trade to secretly gives license for their exports. This is a big interest group. Ranging from the producers to the government officials. Moreover, that director general guy was also a commissioner at Indonesian SOE in CPO. And you know what, the SOE was almost bankrupt with billions USD of debt. Other CPO producers make money. Only government one doesn't even with hundreds of thousands hectares of palm plantations. This, i suspect that the interest group has long been trying to dismantle government control over CPO market.

@@animo_life canola would never be in par with oilpalm in terms of economy..Oil palms are by far the most efficient type of vegetable oil crop. First let’s look at why we need vegetable oil in the first place. Aside from its obvious use for cooking, vegetable oil is an important ingredient in a wide variety of products. It gives pastry its crumbly texture, it prevents ingredients from sticking together, and it helps bind cosmetics together. Around half the packaged products sold in the supermarket contain palm oil, and that’s not including other types of vegetable oil. Rival crops such as soybean, rapeseed and sunflower need as much as 6-10 times the amount of land to produce the same amount of oil. canada is bigger YES.. but you cant change where canada is located (High latitude)... then when it comes for labour cost, minimum wage in indonesia is 300$ a month...

As a Nigerian: it is interesting to note that that palm oil is NOT native to Asia. It was imported from west Africa after supplies dropped from southern Nigeria. This was due to a systematic attempts by the northern Nigeria to deprive the south of supplies during war time. Now decades of government corruption has choked the Nigerian oil palm industry out of the international market. In other words, Nigeria played itself!

in Canada, we use primarily canola oil (rapeseed), and we produce over 15-million metric tons of it a year. we don't use it all, so we're also the #1 exporter of canola oil, which easily replaces palm oil in cooking. so this ban is good for our farmers, they'll make more from their crops.

Think you might underestimate the inventiveness of these 'foreigners' since a fear of one or two nations supplying essential food products is a security concern and for that reason bioengineered algae is an alternative. Its also not seasonal. So what tends to happen here can be summed up on one sentence 'The stone age did not end due to a global shortage of stones!' In other words the world will move on and the entire palm oil industry will be forgotten.
