This Bread Pudding recipe came from out 1946 cook book and I remember my mother making this in the 1970's. It was a way of using your stale bread and turning it into a tasty desert with a few added ingredients like mixed fruit and spices, not to be confused with Bread And Butter Pudding which is a different thing.

I use the whole of the bread including the crusts as my recipe from my mothers cookery classes at school didn't say cut it off, you get more out of it and as you said Martin it was a way of not waisting leftover bread, over the years we have tweaked the recipe to our taste.

Never seen it done that way, i will give it a go, my mum cut bread in triangles and stacked them in a tray, then poured a egg custurd mixture over the top enough to cover the bread then spinkle currents over the top and bake

My mother in law used to make bread pudding but with custard over the top. So each slice you cut had custard on it. It was nomilicious. ❤️ If you like custard Martin you would definitely need your 'special' music. 😊 Well done cook Sharon again too. ⭐

I can't stop laughing. You two are so funny. You can't beat London banter. This and the old London Cheesecake (the one with the pastry and the coconut strands on the top) are my all time favourite 😍 I used to do penny for the guy outside a bakers when i was a kid in the 70's. Whenever I made enough money for a cake I'd go and buy one! 🤣

I had forgotten those cheese cakes until you just mentioned them. One of my favourites too. Nothing like the cheese cake we're all familiar with. We bought bangers with the money given to us for penny for the guy. Great fun letting those off.

Now this is what I call proper grub! 👏 I think that this recipe in particular, most people back in the day would use up whatever they had spare and simply add what they thought would go with this awsome pudding. I remember that one occasion my mum added some dates at Christmas time and wow a new version of this recipe was born! As always guys, thank you so much for sharing your unmissable show with us. Mum made this during the war when food was rationed. So hardly any ingredients. You might want to give it a go. I still make it like that , though in a cullender not a washing up bowl. RIP on stale bread, and place in clean washing up bowl, turn the cold tap on and soak the bread, squeeze out the water and put in bowl, add any mixed dry fruit, any sugar, and mixed spice. That’s it, put into a greased tin, and cook for about 1hr, try it with a fork to see if cooked, if the fork doesn’t come out clean, cook it some more. That’s it. It was delicious, and used to make the kitchen smell lovely.

My mother in law was well known for her bread pudding, it was made in the same way as yours she never measured any thing out. My late husband showed me how to make but it was never as good as hers so I used to get him to make. I have her baking tins my father in law gave them to me when mother died in 1980 and still make the pudding in it, as she had 7 children there wasn’t always milk to spare so she used cold tea.
