My father and grandfather did that to a GMC Jimmy back in the late '70's. They put in a 353. It was my grandfather's truck. He would pick me up from school in it. He had a pull knob to shut it down (fuel) and an emergency shutdown pull knob (air). He pulled an airstream all the way to Alaska in it. That sound brings back memories.

As an owner of a 6.5 “Detroit” that has pissed away way too much $ on it only to have it puke head gaskets again, I fully agree! (Although the 6.5 would tow a 35’ camper at 70 mph and get 17-19mpg)

The cool thing about the 1990s 6.5 Turbo Suburbans was that they were 1500 HD, they had 8 lugs, torso bar front suspension, bigger brakes, 4L80e transmission and a 14 bolt rear end. I believe his 1995 is the only year that the 5.7 TBI had a 4L60E. It'd be cool if he could swap an NV4500, ZF-5 or ZF-6 into it from some scrap rusted out 3/4-1 ton upstate NY truck.

700R4s do not have engine braking in the "OD" range - they have one-way clutches that prevent that. If you shift into the "D" range, it applies additional clutches that will enable engine braking in 1st-3rd. It sounds like your transmission might be a gas 700R4 based on the shift points. If you swap a 700R4 diesel governor into it (they're pretty cheap), it will probably shift at more sensible speeds.

@@Ratkill9000 I would normally agree with you but it's a half ton suv with less than stock power and way more weight, there's nothing you can legally strap to this thing that is heavy enough to kill that transmission at this power level. 99.5% of this thing's payload capacity is devoted to existing, and the 0.5% is for the driver.

1995 Suburbans had a 5.7 TBI with a 4L60E transmission stock. That's why it needs the TPS sensor under hood still that he was pointing out to give a throttle opening signal to the computer for the trans.

Lifes a learning process, best thing we can do is take our time and be as attentive to detail as possible. Also I've found that if you have the willingness and knowledge to create an alternative solution that makes due with what you already have alot of times it's worth it especially if it improves the repairability in the event of a future failure. I've macgyver'd my way through countless problems that way and I've honestly gotten really good at solving issues without spending anything by simply repurposing scrap materials from past repairs or retrofitting components that match the functionality required even if it requires me to modify the stock setup. Many times the engineers didn't care to think about the repair aspect and their design makes it unnecessarily time consuming and/or expensive to repair with stock components. If I can achieve the same result and not break the bank I'm all for it and that's after years of believing the mantra that I'd rather fix it now than have it fail on me later on. Now Ive adopted the somewhat blow or go mindset and unless I know for a fact something is gonna fail in the very near future I don't even bother replacing it and I'm never afraid to mash the gas pedal in a vehicle I'm driving. Its either gonna go or it won't so fuck it and send it. Lol

Wayne - if you ever have to pull the flywheel again, when you go back together, cut the heads off of a couple of long bolts to use as guide studs. Put them in the crank, slide flywheel on, slide spacer on. put your adapter plate in place, then put the flex plate on and tighten the flywheel bolts. Pull the line up studs and install the last two flywheel bolts. Easy peasy. Love the channel and content dude. Keep it coming!

You may have to play with the weights on the governor in the trans. The 2 stroke isn't turning it enough rpms to make it shift they way it should. The low rpm is not creating enough line pressure to make the tv cable adjustment correct. When you go full throttle, the trans is set up for 5-6000, not 2500.
@jeremymardlin5381
@jeremymardlin5381 23 күн бұрын
The governor in the trans is for a gas engine. You need one for a 6.2 or 6.5 Detroit. That should make it shift right. Another possibility is fine somebody who knows how to modify the weights in the governor in it currently.
@BillyWillicker
@BillyWillicker 23 күн бұрын
It's not only the governor. The valve body is set up differently in the bushings/valves/TV/governor for each application. Doing just governor changes will make some shifts happen at a better time while making others worse. You would need to do some major changes to have a 700 work well with low RPM shift strategy. A 200-4R from an olds 5.7l diesel would have closer to ideal shift points but is not sturdy enough for a Detroit.

A 4L80E can be mated with an aftermarket controller and then you can get it to shift at the RPM's you want. With a hydraulic transmission you may be able to fenangle the throttle cable to get it to work fairly well but may not get it perfect.

I love watching you work on "old junk" much more than I would like to watch people work on expensive new things. I don't like to watch rich dudes rubbing it in my face. I like watching 2 stroker because I like seeing someone who is obviously doing something they love with obsolete things, not wasting things, making things work, doing good work, tasteful work, intelligent work. I can't stand people who do click bait, who trash things for no reason, who are destructive, materialistic, act stupid or crazy on purpose. 2 stroker comes off as a genuine dude and I believe he acts the way he is on camera when he is off camera and I think he is sincere in what he says. He would probably get more views and make more money if he was like that but, I am glad he isn't willing to sacrifice his class for that. My father was a trucker from Oswego County NY, he loved all this kind of stuff. I love hearing 2Stroker talk his accent reminds me so much of the working class upstate NYer guys I was around as a kid. It really warms my heart. It's also impressive to see a guy who is doing well in spite of all the downsides of living up in NY. The weather, the economy, the government, the laws, the rust, the cost of living, the taxes. I love it up there in the summer out in the country. I'm 41 and I was in the military and I just couldn't make it up there so I live Tennessee. Thanks making these videos, I really appreciate them.

If you go to a 4l60 or 4l80e trans, you "could" say to heck with the computer, and look up how to hot wire the shift solenoids. Full line pressure, full manual shift. I have done it with a 4l60e and it worked mint, behind a 350 anyway. Slightly different shift solenoid sequence on the 4l80, but that can be fully wired just using the pressure switch built into transmission.. cool videos man, i really find this stuff interesting.

Still cool and better than the old 350 or 305 it used to have. A $1k truck (or less) with a $3k (or more) engine and swap into it ...

If you could find an old rusted out donor truck with an NV4500 that would be pretty cool. Even like an SM465, TH400 or an 80e. Maybe a ZF-5 or ZF-6 could be adapted...might have to find like a 1/2 ton V6 manual Chevy like that for a pedal box and stuff. Lot of work... it's a pretty decent looking truck for a 1995 GMT400, most of those are absolutely thrashed and destroyed. Probably worth it to do the body mounts, clean off the surface rusted area in the back in hit it with some of that rust reverser paint that has a chemical reaction with the iron oxide to stop the rot in the back. It seems like it would be an alright rig once you're cruising along at highway speed. Definitely seem slushy and boggy at low speeds. Ingenious build, the guy who did it must have really been a character. To drive the truck 500k miles is really a testament to how much better things were built back then. Hopefully you figure something out to do with it.

You need to modify the shift points of trans to shift at a lower rpm, your max engine rpm is what somewhere around 3.5 - 4k? So you need it to shift at 1500 or 2000 rpm, because the trans is built for an engine that does 5000rpm or higher ...

I used to make BIG money back in the 90s yanking diesel turds out of Suburbans and replacing them with powerful 454 big blocks that would chirp first and second gear- no turbo required. It is sad that the EPA killed big blocks and we are now stuck with money pit diesels. Had the EPA not done that, you would be seeing supercharged and turbo charged direct port injected big blocks in modern trucks. Aside from fuel economy, that 8 cents per pound a junk yard will give you gives Detroits a reason to be acquired...

our Buddy and volunteer o2S clothing model is a transmission guy.......You should find a thick weighted "diesel" governor from a 6.2 truck and change the wiring in the pan so it locks up after the 1-2 shift and stays locked. will feel a lot more like the Allisons, except none of the smaller GM units with sprags 350 ,400, 700 ,4l60, 4l80,etc will engine brake unless in manual selector positions .Also If my memory is right on all this ancient stuff a 350 governor gear also allows you to manipulate the whole TV/ shift point curve a bit more if needed?

That made of glass 4L60 wont hold up behind a diesel, it also needs a TPS signal or a TV cable added or adjusted. The governor can be swapped for a diesel style also... good luck my man...

Is there a difference in valve body’s between gas and diesel. Seems like it shifts a too high of rpms.

" Good enough for who it's for " A good friend of mine ( who passed away three years ago on this coming June 6 at 73 ) said that to me a few years ago before he passed . I never heard that saying here in Texas before . He and his dad ( Texas transplants ) were originally from Missouri ( aka Misery as he called it ) He told me his dad use to say that .

Any chance he was a diesel mechanic named Donny? I knew a great guy who taught me a lot would say that all the time when we worked on loaders at a steel mill. No clue if he's alive or where he's at now.

Should put 2 countersunk assembly bolts put in on each side of that spacer to make that a little less fucky. Assemble spacer and flywheel, install cover, screw on flexplate, everything lined up and toit, bust out the peanut butter. That trans just sounds like it's clapped.

Wayne you might add 1/4 inch per adjustment more on T.V. CABLE Drive it and see if that doesn't change that s*** point up on top there. First. The second second to third I assume it's got locked up on the converter there too I don't know why I didn't watch you if you did anything different on the converter or not. Anyway, sounds good. Love to have it. Now you're gonna put bigger injectorsTurboand after cooler jakes brakesThe whole slos in I know you were concerned about the transmission holding up to all that but we only live once right?God bless you
