I'd love to know why what was done to Yankee Stadium ('73-'76) couldn't be done with Comiskey Park.

@@alonenjersey Money. Reinsdorf wanted his luxury boxes. If he has some vision he could have gotten them with a proper rehab like they did with Fenway. Then Jerry picked a very poor design which taxpayers had to fork over even more money later to try and rehab his bad design. There was an entry by a local architect to build his Amour Field, which was a fantastic design. But of course Reinsdorf didn’t pick the better design, from a news story he felt disrespected because the architect didn’t kiss his ring and go to him or some nonsense. Sox park now is better than the original design but it could be so much more. On the second the the closest seat is further from home plate than the furthest seat on the second deck of original Comiskey.

Thanks for the information. When it comes to new sport venues, the main thing that gives team owners a hard on is luxury boxes/luxury suites. I hear all that's left is the exact location of home plate near the parking garage. Just plain sad.

I was there. Am the guy crying in the LF boxseats. All she needed was a new coat of paint. Instead, they bulldozed all that baseball history. The Fools.

I was at this game. Still the most amazing fireworks show I ever saw. So many fireworks going off that the ashes were falling down all around everything. What a night!

I was stationed at Fort Gordon near Augusta, Georgia when this happened. When the New Comiskey Park opened in 1992, I was stationed just outside Seoul, Korea. I wish I was in town to see this great ceremony...or at least to get the local perspective when it happened. Great memories!!!!!

I was trying to figure out what the PA announcer said when the first fireworks from the last pyro show in Comiskey Park's final night game ever at that historic "Charlie's House" happened....Part of the message was muffled somewhat but I was trying to get these exact words..... "Ladies and gentlemen, the friends of Comiskey Park, True-Value Hardware and your Chicago White Sox are now proud to present its final and largest [post-game] fireworks display ever presented in historic Comiskey Park. Sit back and enjoy and look towards the skies over Comiskey Park for a spectacular sky-mastered salute to an end of an era and a celebration of a new beginning."

Of course this was on WGN-TV Channel 9 on a Saturday Night with Dan Roan and Joannie Lum in the both at old Comskey Park on the WGN News

The post-game firework shows at Old Comiskey Park probably started around 1976 or so. Guessing that every Friday night game would have these shows---so probably for a 168-game season, looks like they had an average of 20 firework shows per year. So for 14 years...probably a grand total of 280 firework shows. They added Saturday night firework shows later on around 1985 or so - probably 350 fireworks shows, so the last firework show in old Comiskey Park that is shown on this video marks approximately no. 350. And it was a very special pyrotechnics show indeed even though we missed the grand finale of the show.

Sorry, I am afraid of fireworks and I am not a Southern Illinois Miner baseball fan, so it was safer for me to watch those post game fireworks shows they had on televised Channel 44 Sox broadcasts, and then later on with those Channel 9 broadcasts.

I was there, and hear ya loud & clear. Only saving grace was another game on the next day, Sunday, September 30th. That was a very difficult one to leave, but I had to catch a plane back to Boston.

I was at this game with two of my sons and my brother in law. Could not get tix for final game so this was our substitute. We were in lower deck way back of first base and could not see the fireworks!

That song at the end sounds very, very much like Bruce Hornsby's piano work. Judging by the lyrics, I'm guessing it was a one-off piece especially for this occasion, and not commercially available.

The baseball palace of the world. I only saw it once. The final game against the red sox to complete a sweep that final year. Its a damn shame it was torn down. Not that the new is bad but theres no upper deck in the outfield. The playing field at the new Comiskey parks dimensions do not resemble the old. It was in far better shape than the dump on clark n addison ever will be. I know its only a stadium but Comiskey park was a "classic double decker" and the oldest in the American League. Shame on "whinesdorf" for taking that away. SHAME. Somn we have always coped n dealt with besides Bill Veeck. Shitty petty n poor ownership.

Just my take.. But this ballpark could have been similar to Allen Field House in Lawrence in terms of MLB had money been put into it and it still kept most its character.. This may be one of the biggest mistakes ever in terms of stadiums
