As construction begins on his new workshop, Pa Mac demonstrates how to begin building a pole barn type structure. A great video for showing the ins and outs of building a barn.
Be sure and subscribe to the Farm Hand's Companion channel to keep up with the progress as Pa Mac takes an undeveloped piece of property and turns it into a small subsistence farm. Watch for new episodes regularly. (As long as Pa Mac's alive and kicking, he's most assuredly farming and filming!)

Matt, Thanks for the compliments! Yes, I've heard of charring posts.Though insects don't like the burnt taste and charcoal doesn't decay or encourage fungi growth, the problem seems to be that charring causes cracks allowing decay further in to the uncharred parts of the post quicker than it would otherwise.Slow cooking without burning might harden the post and be of benefit, but we're back to labor intensive.Perhaps best to go with resistant trees.And yes,below frost line is ideal.Yours,Pa Mac

Wow that brings back a lot of fond memories - the rocks I mean. We used to live in Cheney Wa. & we had more volcanic rocks than soil. So mom had all six of us kids ' voulenteer' to be on her chain gang picking rocks all summer - it was a highly engaging activity, as engaging as digging post holes =D ha ha. My mom then stacked the rocks into raised planters to hold the top soil we had trucked in for our gardens. Now as a grown woman, what I wouldn't give for 6 acres full of free rocks! =D

I really like this design, the roof has a graceful slope because of the way it becomes less steep halfway down. Your grandparents had their house built on the same structure but arranged for living. My own wish would be to build under the same roof a workshop and the living quarters. This series on tbe building process is going to be engraved in memory. This buid can be done by one single peron and it's goo to know. The walls with the boards and the additional strips with the batd on it, give the build a very nice look. I'm actually surprised that such a simple device looks so classy.

Hey maxdecphoenix, That would take a lot of tar...and a whole lot of pine kinlin to make the tar (and still would only protect the outside). Much easier to just settle for one of the rot and insect resistant trees.If after many years the bottom of the poles rot so bad that there's nothing at ground level, I would jack the sills up slightly,cut the poles off as low as possible, and slide a rock under or make concrete piers, then jack the poles back down. Thanks for watchin' maxdecphoenix! Pa Mac

RunsWithWolves, Most trees rot too quickly to be worth using. But some take longer to rot when in contact with the ground. Look at episode 3 or read the article about Using Trees on Your Small Farm in the Country Ways section of the FHC website that tells more about naturally rot resistant trees and their characteristics. Years from now the bottoms of these cedars will probably rot but by then my grandkids will be the ones to have to do something about it. Maybe I'll still be around to help em.

@basilg78
@basilg78 7 жыл бұрын
This question depends on the municipality. I researched a hunting property in NJ or PA and searched building codes for a few municipalities using a search for "vacation cabin", "shed", or "garage" - basically, not intended to be a house. You can forego permits for those types of structures - but it had to be less than 10x10 or 12x12 depending on the municipality, you had to get it insured as whatever you claim it to be, then the insurance company certifies the structure type. You might find the codes are more forgiving elsewhere.

Good question, Richard. There are two possibilities: First, you can make sure two sides of the pole (the sides walls will be on) are plumb with the level. That will, of course, make the other two sides of the pole even less plumb than normal-but at least your wall sides are plumb. Second, you can hold the level in the middle of the pole and eyeball it makin' sure the edges of the pole on either side of the level taper inward toward the top at about the same level. Do this at every perspective all around the pole for as much accuracy as possible. When workin' with poles, you're rarely ever going to get it absolutely perfect, but you can pull the poles a bit with ropes, chains or come-alongs later to fix any problems once you start putting the sills, etc. up. Doin' it this way, your walls will be slightly slanted inward toward the top of the walls, unless you notch the wall sill at the bottom into the pole just a hair. (I usually pick the second way.) Hope this helps, Richard!

Yes, Tim; arrowheads and scrapin' tools are sometimes seen around the property. There's obviously been a lot of folks livin' here down through the years!

I was laughing at your commentary on the screen as you progressed. Stupid rocks! Hope you can use them for something else later on so they weren't just an obstacle.

It's more than a food down; 2 and a half to 3 feet. And the outer sapwood is chopped off because it'll rot anyway. Thanks for watchin', san379!

Fair enough! I would enjoy that! How would I find out about your speakin' engagements? I made it through all 12 of your videos and look forward to more. Have you made any others that can be found elsewhere? Thanks for replying!

SouthernPitt There are FHC Extras (not actual episodes, but short "extras" from leftover footage) on my channel, if you haven't already seen those. I don't do a lot of speaking engagements (it's hard to leave the property with responsibilities and all), but I usually post upcoming talks and so forth on the homepage of the FHC website. Thanks for watchin', SouthernPitt (and maybe I'll see you someday at one of the homesteading conferences!)
