“Montserrat Cabelle is sensational. She has that same kind of emotion as Aretha Franklin. The way she delivers a song is so very natural”. (Freddie) His nickname for her was Montsy. 🌹🌹🌹

This song hints at their meeting which occurred in Barcelona which is where Montserrat lived. There is video of him meeting her and he is so nervous, it is incredible to watch. She is warm and welcoming and Freddie was not only a huge fan of opera, Montserrat was his favorite singer and at the time she was the top soprano in all of opera. Freddie just wanted to meet her and record a tape of the two of them singing one of his songs but once they had recorded that first song, Montserrat told Freddie that they should do a whole album together. Freddie had to scramble to write a whole album worth of music because you just don't say no to the top Diva of opera. Yes, this song was for the Barcelona Olympics but Freddie already knew he was sick and that he would never live long enough to perform it there so they recorded it and it did indeed play at the Barcelona Olympics but neither Freddie or Montserrat were there to do it live because Freddie passed away in 1991.Their voices marry so beautifully and they were the first to mix rock and opera as a sellable product.

You are right. This was the official theme of the Olympics games in Barcelona 1992. Freddie died in 1991, 8 months before de opening ceremony.

At first he was concerned about his movements, then he realized that he was singing with an opera diva, so he decided he better keep up. Absolutely wonderful together. Montserrat said that more young people started coming to the opera after this as they wanted to see who that woman was that was “screaming” with Freddie

Love this...they became very good friends :) Freddie had long been an admirer of Montserrat and she of him. She wanted to do a song with him for the Barcelona Olympics :)

Freddie solo or with Queen could always surprise because he sought out the challenge to rock the boat - there was nothing he could not sing. He admired Caballe as the greatest soprano of that time and when they met, it was a combo of love, admiration and respect - two worlds collide! His Aids diagnosis made the effort harder but so rich...

Freddie and Montserrat did several songs together and I bet you'll love the song "How Can I Go On" it was sang on the same night! I love to see the younger generations checking out the music I grew up on and still love to this day! Freddie and Queen are definitely the best band and frontman we had and still have. Great reaction and may I say, more Queen please! 👏

Thank you for doin this brother!! I knew you would love it!!! ❤️ . Someone already commented the context of the song for me, essentially Freddie heard her sing and and said "she had THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VOICE HE'D EVER HEARD" and had to meet her. They met in Barcelona ("the moment you stepped into tje room you took my breath away-yyyyy 😉) was exactly how he felt. He loveeeeddd her and she loved him back deeply. They created a entire album together ❤️ its absolutely beautiful. Afterward she was sought-after to collab with others but she said "no" to everyone, she reserved that love and honor only for Freddie 🥰 . After the album was completed, it so happened that yes, the Olympics were in Barcelona in 92. The song "initiated" the the games, sadly Freddie had passed in 91 prior to opening ceremonies. 💔 (Here is the other video if you'd like to check it out) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j5eWnLJ7qb6lXXk.html

Freddie Mercury had a long standing interest in all genre's of music including opera. "Bohemian Rhapsody" hints at this.. So the story goes in1983 he attended a performance at Covent Garden Opera House in London, to hear and see Luciano Pavarotti sing opera. Montserrat Caballe(prononced CABALL-YAY), I believe, sang the lead female role. From the moment he heard her first aria, Freddie was overwhelmed and smitten with her voice. For many Montserrat Caballe is considered one of the greatest operatic "Diva's"(in the purest sense of the word)of all time. Freddie desperately wanted to meet her and subsequnetly his management team reached out to hers and a meeting was arranged in Barcelona, her birthplace and hometown. Legend has it that Freddie Mercury, already a superstar, was as nervous as a cat before the meeting pacing up and down restlessly. When they did meet, within minutes there was a powerful attraction based on huge admiration for each other's respective talents that was to last the rest of their lives. The duet "Barcelona" was composed by Freddie and his musical maestro Mike Moran as a tribute and homage to the "Diva", being both her birthplace and hometown. Apparently early on in their collaboration, Montserrat asked a little tartly, "What's the matter...? Why do you only want to sing one song with me..?". Freddie seemingly did not answer as she continued, "How many songs are thee in a Rock Music Album...?" "..er.. ..usually 10 or so", was his mumbled reply, feeling somewaht abashed.. "Fine..!! So, we'll do 10 songs then...!", was her prompt reply. Freddie was apparently staggered.. As another example of their true regard for each other, on one occasion, Montserrat mused to her collaborator, "Why do You want to sing with me....? I am Old ..I am Fat..!". Freddie replied promptly, "Montsy...You are Music... Music has no Age..."!.. Their collaboration was greeted with scepticism, even derision by many. Montserrat Caballe, was even accused of betraying her operatic heritage. Fortunately each was steadfast and totally comitted to their project. "Barcelona" was first performed at the prestigious "Ku Club" on the island of Ibiza in 1987, to instant rapturous acclaim. The duo had silenced their critics forever. Subsequently they were approached by the Barcelona, Olympic Bid Commitee, hoping to host the 1992 Summer Olympics. They immediately agreed and the powerful duet became central to the city's successful bid. The performance you showed was quite rightly a theatrical/musical masterpiece performed at the "La Nit" Centro de Cultura in Barcelona , as part of the lavish celebrations to welcome the official Olympic flag to the city. Over the Top...? Maybe..Dramatic..? Undoubtedly, yet in every way it complimented the majestic anthem, not overpowering it or the huge superstars performing.. It was hoped that the two legendary singers would perform it at the Opening ceremony, but the fates decreed differently and Freddie tragically died 7 months prior to the event many still consider to be the best "Opening Ceremony" ever. Montserrat Caballe only performed the triumphnat anthem once more after Freddie's demise and that was to a recording of his voice in the role., which was incredibly difficult for her emotionally. For the rest of the time, she preferred to keep it as a sacred tribute to her cherished friend and collaborator. She sadly died in 2018 and the world suddenly became both a little greyer and colder. But thankfully due to technology we can still enjoy and thrill to this triumphant anthem..! "VIVA BARCELONA...!!"

Freddie was kind of fanboy of Monserat and was happy as child as she agreed to record a album with him. IN fact , when they first met , it was like 2 souls meeting, they were just one of the same kind. The song "Barcelona" was in the list to be the song for the olympic games in '92 in Barcelona, but for some reasons it became a pop song nobody cares about today, which made Queen fans VERY upset. IN my opinion, this song shows the talent of Freddie, not only being a rock star, but also being respectet by one of the greatest opera singers of the time!

Actually, at first they were going to do one song and then she asked if they could do a whole album. And it was one of the songs used at the '92 Olympics -- NBC coverage of it is available on KZfaq. And finally, not sure why you're saying it became a pop song, that no one cares about it today -- there's more than 80 million views of it on TouTube -- or that it made Queen fans upset. Every Queen fan I've ever heard loves it, along with the album.

Watching this with you was WONDERFUL. You honesty had me laughing; Of course now you know the music was used in the 92 Olympics in Barcelona and for the Summer Games in England I believe. The album they made (10 songs, I believe, maybe 9) anyway it was a hit.
