"cheating" Is a stupid word! I am so glad I ran into this video. I have had a few people tell me I cheat because I draw out my subject a few times before transferring it to the canvas.
@kittenmimi5326
@kittenmimi5326 4 жыл бұрын
I only use "cheating" to describe someone who say, stole and traced someone else's work and claiming originality over it so they could seem like a better artist. But aside from that context, it's a stupid thing to say to an artist.

Fernando Saint I used to draw things by starting in one spot and then drawing everything else by relative distance between "landmarks" it was effective but very time consuming and if you make a mistake early on and don't catch it ,it can throw off the whole picture so I try to sketch out the basic shapes and size before going into detail

Where the hell have you been all my life, your discourse on Art and Painting is what every person who has anxiety or an art block needs to hear. There is no limits to what we can do, art probably being one the only things we have that really doesn't need any rules or instructions, just maybe the limit of our imagination.
@theoriginallee1014

Linu Hamid thats me! Have been blocked, or rather, blocked myself due to heaviness of expectations from others and severe depression from artistically separate but personal situations. Gravitated to new medium I thought I could master, huge failure - tried to keep painting my portraits and... I set it all down and walked away. Year four now and this guy. This guy! I stumbled on his channel and felt what I thought the long dead flame of wanting to paint return. Its not about money, the almighty stressor every person in my life wouldn't shut up about. Do this, you must do this. Don't get a job, paint. Throwing your talent away. How dare you get a real job. Ect ect. Easy to see why I walked from the canvas. And now? If I pick up again I'm not even telling anyone. I love this channel. Even the music is conducive (for me) to wanting to create again. I am so thankful for the content and wisdom he gives. And yes, I held my breath when he laid down the light green over the hair. Yes, I thought shit. Why!!! But thats just it. He's provocative, he wants you to hokd your breath for even just a second. It's perfect. He's brilliant. I'm hooked. Thank you.

I STILL hear from people that an artist shouldn’t use references, that it’s cheating and we should just draw something from memory. Yeah, they get knocked down a few pegs when they try to say that ridiculousness to me.

Bee R. I'm pretty sure most artists use reference material, I think the goal is to draw inspiration from them or to get an idea of shadows and contrast and to not outright copy someone else's work, I'm sure experienced artists don't need to use reference material as much

Yes, statements on what a "real' artist is, does and doesn't do, should or shouldn't do, or what or how the artist should be creatively influenced, or what we should know (automatically?) before we draw or paint, etc., is so ridiculous and annoying and most of all presumptive (!), of people who aren't artists, as usually those are the ones who love to bestow upon us their "words-of-wisdom" and advice. Of course it's good to keep an open mind, and always be open to learning that hidden gem of enlightment someone may drop on you, but I think just learning to ignore people who are not creatives can be a good thing too. LOL (as in water off a duck, so to speak).
@pat4005

@@SincerestSawa That's a good take on it. 😊 Drawing from life is the best, then good photos can make good reference if you think of them as a jumping-off point. I always refer back to life as a reference refresher for certain things or new things, (like textures, and lighting), but as you said, as an artist gains more experience, you don't need reference material as much (depending upon what you are doing, of course). I have always loved drawing and painting people, nature and objects. (OK, just about everything), and from life first, if possible, as it's the greatest learning tool. The camera sees with one eye, but we see with two, so a camera's view is different. But the reference is great when you can't observe something in person. I love drawing and painting fantasy and tecnology too, and a recent painting of an Owlbear was built upon some refrences of different types of fur and feathers, etc., since I didn't have the luck of finding a real Owlbear to pose for me. 😉

Thank you. I've tied myself up in webs of anxiety and self-imposed "rules" of art from such a young age, that I eventually abandoned it altogether because the process made me so miserable. Your expansive, relaxed approach has made me want to pick up a paintbrush again and throw away all the complicated ideas that have been barriers for so long. I promise to tag you on instagram when I finish my first piece in probably 10 years. THANK YOU. This is therapy for creatives.

Fantastic commentary. I grew up with a love of drawing that meant I drew all the time. It became more advanced-looking than the drawing skills of my peers. Early on, the curiosity and commentary from anyone who saw me draw became either a help or a hindrance, to too strong a degree for a child. I still have strong anxiety about painting, and I soak up advice like yours here like a sponge. The advice about "rules" is great.

I am that kind of person who doesn't like or comment in any social media networks. But your tutorials videos are MAGNIFICENT and always inspire and encourage me to paint 💕 Thank you Mr. Efe .

Wonderful lesson and appreciate your theory on art from an artist. At 83 I am still trying to be perfect but restructuring is not on my menu today, and worried you were going to erase her freckles. A pleasure watching and learning from you. Stay safe……

I now understand that destroying areas of the painting is part of your art. As you are the artist and we are only the audience, this is totally up to you. And it is perfectly fine that way. Same with details or obscuring the same. Just wanted to say I really enjoyed watching that beautiful hair midway into the video, even if it didn’t make it into the final painting. Knowing it was there when now it isn’t anymore, also is a nice thought for me.

I love your commentary. :] and how you always say, "But, I digress." This painting was interesting from the moment you put color on the panel. Because the way you paint, placing the little shapes of colors next to one another is so fabulous to watch. ^-^

I love you, man! You're not a rule-breaker, you just know that you're free by default which we are!! What are we here on earth for, right? There ain't no rule book to creating, only those who were created by those who already died. And who are they to say what should be and what should not be? We're the same cells exploring the earth who wanted to have our own experiences and make each of them truly our own. So, kudos to your mindset! I have the same. And thank you that you're brave enough to refuse to be contained in a mold so we can realize we're free by default, too!
