Tonight's Edmonton Oilers and LA Kings game had a bit of a strange too many men penalty call - we'll talk about that, McDavid, and break down the game on today's NHL hockey video!

@@williamtell2866 I can't believe the front office hasn't tried to replace the goaltending coach, Dustin Schwartz. Of all their personnel issues, this shouldn't be that hard of a decision. The team's goaltending is part of what's holding them back, and it's been the case for years. It's quite amazing how goaltenders who have left Edmonton actually started playing better, while goalies who come to Edmonton actually start playing worse.

The problem with the Oilers is that they can't seem to do well on special teams or play well 5-on-5 in the same game. On Saturday, their PP scored twice, and they shut the Avs down on the PK. But from the second period onward, the Avs dominated them 5-on-5. And tonight, they actually played well 5-on-5, but were atrocious on special teams.

I like this. If you out your skate on the ice before the player enters the box and the ref sees it you risk a too many men. I’d be interested to see it in the AHL first to see if it makes much difference. To be honest the changes as they are now don’t usually affect play much anyway so maybe it’s just a case of fixing something that isn’t really broken. Also, there’d be issues if the puck is within the box which is where a lot of too many men occur anyway. You’d still have to be careful about the player playing the puck if the player coming off is still on the ice. Might be best to leave it and tell the Oilers fans to stop whining and just do a better job on the PK.
@drebk
@drebk Жыл бұрын
Agreed, my thoughts exactly. Works well for lacross. Just paint the box and fill it in with a color. They should also add a ring of warning track on the ice around the boards, showing where boarding calls will be made.... diff. Gripe though. The reeaaalll issue is that this rule is super subjective currently. When you dump and change, often nobody is near 5 feet when new players come on. Would be silly to see a too many men called based purely on the new box. And you can be within 5 feet and still get a very clear advantage, which should still be too many men.

I'm old school here. Each team gets 12 skates on the ice at one time. Two skates come off before two go on. But that's not the rule anymore. I get that this speeds up play, but it does cause situations like this. My solution is to paint a box around each bench. Players have to be inside that box, and the play must be outside the box, before another player can join the play. Also, the rule should include a no review clause. Let's not make this like offsides!
@brianwoods9552

Officials will often overlook too many players on the ice if the players are reasonably observing the rules. But look at the video segment again. The one key important factor you overlooked is that the PLAYER COMING OFF THE BENCH was not just the sixth skater on the ice but also THE ONE WHO PLAYED THE PUCK....that's why there's a penalty. To avoid the infraction, the player coming onto the ice needs to delay playing the puck for a second or so to indicate to the ref that he's making up for the fact that his teammate didn't make it back to the bench on time. PLAYING THE PUCK (RULE 71/74) "While a player avoids prematurely substituting, they also have to be careful to not play the puck. Playing the puck does not necessarily mean stick contact. The puck is considered to be played if it touches skates, stick or hands . Players with both skates on the ice in the process of a substitution cannot come in contact with the puck or an opposing player while the other is still on the ice. Failure to avoid this results in a minor penalty. If the puck comes into contact with a player accidentally no penalty is called."

@jamessergon if you really think changing out for another player gives you a huge tactical advantage because the player changing for you is jumping on a different area of the ice then you're really really stretching my guy You have some imagination haha My uncle who's reffed over a thousand NHL games proposes they paint a box around the bench areas to signal a "vhange zone" where you are free to field 1-2 extra players so long as they don't interfere with the play at hand, but even after that suggestion I realized that it's not a perfect system either

I feel like the reason it was called here is cuz Bouchard was winding up for a shot before the other player got off of the ice. Was this the only angle the Oilers broadcast showed of the incident? Because in LA they showed a way better angle that clearly showed that the call was correct. My wife asked the question many times, "Why don't they paint a line near the benches so that they know when it's 5 feet?" I shrug and say, "I don't know." I just can't say, "Because that's intelligent and asking the Gary Bettman NHL to do something intelligent is asking for too much."

I don’t think the call would have been made if the puck was not going to the area of that line change. I think it was called because of the 5’ rule and because he was gonna have to play the puck to keep it on side.

They need to put up a player change box lines on the ice so there is no doubt if you are in the lines you can change if not to many men

Skinners 2nd pull I believe. He got pulled a few games ago. He is supposed to be having his first baby tomorrow. He shouldn’t have been playing tonight.

If this isn’t proof that the nhl is bending the games so that certain teams win, then I don’t know what is??? Like seriously!!! These refs are just so awful that I don’t even want to watch the games anymore, because I know that they’re just gonna keep calling bad penalties to the Oilers!!! 😤😤😤😡😡😡

Easy solution here is to have a zone line painted around the benches, like a crease. But this isn't the Oiler's problem. They rely on two guys to carry the team, that's the problem.

Not much is being called consistently this season. The NHL needs to get the sh!t together and lay down the law with the refs. Tell them what is expected and what is not for calls. Teams will never know what kind of game they are going to have which leads to confusion and inconsistent play and games. It sucks as a fan, but it sucks worse for the players and team.

🤣🤣🤣that was a good game for a Red Hot Kings team. I can see the Oilers took their frustrations from this game out of the Ducks. I'll take that Pi King Duck special as a Kings fan.

It's frustrating when 70 times a game this happens and is routine... but rules are rules and 5 feet are in the rules. Still sucks though.

Oilers fan here, we didn't play a game worth winning, bad call yup sure, I could count three or four this game a team. This year has been terrible for calls. We need to play a better game to get a W

We have blue lines and red circles, why not green zones for the benches? Make it easy for the players to see, easy for the refs to review, and easy for broadcasts to analyze. Seems like a recurring problem with a simple solution.

It’s frustrating only because there is zero consistency in being able to judge that. One will call 5 feet. One will call 6 feet. One will call 4 feet. I’m annoyed just thinking about it. They should change it to a more discernible action rather than a distance.
