The way she pronounces "Bob-Omb" with the emphasis in the wrong places reminds me of the first time I tried to read ボンバーキング out loud (not knowing that it meant "Bomber King"). It ended up sounding more like "Bon Bar King" or even "Bon Barking", with the emphasis on "BAR"

"Mb" is already a weird consonant combo in English. Like, most pronunciation guides to English words with "mb" leave the B silent, but many native speakers lightly pronounce it anyway. And "bomb" can be rendered in Japanese pronunciation as either "bomu" or "bon", which makes "bonba_" for "bomber" seem out of nowhere.
@NoriMori19922 жыл бұрын
@@CarbonRollerCaco That's true. That's probably why I didn't pick up on the meaning the first time I read it - in English there'd be no second "b".

@@CarbonRollerCaco Actually, "mb" is perfectly fine in Japanese. When you have words with "nb" in Japanese, for example "konbini", it's actually pronounced "kombini" (although many Japanese don't think about it, but within linguistics it's well-known).

Let's face it: some of the JP names for Gen 1 Pokés are pretty sad. Some are just straight names of preexisting animals/plants/other ideas (Hitokage, Lizard, Zenigame, Cocoon, Spear, Pigeon, Sand, Pixie, Rafflesia, Gallop, Ghost), the fire dogs and the Eeveelutions are child's pet names (Guardy, Windy, Showers, Thunders, Booster), the legendary birds are equally lamely named (Freezer, Thunder (ARE YOU SERIOUS GAME FREAK TWO SEPARATE POKÉMON NAMED THUNDERS AND THUNDER TWO PLAIN WORDS WITH LITERALLY A DIFFERENCE OF ONLY ONE LETTER), Fire), Urigeller got mangled into Yungeller because of a handwritten katakana misread (ri=リ, n=ン) even before the RL Uri Geller got his knickers in a knot over the Pokémon-eeyurgh.

Birdo and ostro are switched, imagine how many playground fights this game has started.
@CarbonRollerCaco2 жыл бұрын
Certain manuals of the NES version switched them, too. -And the way that Birdo was described made her transgendered to avoid controversy with players being encouraged to beat up females due to trans people being seen as mere confused loonies back then-even though Cheep Cheep was already called female in the SMB1 manual and SMB3 would have an undeniedly female enemy in the form of Wendy O. Koopa (who incidentally is one of the harder Koopalings to beat in that game).- EDIT: Whoops; turns out Catherine/Birdo was always a hermaphroditic female (though originally described as a male thinking himself to be female even though she spits eggs) even in Japan. No wonder Yoshi's into her (I'm assuming the "main" Yoshi that's friends with Mario is supposed to be male considering how he dresses on the rare official occasions that he _is_ clothed). Guess it really was just Capcom USA that had issues with beating up women (Final Fight 1). Welcome to the 1980s.

If you read the manual and know that Mario, Luigi, Toad and Peach had the same dream you can deduce that this adventure really happened, it was not just a dream.
@CarbonRollerCaco2 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say for sure. The manual emphasizes that only Mario had the initial dream, and the ending makes it clear that he was _still_ dreaming even after waking up in the beginning, though it doesn't say whether his friends shared the overall dream, so it's certainly possible that Subcon's supposed to be a real place within Mario's world in some way, possibly only accessible from the outside via forces of some sort invading dreamers' minds. Plus, some Doki Doki/SMB2USA characters already existed outside of Subcon, namely the Shy Guys and Pokeys, since Yoshi's Island is the canonical start of Mario's adventures. Though YI Pokeys look different from SMB2USA Pokeys who would end up later known to exist outside of Subcon along with Bob-Omb, Birdo and the vegetables, so if Subcon was a mere fiction within Mario's world, he would've either have dreamt of those characters from encountering them as Baby Mario alongside his older self in games like some of the Mario sports games and M&L: Partners in Time or through getting premonitions of them, the latter of which not being too far out of the question since YI establishes Mario and Luigi have a psychic bond that allows one to know where the other is. And let's not dive into the whole mess with Link's Awakening. Either way, the name "Subcon" makes sense as it's short for "subconscious". And the appearance of Bob-Ombs in SMB3 suggests that Doki Doki may have been initially made as an early SMB2 or SMB3 before SMB2JPN ended up being a harder version of SMB1 with new levels and elements plus occasional reuse of certain obstacle setups prevoously exclusive to the arcade SMB1. So maybe SMB2USA is the real SMB2 and the real SMB1 is a hybrid of both SMB1 games and SMB2JP. Early Mario be a very warped zone.

Us Mario fans are trying desperately to uncover the lore of the series. Meanwhile Miyamoto-san: “Lore, huh? I wonder what that means.” I mean, seriously. There was no Zelda timeline either, until we brute-forced one into existence.
@scottydu812 жыл бұрын
@@cameronspencer9619 It is so easy to make a non-confusing Zelda timeline- Zelda 1 & 2 are for the NES, LttP is for the SNES, Ocarina and MM are for the N64, etc. That’s literally all there is to it lol

The Satellaview "sequel" shows that they indeed went to a "dream world", as opposed to the events entirely being fabricated by their minds. Of course, that's the Satellaview, so...kinda speaks for itself how not-obvious that is.

So did half the manuals for the original NES SMB2USA. I'm guessing they were for different versions and Collection/All-Stars only converted the wrong one. Or, rather, simply near-straight copied the wrong one since the NES and SNES main processors use the same instruction architecture.
