@zach w NGL wasn't overly impressed with their last few albums. There were some hints of the old magic on the last 2 (spit out the bone, atlas rise, a couple other tracks too). Nothing of value at all on St. Anger, and the less said about Lulu, the better. Still a great band though, all things considered.
@andyb16534 жыл бұрын
@zach w Fair enough, but I was so heartbroken by St. Anger. I'd gone through High School listening to everything from KEA to ReLoad, and was so hyped for a new album, then it was no better (imo) than the butt rock of the era. Not a single guitar solo? Then there was the drums..... BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM CLANG BAM THUD BAM BAM BAM CLANK CLANK BAM THUD (cat scream) BAM BAM (shattering glass) BAM DINK BAM

This is very true...Like The song Nightfall By The Shore Of Time - Dark Tranquillity ^^ That whole album is great! A communion of life and eternity, of Races scattered in the depths of the universal dark Above us minds went sailing free and blossomed in the vast nocturnal sea Paragon of beauty, Oh, spark of Creation; We march to the rhythm of the Night Starborn flew the Dove of Man in the eventide of life, whose wonders crowned our yesterdays with light Fire - Earth - Water - Wind We lived beneath the waning moon of truth And danced in hunger for the Powermind (of Youth) Like the dark to a dying Flame; Sweepingly embracing its grieving remains Defiantly blazing the black that awaits Counting the days 'til the new Age awaits Times' lustful cyclones arise, Piercing the fairest of Skies In elysian awakening of spiritual glory we see what our history belies Meadows of Asphodel Burning in the hunted dawn Tragedies die among fiery flames as the firewood of Wisdom is sawn Our Guardians were blind My lightbringer ephemeral Within the heart of all; A cold and dusky melancholy night, as ever sullied the fair face of light Whose seeds of life they grind To dust, of vapour is our mind ...evermore Paragon of beauty, Oh, spark of Creation; We march to the rhythm of the Night Nightfall by the shore of time, a tidal wave of fire and woe Swept away with the last of life the core of the enigma as bestowed Our crystal spirits melt to flow the mountainside along To join as one with seas of old in symbiotic songs: "Communion... Within the Oversoul of the Universe" We are but fragment of Eternity, pale shadows of what we'll once be In life's outer regions I will find the foremost Tranquility Chanting the odes of Magonia A soulstream in flight to the Otherworld ...to the Otherworld "

Honestly I'm impressed you figured out the story so fast without watching the official video. Well done. You were absolutely right. This song is inspired by the movie/book called Johnny Got His Gun, about a young man who joins the army, goes to war, gets blown up, losses sight, hearing, etc, and essentially becomes trapped inside his own body with no way of communicating with the doctors and nurses in the hospital. He ends up using Morse code, which he learned in the army, to tell them he wants to die.
@chrisstewart7704 жыл бұрын
My man. Keep in mind the tempo is attuned to the soldiers mood and anger. In the beginning, the song is more laid back. Later in the song he's more angry about his situation, so the tempo is more aggressive. Just one more reason Metallica is BRILLIANT.

I have probably watched hundreds of first time reactions to songs i've cherished for 15,20,30+ years and so far you're 3/3 for figuring out the meaning of a song. It's another thing to watch someone come up to speed with my own understanding of a song after living it for 20 years. Good job man
@TheDarkwater784 жыл бұрын
It's good to see that someone who is reacting to a song takes the time to really think about the lyrics. I even saw two girls reacting on "One" and dancing to the catchy groove. Thank you for making up your mind to the deep lyrics which cover topics like war on an emotional level out of a victim's perspective. You will learn that many Metal bands put a lot of thought and empathy into their lyrics. Keep going on like this - it was a great thing to experience that song again through your eyes. :-)

Johnny Got His Gun was fiction inspired by a gruesome true story about a Canadian soldier from World War I. During battle, a mortar shell hits very close to "Johnny" Joe Bonham, causing severe physical damage. ... During the second half of the story, Joe becomes more optimistic and wills himself to accomplish what he can. It became a movie “ Johnny Get Your Gun” War has plunged Army soldier Joe Bonham (Timothy Bottoms) into an unending nightmare. Hit by an artillery shell in World War I, Joe has suffered injuries that have all but erased his humanity: he's lost his sight, speech, hearing and sense of smell. But he still has the ability to think and remember, which, in the end, may be more a curse than a blessing. Trapped in his body, Joe realizes there's only one way out of his misery: death. Can he get a sympathetic nurse to help him? Hes in a hospital bed...He’s paralyzed, blind, mute..basically trapped inside his body. The book was banned! The movie is all head talk. A must watch! Metallica is fucking genius!

I’ve watched several reactions to this song over the past several hours and you’ve gotten closest to completely grasping the story within the lyrics. Damn near hit it square on the head. My deep respect man. To fill in the gaps for you, the song is based on a movie - Johnny got a gun. It was, itself, based on a book of similar title which was, itself based on a real life event. In WW1 a US soldier was caught right in the center of an explosion. I’ve heard land mine and I’ve heard mortar shell, which is what the movie seems to portray. The explosion blew off his arms and legs. It’s also pretty well blew or burned his face off as well leaving him blind, deaf, and unable to speak. Surgeons were able, in what was considered a miracle of modern medicine at that time, to save his life. But in his condition he was trapped within his own mind and relatively modern experiments have demonstrated what a person undergoing sensory deprivation (lack of all senses or contact with the world outside our mind) experiences. When the mind has no sensory input for an extended period, it will begin to make up fake input and the person hallucinate...and those can be really horrible. Think like a really bad trip. The disabled soldier was observed to be continually regularly bobbing his head in some kind of a pattern. A visiting officer realized it was Morse code and that the invalid soldier was signaling “SOS. kill me.” Over and over. Because of the medical experiment he represented, the doctors and military command were unwilling to relieve his suffering by pulling the plug and letting him die; but a nurse in his medical ward took pity on him and, when alone with him, cut his airflow. Probably game him an overdose of morphine as well to ease his passing. Hard to think of a much more disturbing thing than this.
@christopherhughes82294 жыл бұрын
You should now react to the music video. It has clips from the movie "Johnnie got his gun" that gives a lot more visual for the song. Great that you're getting into rock and metal. As a total left field play...try reacting to Meatloaf "Bat out of Hell" or anything else of his.

This song is my worst nightmare. When I picture him laying there, kept alive by a machine, wanting to die, I always break a little inside. Good reaction!

This one of Metallica's true masterpieces. "Fade to Black" my other favorite. I recommend you do that one next. You won't be disappointed!

This is the most impressed I've been with any reaction. Not just yours, ANY KZfaq reaction.You nailed it without seeing the official video. Everyone else fucks it up.The movie "Johnny got his gun" is what it's inspired by. Much respect.

Fantastic! 100% correct! The movie they used for the video shows a father who runs a freak show telling his son that any man would give his only son for Country. He doesn't know it, but the armless, legless wonder is his own son!!

I read the book then watched the movie when I was a teenager, the only thing they changed in the song was that it wasn't a landmine, it was a mortar and he was in a foxhole. Best Reaction I've seen so far, you nailed it, dude. If you want to see the movie "Johnny Got His Gun" (1971). kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7uWdbl9pr_DoIk.html

Finally someone who reacts to the non-music video of ONE! ...no distracting movie clips, or audio samples. Just good old pure METAL, without distractions. You didn't pause the solos, and you figured out the lyrics just when you were meant to. An awesome reaction!

I listen to Metallica since I was a little kid, learned to play guitar with them and other bands and this song was one of my favorites. I don't listen to it anymore right after my first mobilization.

I appreciate someone pulling a story from a song, songs like this are great for it. Honestly, I think u may benefit from doing a little research on metal songs for the future. The video from this song is great for inspiring conversation with friends. U'll find this is true for most metal, a big part was delving into the insert & reading all the lyrics even before listened to the music. Guy, u need to watch the video that goes with this song. Enjoy.

Yeah, it would be perfect if he watches the music clip after actually understanding what the song means - makes it so much more horrifying.

Now that he has heard the song first. When they play the movie over the song in the video, if you dont know the song already, you miss a lot of the music.

Forced my classroom to watch this video because a kid wore a Metallica shirt and didn't know a song. They learned who METALLICA was that day...3 years later at the gym, that same student came up to me and told me.."Thank you for putting that song and video for me." You're welcome world.
