In the last video on this mower, we got the engine running. However, the self propel was leaking oil. The fix was to replace an oil sea.

for the seal, a generic bearing reyailer sells seals by dimensions and usually, it is less than rge half of the price of an otiginal and usually it is as good if not better than the original, very often, these equipments are thrown away for problems that are easily repairable. In over 40 years of home ownership, I never bought a new garden equipment, I always rescued equipments that have been discarted. many times, the failure was due to an elementary cause, as elementary as a shorted kill wire. very good video

Outdoor Power Repair Shop owner here, i would never discourage a repair and not fix just to sell a new mower, any honest repair shop would repair it than tell someone they need a new mower, and truthfully we don't make as much money off selling new equipment like some people think lawn mower shops do, repairs or fixing and selling used equipment is where we make more on, now if a piece of equipment is worn out and just flat out abused i will suggest to the customer that they might want to consider buying a new piece of equipment with a 2 or 3 year warranty vs sinking money into something that is not worth fixing. For replacing a seal in a Honda push mower i would charge an hour labor plus the part so around $95 compared to a new Honda mower (i am a Honda dealer) at $339 for a basic push and $579 for a self propelled steel deck model. A Good used Honda mower like in this video, i could sell with out the bagger easily for $150-200 depending on the year model. Most repairs shops only service and repair what they sell, that is big time dealers so naturally they will push to sell equipment because they choose to only service & repair what they sell, small shops like mine don't do that, i don't sell much new equipment, i have it yes (handheld products and walk behind mowers) but i'd prefer to fix someone's equipment than sell them new equipment, i believe in using something until it can not be used or repaired anymore. I always say have a certified professional do preventative maintenance twice a year and the equipment will last a lifetime.

Those Hondas are pigs to push without the drive assistance. I like your spanner wrench between the seal and the pipe solution. Great idea. The only thing I would have done in addition would be to smooth out the corrosion on the drive shaft where it contacts the lip of that seal. That's crazy amount of $$ for that seal.

Great video and repair. Unfortunately, root cause analysis says it's going to happen again as the root cause has not been addressed - the shaft is prone to picking up weed fibres that will find their way into and destroy the seal. Corrosion on the shaft will also destroy the seal. Given that my deck is corroding underneath (I blame galvanic corrosion as I wash it well and store it in a dry location after every use), I'm going to put grease into my gearbox. It's low speed, so low heat and low centrifugal force so it won't fling the grease off. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Seeing this video has shown me the failings of this system. Your video is concise, no bullsh!t, and accurate. Well done.
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE 2 жыл бұрын
the root cause was not weeds but synthetic fibers from something they ran over. I couldn't tell you what they had in their yard that has fibers like that.

It happens to alot of equipment string / fiber from who knows where wraps around a spinning shaft wether it be a drive shaft or some other spinning shaft and works its way into the seal or even bearings and cause damage to the equipment, could have been some trash blow into the yard and didn't get cleaned all the way up a little bit of that fiberis material got missed and next time the yard was mowed it got caught on the shaft and eventually took the seal out like an assassin

I would replace the seal. I actually have 2 honda hrx217 mowers I got with non functioning transmissions and that same seal leaking. They look to be harder to get to and replace. You may have been able to remove the wheel height adjuster and slipped off the seal without removing the trans on that one however. What type of oil did you use there. That trans also appears to not be a hydrostatic transmission.

What fluid do you put in a lawn mower transmission? I have a 23" self-propelled Troy bilt, and it is starting to lock up when it's pulled backward. I thought it would be the usual issue with the keyway, but on my model, it's inside the transmission.

it depends on the mower, some ask or gear oil while some ask for synthetic motor oil. I don't recall what I poured into this one. To be honest, whatever it look like, that came out of it, put the same back in.
