Very interesting video, thank you. I´m in Andalucia, so I have both almond and olive trees, amongst others. I´ve not tried carving almond yet, but using almond oil, (rub it with a nut ?) sounds a good plan. I carve olive spoons, and use olive oil, baked in an oven which will give them a lovely dark finish if left in long enough. A good burnishing is also important. I also use olive oil on leather motorcycle clothing, shoes, belts, satchels etc, and in many years it has never EVER gone rancid, even in the heat of summer, so don´t be put off -- after all there´s some olive oil in almost every kitchen.

See I wouldn't have ever thought of getting almond because it's the lightest. I have been looking for an oil to stick as close to the wood color as possible. Thank you, that was the biggest thing I learned.
@NetGhost034 жыл бұрын
If you want to stick as close to the wood color, you should try out Walnut oil. Because it does not have a yellowish color to it like linseed oil the wood will keep its color.

This really helped me. I found a wood chip that looks exactly like a T-Rex tooth, like just perfect. And i wanted to give it a finish, but a natural one. I tried this bath method and it turned out amazing! but i am wondering if i can give it an extra wax finish just to seal the deal? Thanks you, great video!

No reason why it wouldn’t but I would suggest letting them sit for a few days in a warm room once saturated to let any excess oil leach out

Hey woodcraft hamster! im wondering how long you let the spoons "dry" until you use them ? im testing some linseed and walnut oil finish on mine, letting them dry for about 1 or 2 weeks but as soon as the get their first use (mainly soup!^^) i find the oil mostly goes away (is that normal?)
@WoodcraftHamster4 жыл бұрын
Cyrille L-G it depends how much oil you are using. A light coat or two may not penetrate the whole spoon which could be your problem. I only leave them about a day between coats. I have spoons that I have used for years without recoating but the surface layer does lose some oil especially with hot food, as long as it’s penetrated the whole spoon the surface layer isn’t too much of a problem. Hope that helps. H

will olive oil work for food safe items?

No, olive oil will go rancid after a while. Mineral oil is what I use on my stuff.

@middelmadigcamping12715 жыл бұрын
As far as i can tell, Olive Oil has a tendency to stagnate in the wood. Therefore, it might not be the best to use.

Olive oil goes rancid, and I think corn oil too. So avoid for food use finishes.
@NetGhost034 жыл бұрын
No. Never use olive oil. Dunno why people recommend it often. But if you want an oil finish there are basically three good oils to use: - Linseed Oil - Walnut Oil - Tung Oil These three will harden out relatively quickly (2-6 weeks) and provide the best degree of hardness. Olive oil needs way to long to harden and will go rancid before that.
@jvanniekerk14 жыл бұрын
@@NetGhost03 thank you. Going to use linseed oil 👍😉 appreciate the advice! ✨

TheDistur not that I have found, walnut is another good one for finishing. Never tried them myself but was warned off olive and veg oils years ago due to risk of going rancid but have heard of others who have no issues with them.

@mikeyandalyssab47825 жыл бұрын
Not recommended because it can turn or go bad and leave a bad smell on the wood. Almost a rancid smell. You can get generic mineral oil at the pharmacy or walmart and it works well.
@matthewulisse91575 жыл бұрын
@@mikeyandalyssab4782 I used olive oil on a cedar wood box and it turned out fine. I didn't use a bath, I just painted the oil on with a brush, left it really thick on the cedar and let it sit about an hour. Then wiped it off really well with a paper towel. I'm curious how olive oil goes rancid but not other oils, or nut oils. because its a vegetable based oil, right? I figure you just shouldn't leave the olive oil to set on the wood too long, or it would or could go rancid. any ways, it worked this time for me. gonna see what happens with some red oak this time. oh, also, I think the fact that I live in a really dry climate might have an effect on the way the olive oil sets up on the wood.
@tawilk5 жыл бұрын
@@matthewulisse9157 there are a few oils that harden when exposed to air; linseed, walnut, poppy seed, and tung. all other oils stay wet and as they're exposed to oxygen and light they become rancid. you item will develop a sticky feel and if oiled enough, start to smell bad. it won't happen over night, but a few months from now, your pieces will go rancid.
@matthewulisse91575 жыл бұрын
@@tawilk well Im hoping its not oiled enough then. we will see what happens. Im also hoping, since Im in colorado, and its really dry here, it will be ok. Ive left cups of olive oil open in my room before, and it has completely evaporated from the container. if it goes rancid, I'll just make a better box and burn this one. Thanks for sharing the oils that harden, useful stuff to know as hobbyist wood worker. also, just a random thought, I read some where the other day that what makes the oils like olive oil go rancid is the proteins in the oil basically decaying. wonder if there's some kind of chemical reaction one could cause to remove the proteins in oils and refine it in a way, to be used properly for wood working applications. probably too much of a pain to really do for anyone, considering alternatives are cheap and easily accessible. I just enjoy knowing the way things work. peace brother
@tawilk5 жыл бұрын
@@matthewulisse9157 I wouldn't know about it evaporating enough to not be in the wood anymore. there is no protein in oil, it's 100% fat. rancidity happens because of the breaking down of the fat molecule due to oxygen, heat, and/or light. if you have an old olive oil bottle w/ a sticky film around the cork or cap, that's rancid oil. your tongue actually has tastebuds specific to identifying rancid fats. most oils come in colored bottles to help prevent issues with light.
