➡️ I've been chomping at the bit to do another analysis on AFI. As I once said, my only real impression of the band was from "Miss Murder", and discovering "Totalimmortal" a few months ago flipped everything I knew about this band on its head. "Sacrifice Theory" from their 2000 release "The Art of Drowning" was such a holistic composition, despite flying by in 2 minutes flat. I discuss how bassist Hunter Burgan drives the song with meandering pentatonic grooves against the band's upbeat-oriented riff styles, his insanely swift double-note scale movements, the band's unpredictable rhythms and accent placements (especially in the bridge), the dense melody layering (how 'bout them gang vocals?!), and much more! I juuuuust wished the bass was a touch louder. 😅🤞🏼💀

If I remember correctly Davey Havoc ripped his vocal chords after sing the sorrow so that's why the sound changed a lot. I still like their new and old stuff. As far as alkaline trio I love the ep where they traded songs with Hot water music, bleeder was done so well

The guitarist and bassist would do gang vocals, but they could always count on the crowd to do em as well. Their live shows in this era were absolutely legendary.

I saw AFI in 99 two days before Halloween at galaxy in Dallas. They and Hot Water Music opened for I think Madball or another nyc hardcore band. The fucking place went totally batshit. One of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. Lost a shoe in the pit

They started out as a jokey punk band. Then just for the 2nd and 3rd album they thought they were hardcore. Hence changing the name from A Buncha Fucking Idiots to Asking For It (such a hardcore band name).

Hunter is easily one of the most underrated and overlooked bass players out there. The same can be said about the band as a whole. So damn good! 😎

It's so funny. I didn't really think about it until NOFX called it out. After that song, I really picked up on all of AFI's woahs, and it actually starting annoying me. It's hard to hear AFI (at least old AFI) now.

I was lucky enough to see them in Seattle during this era of AFI....and yes the other members helped with the vocals, but most of the audience knew to join in as well.

Thank you Mark!!! AFI was my favorite band for nearly 20 years, and I still love them to this day. So diverse in sound, amazing songwriting, and just good dudes all around. Love that they still take hardcore bands or affiliation with them on the road.

Punk from this era was all about being an audio rollercoaster from start to finish. No real meter changes, unless needed, but tempo would flex from being focused on the back-beat to on-beat. And that's what's made some of the best stuff. Lightning fast chord changes, varied by whatever lead voice in a 3-5 piece lineup they had. Making magic out of simplicity is the name of the game in punk and old AFI is a prime example.

The first time I heard AFI was at a hardcore festival in D.C. The crowd went absolutely insane during their set. I swear people were stacked four high in front of the stage. I knew right away that they were just different. This sound mixed with the goth esthetic was quite the first impression.

Absolutely loved this reaction. AFI was my favorite band in high school and I still to this day at the age of 40 have them in heavy rotation in my playlists. First time I saw them live, I think it was ‘98, they were opening for Good Riddance.

So happy to see this today! Great example of that early/mid period AFI, especially hunter’s style from that era. Watching a live version might help you hear or see it better. As you can tell by comments, the eras of this band can be very polarizing, they essentially changed sounds every album to the point where it may even be hard to recognize who it is - I’ve loved all of the growth and evolution (though 99-2003 is hard to beat). For a less busy/fast picking style and maybe a more delicate/melodic style, I’d suggest listening to some stuff from the Sing the Sorrow sessions (now the world), Decemberunderground (endlessly she said), crash love (too late for gods), or Blood (Aurelia). Hunter is truly an amazing bass player.

You should check out Road to Recovery by Rufio. It has that punchy bass line intro that you would definitely enjoy. Also please Like the Angel by Rise Against!!

One of my favorite Independent Wrestlers, Kennedi Copeland uses AFI’s Miss Murder for her entrance music and the entire crowd sings her to the ring. Such an awesome experience.

I don't know if i'm just bias but every time I listen to them I can't stop raving about how freakin good everyone is in the band, the drums are so powerful and inventive, bass fills the spots but is totally in it's own style, and guitar is pull-offs, hammer-ons, slides and just perfect... anyway i love this band so much

To answer your question about the gang vocals, they always invited a bunch of friends over to the recording sessions to create the chorus of voices. This was really common in the scene back in the day. What a lot of fun that time was!

Another old school one you should check out from what I consider their best album (Black Sails in the Sunset) is Narrative of Soul Against Soul. Hunter's bass is pretty forward in that one.

Great video as always! Another song that comes to mind for me when you talk about the role reversal idea of guitar and bass is Jenny Was a Friend of Mine by The Killers. If you check that song out, try to do the live version from Royal Albert Hall in 2009. Great stuff! It's been awhile since I've made any recommendations, but gonna throw a suggestion out for more Karnivool. New Day, Umbra, or Deadman would be great options, all from the same album as Goliath. And Chris Wolstenholme and Muse would be a good new band to listen to (live versions of Bliss live at The Mayan or Reapers from the Drones World Tour are both great with the bass mixed very well). Keep doing what you're doing!

Have you gotten any requests for The Dead Milkmen? I never realized how good their bass lines were when I started listening to them in the mid 80’s. Surfin’ Cow has a really good bass line, and Bitchin’ Camaro has a cool walking bass line. Their most popular song is Punk Rock Girl. Thanks for teaching us so much.

@@northofnashira2575in the very end of the song, you can hear him playing the B string on a guitar. I always thought it was bass, but I believe it is an acoustic guitar probably plugged into an amp. Listen to the very last chords of the song because I swear there’s guitar chords but maybe I’m crazy

You can get that high on a bass, but there are notes that are too low for it to be a guitar. Plus, the strings ring like bass strings.

I think I first heard AFI on an older Punk-O-Rama cd (or some compilation) and then bought my first AFI album (BSITS) around the Black Sails days. Being in Highschool listening to Black Sails and Art of Drowning was like a perfect storm for teen angst : ). Hunter has done a series of live play throughs (like Fat Mike), can't remember if he did Sacrifice Theory though.

I really love these in-depth analysis of "old" songs I listen to daily still to this day. AFI, as well as Tiger army always have a special place in my heart, such sweet memories! Check out Much the Same - Crying Wolf, speaking of old. This is the song that inspired me to play Bass like 20 years ago. Much the Same - Liar is also very fun to play. Also if you like AFI, Davey Havok, frontman of AFI is very close friends with "Nick13", frontman of Tiger Army, Nick13 is also featured on a lot of songs of AFI. Tiger Army is also very enjoyable to listen to as Bassist, Psychobilly music, the bassist uses an upright bass, producing a unique sound, also check them out!

It's impossible for me to pick a favorite track off The Art of Drowning because the entire album is just that good. This entire era of AFI (art of drowning, black sails, all hallows) was basically a perfect run, not a single miss on any of the tracks IMO. Hope this one wins the poll!!!

The group vocals are different live because while multiple members of the band sing, the crowd generally sings those parts as well. I saw them once where the power kept going out and everyone in the venue did half a song a cappella.

If you’re digging this style of horror punk, check out Balzac. Japanese horror punk heavily influenced by the Misfits with great gang vocals. “Out of the Blue II” it’s awesome with great jams throughout.

Art of Drowning is definitely one of my favourite albums from them. Crash Love was their last good album IMO despite probably causing the biggest divide in their fans. There are a couple of videos on instagram (reposted on youtube) of Hunter doing a playthrough of some songs.

yes, all the WOA's (AFI were king of them) at the show the entire crowd would lunge toward the stage and scream them as loud as we could. davey would get to the stage apron, thrive off the energy, grab people in the crowd and give the mic to everyone. This album was an amazing era in AFI tours. nowadays its prob huge crowds and people on phones.

Was at an AFI show last year, wasn't a huge crowd at all, and most people toward the front were definitely going crazy and not on their phone, I know because I was as far up front as I could get. Was such an awesome experience, I got to touch Davey when he came out into the crowd and had us hold him up.

The old AFI songs were kinda just a chorus A and chorus B alternating with a bridge thrown in somewhere. They used a lot of oh’s and whoa’s. This is pretty well suited for small live venues where the band was sort of face to face with the crowd. With the simple structure and anthemic gang vocals the audience can be part of the live music experience, singing the chorus at the band. And with the song structure most of the song basically functions as a chorus except the bridge. The live shows are super engaging. Their formula has changed quite a bit over the years. Maybe partly because they don’t really play small venues anymore.

One of the best punk albums I've ever heard. Wester and Nephilim are the standouts for me but their isn't a weak song on here.

If you wanna here the transition from this to Decemberunderground(album with miss murder), then I would recommend checking out the album Sing the Sorrow. Idk what i would suggest to showcase the bass tho

I neerlly stroked to "the art of drounding", is, so good, i lived off a road named howerd, and theres a drain-off for rain that makes me think of, "take the hallow" , and sleepy hallow, and also fall and awtum ,all at the same time, the band chimichlly affects me

Such a great record! The last of their purely punk/hardcore records before the major label dive, ‘Sing the Sorrow’. Still also a great record though admittedly, I’d say their last really great record, just a different flavour, not as punk. I mentioned it on your last AFI vid, but it bares repeating; old AFI was one of (if not thee) best punk bands of the mid and late 90’s. They absolutely dominated the hardcore scene during this record and the shows were insane! I do truly miss those days…I’m happy they found major success, because they certainly deserved it, but I do sometimes wish they’d go on the road playing shitty little clubs and basements again, playing nothing but these old songs….but if they did, good luck getting into one.😅 Just goes to show how short lived the best times in a band’s history can be. A good reminder to catch these bands when they’re freshly dominating scenes, cause you just never know what you’re missing out on!

If you're loving this era of AFI, you gotta check out Evelyn's Casket! AFI has hopped genres a few times, and I think they really cut this style way too short. Evelyn's Casket feels to me like where AFI could have gone if they continued to follow this sort of sound.

Happy to see you doing one of my favorite bands again! AFI was such a big part of my teen years. Davey Havok is also the person who made me realize I wasn't completely straight lol

I have a four string, and a six string mini gitar, and im not good atveither but i love the sound of them and the the old rustic hamonica, of which i have eight that i know of, i love the ressonnencevthat they can bring, no good at any of them , but i do love the sounds that they cand bring, maybe im just dumb for loceing old things like that, and i dont know how to really corispond with you but if your gereing me, if you never teach again, play what you love until your hands litterlly fall off, i know i would
