I like the tech stuff that you have included in the video. I think its important to know not only what works well, but also why it works well with certain setups. In addition to this, especially with mechanical projects, some tech and skills can be applied to a variety of different applications and give rise to new ideas for other applications. Thanks for sharing!

You are right on the harmonic vibrations unscrewing things. I had a high revving 302 that would always back out most bolts on the block. Oil pan, headers, valve covers, water pump and a few other attached items. It was no real problem for me since I often check and re-tighten all the hardware very often. The oil pump was custom as well. The tech talk is good. Many new people get cost saving tips. I been at this for decades. A person can easy write a few thick books just on tips and tricks. Thanks for posting!

good idea welding bolt heads.....but...me being an aviation mechanic would like to offer you a tip. CHANGE YOUR BOLTS TO AVIATION GRADE, THEY COME DRILLED ACROSS THE HEADS SO YOU CAN SAFETY WIRE THEM IN TANDEM MODE TO EACH OTHER. Its a technique worth learning and applied can be a very safe and eye apealing too. look into this humble tip and hope it helps!

Use soft brass or steel safety wire, rather than aluminum alloys, monel, or copper. I mention this because you might use an aviation supply vender and have incorrect options for cylinder studs or emergency equipment.

Being a fellow motorhead I to noticed harmonics is often times overlooked and yes RPMs are the monster in waiting but with cost often times the key factor in our builds the OUTRAGEOUS cost of a Billet pump can sometimes be the Slammed door on the purchase so we keep our fingers crossed and when nobodys looking get down on our knees and say a quick prayer that our motors don't fail I bet your pump was no cheap fix for peace of mind ? GREAT Video !!!!!

@Luminaring I think once the harmonics start to play a role in the engine the pickup that is extended away from the ridged pump acts kind of like a ruler getting flicked over the side of a table, bring the ruler all the way onto the table, no more buzz.

Great to see your tech stuff....but also great to see those big out doors stuff, the flooding of the river, or the draining of your back yard when the snows melting. Part of the college education in mech eng involved the ideas & some calculations about the harmonic points in shafts, and often it was possible to chase the harmonic point beyond the normal rev range, by size of shafts & position of bearings. But if you start to hunt more power, you start to push holes in the envelope.

Tech Vids are always good to share and discuss. I would like to mention contributing factors to welded pickups not staying put. As you stated always consider the harmonics of the engine and RPM is a large part of that. But consider when these are put in 3000+ lb cars on factory engine mounts all with some sort of vibration dampening it is way more cushy of a ride. Now to me the major difference is in a tube chassis car with solid motor plates and about 3 1/2 " of suspension. Now combine that chassis car with a hint of tire shake or even just a chatter and hello cracks. Im not saying your wrong in RPM and harmonics being a large part but in my 30+ years racing the big heavy cars as stated above even with killer high rpm motors I have seen the welded pumps work for years. But I also noticed a difference when guys started stepping up to chassis cars altered's and dragsters. Some did have failures who knows why for sure it all could have been coincidence. But I guess we would all have dry sump if we could afford it HaHa

Good video, if you are worried about your bolts coming out from vibration you can drill a hole through the center and wire them together. Then even if one or more loosen up they can't come out. Be a lot easier to get it apart. That new oil pump is a good piece.
@groutaone
@groutaone 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, safety wire works well but time consuming, oil pumps with external pickups are cheap and replaced often for competition engines, weld em up in short order and good to go, toss em out on the next rebuild
@daddytech

@groutaone with mine it was just common deduction that got me there in time. i could run the thing for 30 minutes at highway speeds and it would start tapping and then over heat. I could let it sit for 5-10 minutes and it was good to go another 20 -30 minutes and then the same thing again. wasn't using or losing any coolant. no water or coolant coming out the exhaust so it was either the oil pump, plugged oil passages or worst case a worn out cam. that's the most i have done to that truck too.
@groutaone
@groutaone 13 жыл бұрын
@urmomisfineinbed Thanks for watching, if it were possible, I wonder how the oil pump would feel in a persons hand when the engine is full throttle, bet it would hurt just to hold it from the buzz
@Luminaring
@Luminaring 12 жыл бұрын
@groutaone Ya, the one piece pump's integrated pick-up is NO ruler to flop back and forth. And at one pound lighter, it will decrease vibration energy at 8K rpm compared to iron pump vibrating against those mount bolts. So, that pump seems to be the ticket to...no more bad vibs.
