After watching this, I got so 'homesick' for the late Miss Phyllis (Stokes) and Mr. (Dr.) Bucky and her videos showing her struggle to find a tea cake just like his grandmother's and how a viewer finally sent a recipe that was more similar to his memory. Maybe you were a viewer of hers, Lori? Her son has done a lovely job keeping her channel going and helping her ministry. Between your recipe and hers you've got me longing to try a batch of these.

What a joy Miss Phyllis was. My grandchildren love making those tea cookies! It was a gal named Patti that sent Miss Phyllis the recipe. Mr Bucky, after tasting it, looked up towards heaven and said, "I'm sorry, Grandma. These are better than yours." It was priceless!

My mom told me she grew up eating Tea Cakes. She was born in 1938 in North Carolina. I understand, her grandmothers and mom made Tea Cakes. I definitely want to make some Tea Cakes. They look like thick sugar cookies. I love a big thick sugar cookies. Thank you for sharing an old fashioned and treasured recipe.

Belinda, My mother was also born in 1938 and she was forever talking about her grandmother and mother making teacakes. Although I don't recall her making them often, she has the recipe written in her hand, and she titled it "Grandma's Tea Cakes." It's a treasure to me!

When my mother-in-law made hers, she rolled hers and some where round and some were square. If there were any left, she would use some in banana pudding. They were far better than vanilla wafers.

My Grandma rolled hers, too. They weren’t round like cookies and we never used the word cookie for them . They were just tea cakes . Sure wish I had her recipe but mostly she made them as after school treats for us and we were at school when she made them ❤️

Can’t wait to make! I love baking 6 cookies at a time in my little Emerial 360 Toaster oven. (Love it!) The rest are formed and frozen between layers of parchment. Bring out as needed and baked from frozen state. This keeps me from plowing down the whole batch in one day. 🤪 Thank you again!

This is very similar to a recipe my great grandmother made but hers didn't use confectioner sugar or have oil. She used to say she was "scottish to the backbone" 😊. She had a 57 acre farm and made everything from scratch. My mom and uncle grew up with her because her mom passed during childbirth when my mom was just a year and a half old, so I really thought of her as my grandmother. I can't wait to try this recipe.

My granny (born in 1896) made THE BEST tea cakes ever (recipe passed down to her by her mother who was born in 1874.) She never used measuring cups or spoons, just her hands ("a heaping, a smidgen, a pinch") and used a wood stove until the mid 1960s. Each of my aunts and female cousins have tried and tried to "figure out" her recipe but never could do it. I am going to try your recipe and see how close it is to hers. Thanks for posting!

Tea Cakes in England are a light, flat sweet, bread bun, containing dried fruits such as currants, sultanas, and orange peel. After baking we slice them across the centre, width ways, then toast them and eat them with lots of butter spread on them. Yum!!

I so agree with your statement about your grandmother always cooking from scratch. I sat here and thought, could my grandmother have followed a recipe like we do these days? It was always a handful of this, two handfuls, a smidgen, just a bit. Yet she taught me so much about baking and cooking. I've been going thru your recipes searching for what I can use for that box of goodies to my grandson. I figure these will pack well. I love what you read to us. Especially the part about before the war, I'm assuming the civil war. Now don't you think a bunch of young service men will enjoy that story. I'm going to sit and type what you read and print it to add to his box of these tea cakes.

My grandparents passed when I was young. My father was ten years older than my mother and was 32 when I was born. So his sisters & he taught me Polish cooking & baking. Thank you Ms. Lori for this recipe. I am going to make them real soon and will let you know how they came out. My Dad was a baker and chef and these cookies remind me of his snickerdoodles. I think that I will love them.

Oh my goodness, I am so glad to get this recipe. I have always heard about the southern teacake cookies from the old days. I have never had a teacake cookie, and being a northerner (Illinois) they were never part of my mom's recipes. I will definitely be making these this weekend. Thanks for sharing the history of teacakes, it was very interesting.

I’ve always wondered about the tea cakes I’m so happy to see that you made them, they look delicious. I love the old home recipes, I learned all my cooking ways from my mama and I’m so glad that I cared enough to listen to her & learn from her. I can’t wait til your cookbook is completed, 🙂 Love you guys.

My little Texas mama looked high and low for a Tea Cake recipe to make ones like her mother made. We looked high and low and never found one. She has been gone for twenty two years now, so in honor of her, I’m going to make these with my daughters. Love your channel. Thank you for the recipe.

Oh I’d love a cookbook from you. Even the older one. How can I search for one? Please let me know if you have any more. Thank you so much for your videos. My mom worked for years as a cafeteria employee and loved her job. She kept money in her pocket and paid for the kids food who didn’t have enough money for their food. ❤

They look absolutely delicious!! I’ve never made them before and the only thing that I can think of that are similar are shortbread cookies. But we use softened butter not melted and we don’t use any granulated sugar just powdered sugar and of course flour and instead of vanilla extract we use almond extract but only a little bit. I look forward to getting a copy of your cookbook Miss Lorie, I think you are absolutely a gem and I enjoy watching you and Mr. Brown and it’s been such a wonderful experience to just sit back and enjoy one of your videos. Thank you for sharing!! Absolutely love visiting with you. God bless. 🥰❤️🙏🏻🇨🇦

These look delicious and such a simple recipe. I bet they taste like snickerdoodles with the added cinnamon on top. Snickerdoodle cookies are my favorite! Thank you for this recipe! I love it when you tell the history of these older recipes.🥰

I love the old ways, the old recipes, etc. Home grown, canning, and scratch cooking can't be beat. It's the best tasting food to be eaten. I thank you so much for this recipe, Ms. Lori. I'm going to bake up a batch next week for some out of town company coming in. I love your channel and pray for continued prosperity in the Lord. God bless and keep y'all.

Good evening! I haven't had a tea cake in years! My sister used to make them, and yours look identical to hers, crisp on the outside chewy on the inside! She's in Heaven now, and of course, she never shared the recipe! 😞 I will definitely make this recipe! Thanks for sharing! ❤️
