The thing is with a software router like pf/opnsense it all depends on the hardware you buy. I mean you can compare a router like this with the router they have in the Rack. However that router does not do wifi and just route IPs on Physical links. Where as this is basically just geared for home use and over the Air stuff. Its hard if not impossible to do a comparison especially if you wanna have/see wifi numbers, because this is just not what pf/opnsense are build for.

The prices of all these Wifi 6 routers / access points is getting kind of ridiculous. It's made me think about building something that I can upgrade later by buying a new M.2 wifi card. Annoyingly, the Intel AX200/AX210 cards stop you using them in AP mode.

One point that reviewers never talk about is the company support for their routers over the years. I've been using TPLink until last year, but their abandoning a lot of their routers. Just FYI - most TP-Link devices do have first class dd-wrt and OpenWRT support, just look for the Qualcomm based ones. As for Asus - they also stop updating their devices' firmware after 2-3 years; i.e. I have a perfectly capable 4G-AC53U LTE-A modem/AC wifi router combo, which launched for 200€. 4 core CPU, 256mb RAM, 128mb flash - doesn't recieve any updates anymore!

@@Psychx_ In case the of the Asus routers, the open source firmware is basically the same as the closed source version, but usually with more features still under testing. For the TP-Link routers, they suffers a lot using open/dd-wrt. In most cases I just switched back to the stock firmware. And, well, one of my Asus routers is 5 years old, and still receiving updates.

To be honest, WiFi is kinda sus at least for Czech Republic. Most routers on 5GHz are only channel 36-48, so not great and as an example tplink has to dynamically switch between its DFS channels to avoid interference to radars. So, congested channels 36-48 it is. So there isn't much point of getting a router like this, most router will behave kinda same, so basically poorly on wireless 😂

My ISP provides the cheapest PoS router possible with like a 10ft range on the signal. Like seriously - it can't even pass through a wall, so if you go outside the front door literally 5 feet from the router you'll lose connection to it. So we bridged a higher end model to it with a much stronger signal. My ISP lost its shit. "You can't do that! It's causing errors in our router that are backing up to the gateway to your area, and the signal strength on our router is just fine for your house."

Can you test out these Fast Routers by connecting two routers to two different PCs and then instead of checking download speeds on the speedtest website just simply transfer a file in between the two PCs that are connected to these two routers. In the case of my linksys router, when I turned OFF the 'media prioritization' feature, I went from 400mb down to 950mb. I bought a Razer Sila a long time ago and it has been my mainstay for a while. But instead of having it connect to the internet, my actual WAN is an OpenWrt box - a FriendlyElec NanoPi R6s - that has such a ridiculous SoC that I also use it as a mini server (Jellyfin, TVHeadend, Shoko, Monica, NextCloud, Audiobookshelf, and even more). Since that, I have been trying to get Razer to tell me who built their router and allow me to change it to OpenWrt, because they ended support for that device. And, this is where I see the bigger problem with "consumer solutions": They can just end support for the device, and you can't do anything with it after the fact (as in, security updates and alike). I hope MSI keeps those things well maintained and allows communities to eventually "take over" to do whatever with them once they decide to end support. Because having a dead, unsupported brick of potential security threads and E-Waste kinda sucks ^^'

I'm a little bit confused. He said that if you're gaming you won't have lag. Does that mean that this is equivalent to a wired connection when gaming? I've always been told that It is always faster to use a wired connection when it comes to gaming lag. Can you clarify this for me? Because I would very much like a Wi-Fi connection with no leg so I can move my gaming computer to a different room that currently does not have a wired connection but I play FPS games and I can't afford any more lag than I already have

Companies that put out these routers need to add little optional modules that enable different modems, ADSL2+, VDSL+ for those that don't have NBN access, i hate having two routers with one in bridging mode just to use the router i want. Yet it's often the easiest way to solve the issue.

One point these videos always miss is if you can figure qos on your router is that qos is really only obeyed in your local network once it goes to your ISP they will either strip the qos or ignore it And the one thing that this home qos does is it will take your internet speed and then cap it out so if you have a gig they'll Reserve maybe a hundred Megs for overhead that way you have a more streamline experience while overall lowering the speeds of the network
@anthonymudge9768
@anthonymudge9768 Жыл бұрын
Generally you configure your Internet connection's top speed in your router's QoS settings so while it does cap it, you don't notice that the speed has been capped. I would also argue that QoS at the chokepoint that is your Internet connection matters more there than it does at your ISP.

And the "Wifi 6" branding has been a huge pain, too. Ran into several routers that didn't support 802.11(az), and even one that didn't support 802.11(ac). Called them up and they claimed the missing protocol "wasn't necessary". Slimy and probably technically false advertising, but good luck getting them on that if the package doesn't explicitly name a protocol...

Why not? Most dedicated ports in homes are shitty CAT5, then patched to a jumper cable and plugged into gigabit or even 10/100 port lol. Most new wireless access points have 2.5Gb Ethernet ports and can handle upwards of 5Gb of traffic. Assuming you have no bottle necks you should be able to max out your internet connection with multiple devices. Plus most people don’t even have gigabit internet…so at the end of the day all your fancy shit is bottle necked down to your 50Mb connection lol regardless wired or wireless.
@CRneu
@CRneu Жыл бұрын
@@MCC0NN377 wifi is inconsistent. you can say "shitty cat5" but even cat5 will be more consistent for gaming or video calling than wifi. LTT has at least one video explaining why this is. you dont need a lot of speed for gaming, you need consistent pings and packet transfer which wifi is notoriously crap for. if you live in a populated area(apartment/condo, etc) your wifi will be congested and pretty bad. using a wired connection fixes all the issues with wifi. There's a reason when you have wifi issues the number one troubleshooting step is, "Have you tried plugging directly into the router to see if the issue persists?" 99% of the time the issue goes away.

It has uses for other things though I'm also in the UK & use a separate VPN router from the Virgin media supplied one The problem is the biggest bottle neck for me is the cpu power of my VPN router which causes more slowdown than expected when VPN gaming Buying something like this with a much better CPU plus the future proof options (although I already have wifi 6e devices) would be good The only concern is the VPN covering the entire network capabilities.

I've yet to see a good home QOS. My Asus router has QOS for gaming and it literally just slows everything else down... You only need this if you are throttled for speed based on what you are trying to do. With a 1 gig home connection and 5 people at peak at home.... zero issues with QOS off.
