My grandfather William was in WWII. He was a mail carrier and drove to different camp sites to deliver mail. He drove over a land mine and half his leg was shredded up. He survived. When he came back home, he went through many surgeries but insisted the doctor not to amputate his leg. My grandmother took care of him for many years until he died at the age of 74. It was rough on my grandmother who loved him dearly, we all did! He was the sweetest and strongest man I ever knew. I have his platoon picture and certificate hanging on my wall. Thank you Grandpa for fighting for our country 🇨🇦 Lest we forget 🌺

Same here, my grandfather was on Saipan during WWII and was a flight mechanic, but because of his small frame, he was pulled for tunnel rat duty...and on the day they found the underground Japanese comms post, a new gung-ho officer took point and immediately got peppered with gunfire when they entered the bunker...my grandfather was shot but survived to age 79 to pass his knowledge on to his kids and me, his grand-kid...and as long as I live, I will try to never forget what he taught me of the horrors of war and how we should never engage in it, except as an absolute last resort...and even then, there is a price to pay...in both mental and physical trauma, and also in the annals of history... Most of his service time was spent as a mechanic, but he saw the surgical tents and the wounded coming back...He would joke when I asked how bad it really was, "If the people came back in as bad a shape as the planes did, I'd be surprised that we still had an army." In hindsight, it's obvious he didn't want to talk about it seriously and risk flashing back to that time, and I respect that... My eternal gratitude to any who have put themselves in harm's way for the sake of others...and I hope and try to make sure in my own tiny way that if we are to send people to fight, they are only sent on worthy missions, and not some industrial complex or geo-political scheme...

Now I get it. I'm always drawn to people who have been through some shit. I know that it was your brother that the bad shit really happened to (and I'm so fucking sorry any of that happened) but as the sibling of a chronically unwell person, I understand how hard it has been for you too. The feeling of helplessness is never far away. You're angry but there's no one to be angry at. And you disappear really, because the whole family is concentrating so hard on the person who is sick that you may as well not exist. And that's just the way it has to be, so there's nothing to do but accept that. And you're losing your sibling, the person they were, so there is grief over that too. It's hard. It's really hard. Sending you love from across the pond - Jen, Scotland

I was like 13 when this song came out and it didn’t really have a huge effect on me until I joined the military in 2000 and then went to war in Afghanistan and came home with mental and physical scars. This video is comprised of Metallica and scenes from the movie Johnny Got His Gun with the incomparable Jason Robards and it’s about a soldier who was blown up with a mortar and lost all of his limbs and his ability to speak. He was trapped inside his own mind.

To echo many of the other comments, bless your brother and you. Not that I have any authority to bless anyone but it’s from the heart. I got an early retirement from the Navy for health reasons. Mostly did submarine navigation and spying on the bad guys. The “health reasons” were more mental than physical. The book Johnny Got His Gun was one of three banned for Allied troops during WW2. The other two were enemy propaganda. It was also banned for the Axis troops.

I didn’t serve but I’ve lived a life that has given me similar ptsd as soldiers because of the fact that my oldest sister died in a tragic train accident 3 months before I was born so the last 3 months my brain was being formed my mother was having nightmares every night, and then when I was born it didn’t get better, before my first Christmas my stepfather stole all my mom’s money and left us, and then my mom married my biological father who turned out to be an alcoholic abusive drunk who beat me,forced fed me and locked me in a dark room whenever I cried, and that was only the start of my ptsd
